Malaysia beat Thailand to clinch Asian Cup sepak takraw regu title

KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia continued to prove its dominance over sepak takraw giants Thailand by emerging as the regu champions in the Asian Sepak Takraw Championship 2025 at Titiwangsa Stadium here tonight.
The Malaysian trio of Farhan Adam (feeder), Syahir Rosdi (tekong) and Azlan Alias (killer) dominated much of the game for about an hour, before defeating the Thais 15-12 and 15-9 in the inaugural edition of the tournament.
The victory also repeats Malaysia's success at the 2024 World Cup in the same event last year, when the national squad won the final against Thailand.
In the first game, Malaysia started the match excellently with most of the serves perfectly executed by Syahir, to defeat the Thai trio.
Thailand led by Yodsawat Uthaijaronsri (feeder), Sittipong Khamchan (tekong) and Varayut Jantarasena (killer) were in desperate need of a win in the second game.
They employed various tactics in the hope of dragging the match to a deciding game, but their attacks were neutralised by the Malaysian trio.
Met after the match, Syahir described the victory as surprising, and admitted that he was not at his best during the early rounds of the event.
'There are still many weaknesses to fix in terms of our serve. We hope that with the time we have, we can improve to face Thailand in the team event,' he said.
It was the second victory for the national squad in the tournament, having also made history by winning the quadrant event on Monday.
The team event competition will start tomorrow.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : National women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah stormed into the final of the Indonesia Open in Jakarta this evening after defeating their Chinese opponents, making it their third final appearance this season. The world No 4 pair, who won the Thai Open title last month, had to labour for 63 minutes before beating Li Yi Jing-Luo Xu Min 12-21, 21-17, 21-11 in a match that saw them take an 8-0 lead in the decider before emerging as winners. An epic showdown awaits Pearly-Thinaah in the final as their opponents will either be world No 1 pair Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning from China or South Korea's world No 3 duo Baek Ha Na-Lee So Hee. These pairs have always been difficult opponents for the Malaysians. Today's win marks the third time that Pearly-Thinaah will be playing in a final this season. Their first final appearance was also at the Istora Stadium in Jakarta during the Indonesia Masters in January, where they lost to South Korea's Kim Hye Jeong-Kong Hee-Yong. Last month, they won the Super 500 Thailand Open, and now, they are in the hunt for their first title in the Super 1000 series, which offers a total prize money of US$1.45 million (RM6.13 million).
