White Sox Sign Syndergaard to Minor-League Deal
White Sox Sign Syndergaard to Minor-League Deal originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Thor's hammer looks to be coming back. The Chicago White Sox signed former All-Star right-hander Noah Syndergaard to a minor-league deal on Tuesday. Syndergaard, 32, is hoping to recapture some of the magic that led him to consideration as one of the game's best young pitchers in the late 2010s. Advertisement But Tommy John surgery knocked him from the path in 2020 and he struggled the last time he pitched in the majors in 2023 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cleveland Guardians. That season, Syndergaard carried a 6.50 ERA and 1.367 WHIP over 18 starts between the two teams. He hasn't pitched organized ball since. Nicknamed "Thor" because of his Scandanavian last name and, at the time, long, blond hair, Syndergaard rated as high as the No. 9 prospect in baseball in 2015. He finished fourth in National League Rookie of the Year voting that season and finished eighth in NL Cy Young Award voting in 2016 by pitching to a 2.60 ERA with 218 strikeouts in 183 2/3 innings. Even after that, Syndergaard finished the 2018 and 2019 seasons with a 3.7 bWAR and a 2.1 bWAR before requiring Tommy John surgery in March 2020. Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images Syndergaard still may not return to the big leagues. He is set to report to Chicago's spring training facility in Arizona to get back up to physical strength and stamina before resuming his career in the minor leagues. Advertisement Chicago's hope is that Syndergaard could provide a stabilizing force for a young team in a rebuild. Three of their five starting pitchers are 25 or younger and the White Sox staff carries a surprisingly good 4.23 ERA in 2025, good for 22nd in baseball, just one spot behind the Dodgers. The White Sox enter Tuesday with the worst record in the American League, 24 games behind the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central. Former Mets All-Star pitcher Noah Syndergaard attempting MLB comeback with White Sox
The Chicago White Sox have signed Noah Syndergaard to a minor league contract nearly two years after the former All-Star pitcher last pitched in an MLB game. The White Sox confirmed to media Tuesday that Syndergaard has reported to the team's spring training complex in Glendale, Arizona. It's not clear where within the White Sox system Syndergaard will go from there. Advertisement Syndergaard, 32, is an eight-season MLB veteran who made his name with the New York Mets thanks to an imposing fastball and effective curveball that he leveraged with his 6-foot-6 frame. He made his MLB debut with the Mets in 2015 at 22 years old and was a starter as the Mets advanced to the World Series against the Kansas City Royals. He made an All-Star team the following season while posting a career-best 2.60 ERA with 218 strikeouts and 43 walks in 183 2/3 innings. Noah Syndergaard lasted six starts with the Guardians in 2023 before they released him. (Photo by) (Mark Blinch via Getty Images) Syndergaard missed the 2020 season and most of 2021 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and struggled to regain his prior form following the procedure. Advertisement Syndergaard left New York in free agency ahead of the 2022 season to sign a one-year, $21 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels traded him that season to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Syndergaard ahead of the 2023 season, then traded him to the Cleveland Guardians before the trade deadline. The Guardians released him after six starts. Syndergaard posted a 6.50 ERA with the Dodgers and Guardians in his last MLB season. For his career, Syndergaard has a 3.71 ERA and 1.196 WHIP with 928 strikeouts in 941 1/3 innings pitched. The White Sox are rolling the dice that Syndergaard can regain some of his previous form.
