Ukrainian drones reportedly strike oil refinery in Russia's Samara Oblast
Ukrainian drones attacked an oil refinery in the city of Syzran in Russia's Samara Oblast overnight on March 4, Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, said. The first explosions occurred around 3 a.m. local time, according to local residents. A fire broke out at the facility as a result. Samara Oblast Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev later said that drones attacked "one of the Syzran industrial enterprises" without providing more details. Russian forces downed drones, and there were no casualties, Fedorishchev claimed. The Kyiv Independent could not immediately verify the claims. The Syzran Oil Refinery, lying around 700 kilometers (430 miles) from the Russia-Ukraine border, was opened in 1942 and belongs to the Russian state-owned oil company Rosneft. The refinery has a capacity of 8.9 million tons of oil per year. It produces fuel, aviation kerosene, and bitumen, as well as processes crude oil from Western Siberia and Samara Oblast, according to Kovalenko. Drones earlier attacked the Syzran Oil Refinery on Feb. 19. Ukraine considers Russian oil facilities to be valid military targets, as fossil fuel profits supply Moscow's war machine. The Ukrainian military has launched repeated attacks against Russian refineries with long-range drones. Russia's Syzran oil refinery suspended operations following a drone attack, sources say
MOSCOW, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Syzran oil refinery, operated by Russia's oil giant Rosneft ( opens new tab, suspended oil processing on Wednesday due to a fire at the primary unit (CDU-6) following an attack by a Ukrainian drone, two industry sources told Reuters. The governor of Russia's Samara region, where the Syzran refinery with 150,000 barrels-per-day (bpd) capacity is located, said the plant had been attacked by Ukraine overnight. "Refining has been temporarily suspended at CDU-6 due to a fire," one of the sources said. Rosneft did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. The Syzran Oil Refinery is part of the Rosneft group of Samara refineries, which also includes the Novokuibyshevsky and Kuibyshevsky plants. According to industry sources, the actual volume of oil refining at the Syzran Oil Refinery was well below capacity in 2024 and amounted to about 90,000 bpd or 4.3 million metric tons. Syzran refinery was attacked by Ukraine's drones several times in 2024, also affecting its processing.

Residents posted videos on social media purportedly showing a large blaze at the refinery. Sounds of explosions were reported at around 2:45 a.m. local time. The strike reportedly caused a fire at the refinery. There were no casualties, according to Fedorishchev. The Kyiv Independent could not immediately verify the claims. The Syzran Oil Refinery, lying around 700 kilometers (430 miles) from the Russia-Ukraine border, was opened in 1942 and belongs to the Russian state-owned oil company Rosneft. The facility "has a processing capacity of 8.9 million tons of oil per year," said Andrii Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation. "Its products include fuel, aviation kerosene, and bitumen," Kovalenko said while reporting on the attack. Ukraine considers Russian oil facilities to be valid military targets, as fossil fuel profits supply Moscow's war machine. The Ukrainian military has launched repeated attacks against Russian refineries with long-range drones. In less than two months of 2025, at least 17 Russian oil facilities were attacked by drones, according to the independent Russian Telegram news channel Astra. On Feb. 17, Ukrainian drones, operated by the Special Operations Forces and Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), hit the Ilsky Oil Refinery in Krasnodar Krai and the Kropotkinskaya oil pumping station in the Kavkazsky district of Kuban.
