Don't 'run in place', focus on poorer states, Perikatan tells PM
PETALING JAYA: The success of the 13th Malaysian Plan (13MP) relies on the Madani government's political sincerity and transparency, otherwise it risks becoming an exercise of "running in place", says Perikatan Nasional. The Opposition coalition expressed concerns that, unlike the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), the 13MP does not commit development expenditure to the six less-developed states: Sabah, Sarawak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Perlis. Perikatan's economic portfolio head, Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman, highlighted this in a statement following the presentation of the 13MP in Parliament on Tuesday (Aug 1). The Bachok MP noted the absence of a narrative in "increasing rakyat ownership" in the 13MP, suggesting it appears to cater more to capital owners rather than the broader population. "Without bold implementation, 13MP risks failing to move the country forward — leaving it merely 'running in place'," he said. Syahir said that from a regional development perspective, 13MP shows a general commitment to balanced development between states, but it did not specify any fiscal distribution formula or quantitative targets for states such as Sabah, Sarawak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Perlis. "It is more concerning that 13MP seems to have no mention of fiscal reform in federal and state relations, revenue sharing (including tax and mineral revenues such as petroleum), or efforts to strengthen a more mature and fair federalism. Yet, these are key reasons behind the growing regional development gap. "Fair development cannot take place if states continue to be sidelined from the planning and implementation process," said Syahir. He pointed out that while the 13MP acknowledges issues such as income inequality, low wages, and dependency on foreign direct investment (FDI), the plan lacks bold reform. "The 13MP does not emphasise the issue of economic ownership by the people, especially for the Bumiputera community, rural populations, and informal workers," he said He also asked what were 13MP's long-term strategies to boost productivity, provide support networks for the elderly, and formulate progressive and sustainable labour policies. 'As a responsible opposition bloc, Perikatan MPs will scrutinise each priority and pillar presented, propose improvements to implementation strategies, demand transparency in fiscal distribution, and champion the rights and voices of states that have long been sidelined in the national development process. On July 31, Anwar tabled the five-year 13MP, covering the period from 2026 to 2030, providing a strategic framework for Malaysia's economic, social, and environmental priorities. A total of RM611bil is required to ensure the success of 13MP, covering the whole nation, including Sabah and Sarawak.

Ramly Burger Products To See Price Hike 7 July But Nothing To Do With Expanded SST
Subscribe to our FREE Malaysian's are groaning over an upcoming price hike of their favourite burger patty by Ramly, which will come into effect this 7 July. Thanks to various social media posts, they speculate that the price adjustment on the 'national burger' is due to the government's expanded SST measures. However, the notice about the new prices on their burger patties, that is going viral, was issued by Ramly Food Marketing Sdn Bhd to vendors on 14 April, three months before the new SST came into effect. A Facebook post last week sparked conversations about the price increase for Ramly burger products. Twitter user explains that the price hike is due rising costs of raw ingredients, not SST A Twitter user named Syahir shared a post illustrating how Ramly Food Marketing Sdn Bhd has consistently issued notices on price increases for their products over the past few years, citing rising costs. In his post, he included an image of a notice by Ramly about updating its prices starting from 7 July. 'The price increase notice on Ramly products to wholesalers, retailers, and markets was issued by Ramly on 14 April 2025, almost three months before the expanded SST was to come into effect. 'Ramly also explained that the rising costs of raw ingredients that cannot be avoided. Maybe the cost of importing beef from India has gone up? Who knows. 'Furthermore, Ramly has increased their product prices many times – 2013, 2016, 2022. Just Google it and you'll find notices by Ramly and burger vendors announcing the price increase,' he wrote in the caption. In short, the price increase is on the manufacturer's level, which will most likely prompt sellers to up their prices on their burgers too. Syahir also noted that Ramly is not restricted from raising prices because processed foods such as hamburger patties and sausages are not government-regulated goods. Mungkin kos import daging… — Syahir (@syahirsyhr) Raw ingredients like beef and chicken is exempted from the 5% SST In an earlier article, we highlighted that essential daily goods will not be taxed under the expanded SST scheme. This includes beef and chicken. That means the price increase in Ramly's products is purely from their side to keep up with rising costs of raw ingredients. Realistically, the Ramly burgers you get at a street stall is still considered quite affordable, with the simple burger daging still priced below RM10. The more decadent burger daging doube special cheese is going to cost you more than RM10 but at least it's still under RM20 (disclaimer: some stalls may charge more for specialty burgers). Asian Cup: Syahir warns teammates to fix flaws before Thailand rematch
KUALA LUMPUR: National skipper Syahir Rosdi has urged his teammates to switch focus to the team event after their historic sepak takraw gold medal in the regu event at the Asian Cup. Syahir, alongside Azlan Alias and Farhan Adam, stunned defending champions Thailand — represented by Sittipong Khamchan, Varayut Jantarasena and Yotsawat Uthaijaronsri — with a 15-12, 15-9 win in Thursday's final at the Titiwangsa Stadium. It was Malaysia's second title of the tournament after winning the quadrant event, having also finished runners-up in the doubles after losing to Thailand last week. Riding high from that victory, Malaysia opened their team event Group B campaign with a commanding 3-0 win over Brunei on Friday. They will next face South Korea and Japan, with a place in Sunday's final in sight — likely a rematch against Thailand, who will likely top Group A. Despite the landmark regu win, Syahir was quick to highlight areas needing improvement. "Thursday's win was unexpected and fuelled by the incredible support from the fans. Honestly, I didn't think we'd win 2-0. But seeing Azlan and Farhan fired up inspired me too," said Syahir. "Still, our performance wasn't perfect, especially our service and first-ball returns. Some of my serves didn't connect cleanly, so we'll need to fix that before the team matches." In the team opener, Noraizat Nordin, Haziq Hairul Nizam and Farhan swept past Brunei's first regu 15-5, 15-10. The momentum continued with Aidil Aiman Azwawi, Zulkifli Abd Razak and Khairul Aman Rosdi, who won 15-7, 15-8. The third regu of Afifuddin Razali, Zarif Merican and Amirul Zazwan wrapped up the rout with a dominant 15-5, 15-3 victory. National coach Ahmad Jais Baharun was satisfied with the start but wants more. "It was a good result for the first tie, but our performance isn't at its peak yet — likely due to player combinations and limited preparation time," he said.
