COLLEGE STATION, Texas (FOX 44) — No. 1 Texas A&M became the first number one overall seed in NCAA history to not advance to past the Regional round, falling to the Flames, 6-5 in the NCAA Regional Championship on Sunday night. Sydney Lessentine continued her heroics in the circle after saving the season for the Aggies in game one, turning in a stellar outing in the winner-take-all game. Lessentine finished her day with 4.2 IP, 4 H, ER, 6 K's. A&M jumped out to an early 3-0 lead through three innings, with KK Dement leading it off with a two-run shot in the bottom of the second. Liberty didn't find the scoring column until the bottom of the fifth but made their run in the sixth, scoring five runs to take a commanding 6-3 lead. The Aggies battled back in the bottom half, as an Allie Enright solo home run and a RBI-single from Koko Wooley pulled A&M within one run heading into the seventh. The Aggies got two runners on base down to their final out with Kramer Eschete at the plate. After falling behind in the count, Eschete worked a full count before swinging through strike three. Texas A&M suffered a heartbreaking loss to Liberty on Sunday night, becoming the first No. 1 seed to miss out on the Super Regional. The Aggies controlled the game through five innings behind freshman pitcher Sydney Lessentine. A&M took an early lead with a two-run home run by KK Dement in the second inning, followed by an RBI single from Amari Harper in the third, giving them a 3-0 advantage. After a scoreless fourth, Liberty responded with a solo home run, prompting head coach Trisha Ford to replace Lessentine with Emiley Kennedy. The decision proved costly, as Liberty had tailored its game plan around facing Kennedy. In the next inning, Kennedy surrendered a two-run home run, tying the game with two outs. In an unexpected move, Ford then substituted Grace Sparks, who has struggled in the circle since March. Sparks gave up a single and a three-run homer, handing Liberty a late 6-3 lead before getting pulled for Emily Leavitt. Texas A&M softball (6-0) started the 2025 season off going undefeated in the Aggie Classic over the weekend, and they looked impressive doing it. Early season tournaments are a great opportunity to test different lineups and put players in challenging situations they may face later during conference play. Last year, a glaring issue for Texas A&M was the lack of pitching depth to support All-American Emiley Kennedy late in the season. After a rough start in the circle, the pitching improved significantly as the weekend progressed. A hidden gem might be true freshman Sydney Lessentine, who threw a complete game shutout against ACU. On offense, the Aggies are extremely balanced with incredible speed and potent bats.
