#SHOWBIZ: New venue, date for In-Team's concert in September

KUALA LUMPUR: Following an overwhelming response from fans, nasyid group In-Team has announced a change of location and date for its Kasih Kekasih 25 Tahun concert. In a news report yesterday, its vocalist and frontman, Syahril Khalid, was quoted as saying that the changes were made to accommodate more concertgoers at a bigger venue. Originally scheduled for Sept 27, the concert has been moved to Sept 28 and will now take place at IdeaLive in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The new venue has the capacity to accommodate 5,000 spectators. Syahril added that those who have already purchased tickets are assured special front-row seats in their respective zones. Ticket holders will also be contacted by the organisers for seat confirmation and notification of the date change. Additionally, early bird buyers will receive special gifts from the Khair App. At the concert, In-Team will perform 25 songs and medleys, including a special appearance by the son of its late member, Suhaimi Saad, along with other guest artistes whose identities are being kept under wraps.

High costs, lack of charging stations hamper EV sales growth

KUALA LUMPUR: Electric vehicles (EVs) are growing in popularity, but analysts say two key factors continue to hinder their sales growth in Malaysia. According to RHB Investment Bank analyst, Syahril Hanafiah, the first challenge is the high cost of EVs, attributed to the RM100,000 minimum floor price for fully-imported (CBU) models. The second is the limited availability of charging infrastructure. "Without more affordable EV options, the local EV market share will remain modest and unlikely to significantly impact the total industry volume (TIV)," he said in a research report today. A report by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) shows that EVs accounted for 2.9 per cent of TIV in the first quarter of 2025, up from just 1.8 per cent in 2024. Meanwhile, data from the Road Transport Department (RTD) reveals that EV registrations (including non-MAA members) surged by 46 per cent year-on-year to 6,827 units in the first quarter of this year. This represents 3.4 per cent of all registered vehicles during the period, up from 2.5 per cent last year. While BYD continues to lead EV adoption, the best-selling model to date this year is the Proton 7, with 1,738 units delivered to customers. In related developments, Syahril said that March TIV stood at 72,700 units — 2 per cent higher than the same month last year and up 11 per cent from February, likely due to fewer working days in the previous month. This brought the year-to-date TIV to 188,100 units, a 7 per cent decline compared to the same period last year. He attributed the monthly growth in March to stronger vehicle deliveries ahead of the Aidilfitri festive season, with major contributions from Proton (21.7 per cent), Honda (31.5 per cent) and Toyota (19.6 per cent), partially offset by a 2.9 per cent dip from Perodua. "Despite the slight recovery in March, weak vehicle sales in January and February made the first quarter of 2025 underwhelming as expected, with a 7.4 per cent year-on-year drop following the record-breaking TIV in 2024," he added. Syahril also said that total production volume (TPV) declined by 5.7 per cent month-on-month and 13 per cent year-on-year in March, coinciding with the Ramadan period when manufacturing output typically slows. The production dip was led by Perodua (-11 per cent), Toyota (-5.5 per cent) and Honda (-1.1 per cent), although Proton recorded a 4.9 per cent increase. He anticipates production to decline further in the second quarter of 2025 due to temporary factory closures for scheduled maintenance during the Aidilfitri (April) and Aidiladha (June) periods, coupled with waning outstanding orders from key automakers. RHB Investment Bank maintains a 'neutral' outlook on the automotive sector, citing a lack of new catalysts to drive sales and earnings growth. Sime Darby remains the firm's top pick, given its strategic positioning to weather the effects of the upcoming RON95 petrol subsidy rationalisation and its association with Malaysia's prominent automotive brand, Perodua.

MBSA expands campaign to reduce plastic waste

(From second left) Mohd Azhar and Syahril launching the reusable bag display cabinet at Kompleks PKNS in Shah Alam. — KK SHAM/The Star Kompleks PKNS latest building to join project to eliminate single-use plastics in Shah Alam IN line with its zero-waste targets, Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has pledged to provide support to organisations or building or premises owners in the city keen to join its 'Program Komuniti Bebas Plastik Sekali Guna'. The project was initiated by the city council to make Shah Alam free of single-use plastics. MBSA management deputy secretary Mohd Azhar Mohd Sharif said the project, which started in 2022 with Bangunan Vista Alam in Section 14, has gained strong support from the community. 'After Bangunan Vista Alam, Wisma MBSA joined the project. The Selangor State Development Corporation's (PKNS) Kompleks PKNS was also selected to join last year,' he said during an event at Kompleks PKNS yesterday that was aimed at educating traders and building management about the project. During the event, they were briefed on the Shah Alam Single-Use Plastic Usage Control Action Plan, an action plan developed by MBSA. Mohd Azhar said the project was certified by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), one of MBSA's strategic partners. 'MBSA has become the sustainability role model for other local authorities in Malaysia. 'Shah Alam was also selected as the pioneer city to implement the Single-Use Plastic Reduction Programme under the Collaboration Actions for Single-Use Plastic Prevention in South-East Asia. 'It is a collaborative programme with MGTC and GIZ, a German service provider in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development and international education,' he said. Mohd Azhar said MBSA and PKNS would jointly form a Single-Use Plastic-Free Community Task Force for various purposes including information sharing. 'MBSA also hopes the whole of Selangor will stop the usage and reliance on single-use plastics by 2030 to reduce plastic waste.' However, Mohd Azhar said single-use plastics would not be banned in the city. 'The project only acts as a medium to encourage the reduction of single-use plastics. 'I urge all traders to encourage their customers to refrain from using single-use plastics. 'This action could change their customers' behaviours,' he said. Also present was Kompleks PKNS and SACC Mall building manager Syahril Mohd Rashid who hoped the effort would become the benchmark and inspire PKNS and its subsidiaries to reduce single-use plastics and work towards a sustainable future. During the event, Syahril and Mohd Azhar launched a reusable bag display cabinet in the complex. It is an initiative by MBSA to encourage the public to contribute unused reusable bags to be used by visitors to the complex.
