[UPDATED] A horrible week for Sze Fei-Izzuddin

KUALA LUMPUR: The world came crashing down on men's doubles Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani in the past week. After slipping two rungs to world No. 3 in the weekly Badminton World Federation rankings yesterday, Sze Fei-Izzuddin Rumsani were dealt another blow today. They crashed out in the first round of the China Open after a 21-15, 15-21, 17-21 loss to South Korea's world No. 40 Kang Min Hyuk-Ki Dong Ju in 56 minutes at the Changzhou Olympic Sports Centre. Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin conceded that their opponents were simply better on the day. The Malaysian duo failed to build on the momentum from their runners-up finish at the Japan Open last week. Despite winning the opening game convincingly, Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin couldn't stop the Koreans from taking control of the match thereafter. "We tried our best, but our opponents were better than us today," said Sze Fei in a post-match BWF interview. "They controlled the game with the first three shots." Since winning the India Open in January, Sze Fei-Izzuddin have been unable to add to their trophy haul — a slump that saw them relinquish their world No. 1 ranking after just eight weeks at the top. There has been speculation recently that the independent pair are set to rejoin the BA of Malaysia. However, Sze Fei dismissed such claims yesterday. Sze Fei-Izzuddin will hope to bounce back at next month's World Championships.

Japan Open: Seung Jae-Won Ho foil Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin's bid to retain title

PROFESSIONAL men's doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani were denied back-to-back Japan Open titles after falling to South Korea's Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae in the 2025 edition final in Tokyo today. Playing at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, the world number one Malaysians were outgunned in the opening game, losing 16-21, as they struggled to cope with the Koreans' aggressive pace and sharp attacks. Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin then responded strongly in the early stage of the second game, taking a 4-1 lead. However, their rhythm faltered after the interval, allowing the world number three to claw back and level at 14-14 before slipping behind for the first time at 14-15. From there, Won Ho-Seung Jae never looked back, sealing victory at 21-17 to claim their fifth title of the year in just 38 minutes. Won Ho-Seung Jae took home USD70,300 (about RM298,000) as champions while Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin earned USD33,250 (around RM141,000) as the runners-up. Earlier, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah stumbled in their bid to become the first Malaysian women's doubles pair to land the Japan Open title, going down to world number one Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning of China, 21-15, 21-14 - BERNAMA

Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin ranked world No. 1 as Aaron-Wooi Yik stay at No. 3

KUALA LUMPUR — National men's doubles professional pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani are now ranked as world number one based on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) ranking released today. Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin, having amassed 91,090 points, climbed up one position to take over the top spot from Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen (90,411 points) after the Danes failed to defend their title at the recently concluded Malaysia Masters. Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin are the first Malaysian men's doubles pair to be ranked number one in the world since Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong were perched atop the rankings in 2016, thus joining an elite list of former national greats to have achieved the feat, including Razif-Jalani, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Cheah Soon Kit-Yap Kim Hock. Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin clinched the India Open crown in January but their form took a dip and they failed to reach the semi-finals of any of the tournaments they competed in after that. Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin will be in action in the May 27-June 1 Singapore Open and will begin their campaign against Taiwan's Lee Fang Chih-Lee Fang Jen tomorrow (May 28). Meanwhile, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik remained in third spot in the world ranking while newly-crowned Malaysia Masters champions Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun moved up one rung to be placed seventh. — BERNAMA
