Six markets set up in Lahore for sale and purchase of animals

LAHORE: For the sale and purchase of sacrificial animals on Eid-ul-Azha, the Lahore district administration has made six designated cattle markets operational across the provincial capital, providing a well-organised and hygienic environment for buyers and sellers. One permanent cattle market has been set up at Shahpur Kanjran, while five temporary markets were established at Haveli Markaz near Spring Mill (Raiwind zone), Sports Complex near Adda Rakh Chabeel (Wahga zone), LDA City near Kana Kacha on Defence Road (Nishtar zone), Mouza Nain Sukh near Saggian Bridge (Ravi zone) and Burki Road near Paragon City (Cantonment zone). The initiative aims to ensure convenience and comfort for both traders and the general public through comprehensive on-ground arrangements, said the administration here on Saturday. To ensure quality service delivery, the Punjab Cattle Market Management Company is providing essential facilities, such as tents, fodder, toilets, mobile ATM units, complaint cells and information desks. Moreover, electricity, standby generators, and clean drinking water are also available at all market locations. The Punjab Police have been given the task to provide security in and around the markets, while the traffic police will manage vehicular flow. The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) has been tasked with cleaning operations and debris removal, particularly from the Saggian site. To review the ongoing operations and assess the facilities being provided at the cattle markets, Deputy Commissioner Syed Musa Raza visited Kacha Bakra Mandi. He was briefed by the Chief Officer of Metropolitan Corporation Lahore and the Assistant Commissioner of Nishtar Town on administrative measures in place to support the market's smooth functioning. During the visit, the DC personally inspected key facilities, including clean drinking water, sanitation services, animal shelters, and parking areas, and directed officials to further enhance service delivery. He instructed that any gaps be addressed promptly to ensure a seamless and efficient market experience for all visitors. The district administration has also directed the Punjab Cattle Market Management Company to ensure the uninterrupted provision of essential services at all designated sites. These include access to clean water, proper drainage, shaded rest areas, and organised parking to prevent congestion and inconvenience. The DC emphasised the administration's commitment to maintaining high standards of service in all markets. He assured that the buying and selling of sacrificial animals would take place in a safe, accessible, and well-managed environment, in line with the city's broader public facilitation goals. Meanwhile, the Punjab government imposed Section 144 across the province in connection with Eid-ul-Azha, and a notification has been issued in this regard. Under Section 144, restrictions will be in effect from June 5 to June 11. According to the notification, burning the heads and feet of sacrificial animals (siri paaye) in public places has been prohibited during Eid. Swimming, bathing and boating in rivers, lakes, canals and dams are also banned. Section 144 has been enforced against dumping animal waste and offal into manholes, drains or canals, and against the sale and purchase of sacrificial animals at locations other than officially approved cattle markets. The public display of weapons and ammunition is also prohibited under this order. The notification further stated that these restrictions have been implemented to protect human lives, maintain peace, and ensure environmental cleanliness. These activities pose threats to public safety, health and create unrest among the population. Additionally, banned organisations will not be allowed to collect sacrificial animal hides during Eid. Only organisations registered with the Punjab Charity Commission will be permitted to collect hides. Authorities and law enforcement agencies have been instructed to ensure strict implementation of these directives. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

City remains on high alert

As tensions between Pakistan and India escalated following cross-border incidents, the authorities urged citizens to rely only on official sources for information. "There has been no violent incident near the Wagah Border, nor have any evacuation orders been issued," said Lahore Deputy Commissioner Syed Musa Raza in a statement, advising citizens not to circulate rumours. The DC also shared the official control room number — 0307-0002345 — for residents to verify any emergency-related information. While the city remains on high alert following Indian drone attacks that injured several citizens, the authorities emphasised that there is no current threat requiring evacuations. All relevant departments, including police, Civil Defence and Rescue 1122, remain on standby to ensure public safety and a rapid response in case of further escalation. "We urge everyone to confirm the authenticity of any alerts through government sources before taking action," the deputy commissioner stated. Meanwhile, in a show of preparedness, Civil Defence and Rescue 1122 have launched province-wide emergency training exercises in coordination with law enforcement agencies. Around 3,000 Civil Defence volunteers and 1,500 Rescue 1122 personnel are participating in the drills, aimed at preparing both emergency responders and civilians for scenarios such as air raids or cross-border attacks. The exercises include public awareness campaigns in educational institutions and community organisations, focusing on wartime safety protocols. Citizens are being trained to recognise siren alerts, identify safe shelters or bunkers and avoid areas with potential explosive threats. In the event of an air strike or bombing, residents are advised to seek shelter immediately, stay away from windows, turn off gas and electricity, and lie flat on the ground with their heads covered if unable to move to a safe area. Maintaining blackout conditions at night and tuning in to official news updates are also recommended. People are also encouraged to prepare emergency kits with water, non-perishable food, medications, a flashlight, batteries, a radio and basic first-aid supplies. If a designated shelter is not accessible, securing an interior room or basement is advised. Authorities urge calm, especially for families with children, the elderly or people with disabilities, and stress the importance of avoiding rumours or unofficial reports. Residents are warned not to approach downed drones or suspicious objects. The Civil Defence bomb disposal squad remains on alert to respond to any explosive hazards. According to officials, India conducted coordinated drone strikes on multiple locations across the country between the nights of May 6 and 7. The attacks resulted in the deaths of 31 civilians. Another wave of drone activity was reported overnight from May 7 to 8. Following Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif's order, the Civil Defence exercises are being conducted in cities and towns across the province. The chief minister directed the district administrations to monitor the drills. Mock drills of Rescue 1122 are under way to cope with any untoward incident as well as preempt dangers. The Civil Defence exercises began in Rawalpindi, Murree, Jhelum, Chakwal, Sargodha, Narowal, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Sialkot, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Multan, Khanewal, Muzaffargarh, Layyah, Vehari and other cities.

102 properties sealed in anti-encroachment operation

LAHORE: In an operation against encroachments, the Lahore district administration has sealed 102 properties and seized goods. According to the administration, under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Syed Musa Raza, the administration continued with its anti-encroachment drive across multiple zones of the city, seizing 23 trucks of unauthorised materials and sealing illegally occupied premises in a bid to restore public spaces and pedestrian thoroughfares. Moreover, a total of 5,400 flex banners and other makeshift signboards were removed from footpaths and roadside, substantially improving traffic flow and sightlines on major thoroughfares and ensuring unimpeded access for emergency services such as fire brigades and ambulances. For this intensive campaign under the banner of the 'Clean Lahore' drive, enforcement teams led by Metropolitan Corporation Lahore Chief Officer Shahid Abbas Kathiya and Metropolitan Officer Regulation Headquarters Kashif Jaleel systematically cleared encroachments from key commercial and residential arteries, including Urdu Bazaar, Circular Road, Ferozepur Road, Shadman and Ichhra. Fake price magistrates caught

The district administration arrested two individuals fraudulently posing as price control magistrates in the Kharak Sabzazar Bazaar. The impostors were caught inspecting prices and allegedly extorting money while falsely claiming to be government officials. They have been handed over to Sabzazar police, and cases have been registered against them. Meanwhile, the district administration released a report detailing enforcement actions against price violations. Lahore Deputy Commissioner (DC) Syed Musa Raza stated that strict measures against price gouging are yielding positive results. Heavy fines are being imposed on violators, and legal action is being pursued. According to the report, enforcement teams took action at 26 locations, issuing 25 warnings and imposing fines exceeding Rs100,000. DC Raza reaffirmed the administration's commitment to cracking down on overpricing, emphasising that no one would be allowed to exploit citizens. He directed officials to remain vigilant, ensuring consistent price monitoring and the timely availability of essential goods at Ramazan Sahulat stalls. Assistant commissioners conducted surprise visits to monitor essential item prices, fining or arresting several violators. Three shops were sealed in Model Bazaar and Rehri Bazaar Raiwind for non-compliance. Vendors were fined for overpricing onions, tomatoes, fruits, and vegetables in various markets, with seven individuals arrested and cases registered. Meanwhile, Lahore Division Commissioner Zaid bin Maqsood chaired a meeting to review the distribution of pay orders under the Nigehban Ramazan initiative launched by the chief minister to support low-income families. He was informed that all districts have delivered more than half of the registered pay orders to the beneficiaries' doorsteps. It was highlighted that the district authorities are monitoring the franchises responsible for encashing the pay orders and strict action has been taken against those violating the guidelines. The commissioner emphasised that all shops and street vendors must display the official price lists and ensure strict adherence to government regulations. Reviewing the progress of pay order distribution across the division, he reaffirmed the Punjab government's commitment to transparency, ensuring that the financial aid reaches the deserving without any deductions. He stated that a total of 399,205 low-income families in Lahore division are receiving pay orders at their doorsteps. Each pay order is of Rs10,000, which must be paid in full to the titleholder without any unauthorised deduction. He noted that in Lahore, 199,287 families are benefiting from this initiative, while in Sheikhupura 81,796 families are receiving financial aid. In Nankana Sahib, 42,793 families are covered under the programme, whereas in Kasur the pay orders have been distributed among 75,329 families. He directed officials to ensure that the assistance is delivered with honesty and transparency. The commissioner also reviewed the supply of sugar at designated sale points and Ramazan Bazaars across all districts. The meeting was attended by the Lahore deputy commissioner, while Nankana DC Muhammad Tasleem Rao, Kasur DC Imran Ali and Sheikhupura DC Shahid Imran Marth participated via video link.
