Malaysia's 34-year wait for sepak takraw team regu title goes on

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's 34-year wait for a sepak takraw team regu title continues after they fell 2-0 to arch-rivals Thailand in the Asian Cup final on Sunday. The first regu, featuring striker Azlan Alias, tekong Syahir Rosdi and feeder Amirul Zazwan Amir, put up a brave fight but were edged by Thailand's Sutthikiarat Panseankaew, Jakkrit Thinbangbon and Wuttinun Kamsanor in a thrilling opener, losing 15-11, 12-15, 17-15. With 2,000 home supporters watching at Titiwangsa Stadium, all eyes turned to Malaysia's second regu. Thailand sent out their strongest line-up — Tanaphon Sapyen, Sittipong Kamchan and Sirisak Anuloon — to face Noraizat Nordin, Haziq Hairul Nizam and Farhan Adam. The Malaysians started well, winning the first game 15-13, but the Thais fought back, taking the next two games 15-13 and 15-4 to clinch the victory and the Asian Cup crown. Malaysia last beat Thailand in a team regu event at the 1991 Ssea Games in Manila, where they won gold with a 2-1 win over the War Elephants. Despite the defeat, Malaysia can be proud of their overall showing at the Asian Cup, finishing with two gold medals (quadrant and regu) and two silvers (doubles and team regu). The national team's next test will be the prestigious Thai King's Cup in July.

Malaysia beat Thailand to clinch Asian Cup sepak takraw regu title

The Malaysian team celebrating after defeating Thailand 15-12, 15-9 to emerge Asian Cup sepak takraw regu champions at the Titiwangsa Stadium in Kuala Lumpur tonight. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia continued to prove its dominance over sepak takraw giants Thailand by emerging as the regu champions in the Asian Sepak Takraw Championship 2025 at Titiwangsa Stadium here tonight. The Malaysian trio of Farhan Adam (feeder), Syahir Rosdi (tekong) and Azlan Alias (killer) dominated much of the game for about an hour, before defeating the Thais 15-12 and 15-9 in the inaugural edition of the tournament. The victory also repeats Malaysia's success at the 2024 World Cup in the same event last year, when the national squad won the final against Thailand. In the first game, Malaysia started the match excellently with most of the serves perfectly executed by Syahir, to defeat the Thai trio. Thailand led by Yodsawat Uthaijaronsri (feeder), Sittipong Khamchan (tekong) and Varayut Jantarasena (killer) were in desperate need of a win in the second game. They employed various tactics in the hope of dragging the match to a deciding game, but their attacks were neutralised by the Malaysian trio. Met after the match, Syahir described the victory as surprising, and admitted that he was not at his best during the early rounds of the event. 'There are still many weaknesses to fix in terms of our serve. We hope that with the time we have, we can improve to face Thailand in the team event,' he said. It was the second victory for the national squad in the tournament, having also made history by winning the quadrant event on Monday. The team event competition will start tomorrow.

Malaysia dominate Thailand to conquer Asia in sepak takraw

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia cemented their dominance in sepak takraw by toppling traditional powerhouse Thailand to clinch the regu gold medal at the Asian Cup on Thursday, and with it, proudly hold both the continental and world titles. Roared on by a packed home crowd at Titiwangsa Stadium, the trio of Syahir Rosdi (tekong), Azlan Alias (striker) and Farhan Adam (feeder) delivered a commanding performance to beat Thailand's Sittipong Khamchan, Varayut Jantarasena and Yotsawat Uthaijaronsri 15-12, 15-9 in the final. The triumph follows Malaysia's historic victory over the Thai side at the World Cup final last year, also held at the same venue. Thursday's win not only confirmed Malaysia's supremacy in the sport but also ended Thailand's longstanding reign in the region — a feat that had eluded the national team for years. In the semi-finals, the Malaysians were equally dominant, dispatching Vietnam 15-8, 15-10, while Thailand booked their spot in the final by beating India 15-9, 15-5.
