Texas A&M softball stunned by Liberty in Regional
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (FOX 44) — No. 1 Texas A&M became the first number one overall seed in NCAA history to not advance to past the Regional round, falling to the Flames, 6-5 in the NCAA Regional Championship on Sunday night. Sydney Lessentine continued her heroics in the circle after saving the season for the Aggies in game one, turning in a stellar outing in the winner-take-all game. Lessentine finished her day with 4.2 IP, 4 H, ER, 6 K's. A&M jumped out to an early 3-0 lead through three innings, with KK Dement leading it off with a two-run shot in the bottom of the second. Liberty didn't find the scoring column until the bottom of the fifth but made their run in the sixth, scoring five runs to take a commanding 6-3 lead. The Aggies battled back in the bottom half, as an Allie Enright solo home run and a RBI-single from Koko Wooley pulled A&M within one run heading into the seventh. The Aggies got two runners on base down to their final out with Kramer Eschete at the plate. After falling behind in the count, Eschete worked a full count before swinging through strike three. No. 1 Texas A&M falls to Liberty in NCAA Tournament upset
No. 1 Texas A&M falls to Liberty in NCAA Tournament upset No. 1-ranked Texas A&M (48-10) falls to Liberty (50-13) on Sunday night, knocking them out of the NCAA Tournament and going down as the first No. 1-seed not to make it to the Super Regional. Texas A&M suffered a heartbreaking loss to Liberty on Sunday night, becoming the first No. 1 seed to miss out on the Super Regional. The Aggies controlled the game through five innings behind freshman pitcher Sydney Lessentine. A&M took an early lead with a two-run home run by KK Dement in the second inning, followed by an RBI single from Amari Harper in the third, giving them a 3-0 advantage. After a scoreless fourth, Liberty responded with a solo home run, prompting head coach Trisha Ford to replace Lessentine with Emiley Kennedy. The decision proved costly, as Liberty had tailored its game plan around facing Kennedy. In the next inning, Kennedy surrendered a two-run home run, tying the game with two outs. In an unexpected move, Ford then substituted Grace Sparks, who has struggled in the circle since March. Sparks gave up a single and a three-run homer, handing Liberty a late 6-3 lead before getting pulled for Emily Leavitt. The Aggies fought back, scoring two runs in the sixth inning but entered the final frame down 6-5. With two outs and runners on first and second, Liberty secured the win by striking out Kramer Eschete, earning their first Super Regional appearance in program history. Texas A&M softball picks up top ten series win after defeating No. 6 LSU 9-7
Texas A&M softball picks up top ten series win after defeating No. 6 LSU 9-7 No. 3 Texas A&M (36-5, 10-3 SEC) secures a Top 10 SEC series win, beating No. 6 LSU (35-7, 8-6 SEC) 9-7 in Game 2 at Davis Diamond. After being swept by LSU on the road last year, the Aggies are just one game away from returning the favor, showcasing their growth and determination this season. In Game 2, the Aggies capitalized on LSU's pitching struggles, with six walks issued in the first inning alone. This patience at the plate allowed Texas A&M to score seven runs on just two hits, setting the tone early. Despite a controversial pitching change by head coach Trisha Ford, which saw Sydney Lessentine replaced by Grace Sparks, the Aggies managed to hold off LSU's rally. Sparks faced challenges, giving up three runs in just three batters, but the Aggies' offense responded with clutch runs to maintain their lead. Aggie ace Emiley Kennedy stepped up in the final innings, delivering three scoreless frames to secure her 14th win. Kennedy's performance was instrumental in staving off LSU's momentum and closing the game with a 9-7 victory. With this win, Texas A&M strengthens its case for a top seed in the SEC tournament and positions itself as a strong contender to host a Super Regional. The Aggies' consistent performance and resilience make them one of the hottest teams in college softball right now. Texas A&M will face LSU in Game 3 on April 13 at 1:00 pm. CT. Texas A&M Softball Shines with Top 10 Ranking and Stellar Performance during Aggie Classic
Texas A&M softball (6-0) started the 2025 season off going undefeated in the Aggie Classic over the weekend, and they looked impressive doing it. Early season tournaments are a great opportunity to test different lineups and put players in challenging situations they may face later during conference play. Last year, a glaring issue for Texas A&M was the lack of pitching depth to support All-American Emiley Kennedy late in the season. After a rough start in the circle, the pitching improved significantly as the weekend progressed. A hidden gem might be true freshman Sydney Lessentine, who threw a complete game shutout against ACU. On offense, the Aggies are extremely balanced with incredible speed and potent bats. Transfer Mac Barbara is expected to be a significant threat to opposing teams because of how the ball jumps off her bat. If teams decide to walk her, Mya Perez, right behind her, can hit the ball just as well. There are no weak links, and the only real decision is who will take hold of the catcher spot when SEC play opens up. With the strong performances behind the plate, it might come down to who has the best bat. Overall, the early season tournaments have provided valuable insights into the team's strengths and areas for improvement. As Texas A&M builds momentum, fans can look forward to an exciting and competitive season. All major softball polls have the Aggies in the Top 10 following 6-0 start to the season with a top 25 win over Baylor. Texas A&M will travel to Wichita State for game 1 of the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational on Thursday, February 13, at 2:00 p.m. CST. The game can be viewed on ESPN+ and the ESPN App. Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions.
