Engaged couple among those caught for alleged khalwat in Johor
BATU PAHAT: A couple planning to tie the knot at the end of the year was among three pairs detained by Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) enforcement officers for alleged khalwat in separate operations here.
The couple, both in their 30s, was caught in a Yong Peng hotel room during a midnight raid last night.
"Upon questioning, they admitted they were engaged and due to marry soon. However, they were found together in a room without a lawful bond," JAINJ said in a statement today.
In the same hotel, officers also detained a man and woman, both in their 20s, who admitted they were in a relationship and had plans to get engaged soon.
Both couples were detained for investigations under Section 27 of the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1997, which carries a fine of up to RM3,000 or two years' imprisonment.
In another case, a female student, in her 20s, was caught with her boyfriend at her rented home in Batu Pahat yesterday afternoon.
The enforcement team moved in about 3.30pm following a tip-off about a man frequenting the house, which is shared by four female students.
"During the raid, the woman was home alone as her housemates were away. She is believed to have invited her boyfriend over.
During the raid, the woman was clad in shorts and a T-shirt, while the man was wearing a matching T-shirt and a sarong. They told the enforcement team that they were discussing studies.
All three cases are under investigation, with charges expected to follow.
