Awareness drive launched for Damai Rainforest's global recognition

Published on: Thursday, May 22, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 22, 2025 By: Crystal Hermenegildus Text Size: The awareness programme participants. TAWAU: Public awareness efforts are being stepped up to highlight the ecological value of the Damai Rainforest Landscape and its nomination potential as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Kalabakan MP Datuk Andy Muhammad Suryady Bandy said this during a community engagement event aimed at fostering local understanding of the region's biodiversity. He stressed that community support is vital to preserving the Damai Landscape, which comprises Danum Valley, Maliau Basin, and Imbak Canyon. The Damai area protects between 15 and 20 per cent of Borneo's forest biodiversity and is home to more than 15,000 plant species. The launch event was held at Maliau Basin, with hopes that global recognition will follow. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Drone-based medicine delivery to improve rural healthcare access

Published on: Sunday, May 11, 2025 Published on: Sun, May 11, 2025 Text Size: One of the types of drones to be used in the initiative. TAWAU: A drone-based medicine delivery system would be introduced as part of a pilot project by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and local drone technology partners. The initiative, featured at the National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) booth during the Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim here, aims to enhance access to medication in remote and hard-to-reach areas. The first phase of the project is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2025 at two selected Nadi centres, with plans to expand to 150 centres in 2026 and all 392 Nadi locations by 2027. This high-impact strategy supports the government's broader vision of equitable rural healthcare access through 5G and AI-powered smart services. Nadi's booth also showcased services under five key areas - entrepreneurship, health, lifelong learning, IT awareness, and government services. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘Get it done or get out!' order

Published on: Monday, May 05, 2025 Published on: Mon, May 05, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Khaled at the construction site of the RKAT. TAWAU: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin warned contractors involved in projects at army camps to 'Get it done or get out!' He said the Ministry would not hesitate to terminate those unable to complete their projects. 'If they fail, we'll terminate the project (contractor services). Just yesterday (Saturday at the Joint Task Force Headquarters 2 – MKATB 2, Kukusan Camp), we terminated a contractor,' he said. Khaled was referring to delays in the construction of a 144-unit Armed Forces Family Housing (RKAT) project at Kukusan Camp, which received RM77 million in funding and was originally scheduled for completion in July 2024 after starting in September 2021. Khaled was on a working visit to the 7th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD) at Kubota Camp, Sunday. Present was Army Chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan. Khaled said such issues present challenges, particularly in terms of project delays and increased costs, but insisted the project must proceed for the benefit of military personnel. 'When we open for a new tender, we face further delays and rising costs, and we're forced to use funds that were meant for other priorities. 'That's why we're not pleased when a project fails or stalls, because it brings about numerous problems – especially longer completion times and higher construction costs,' he said. On another project, he said the RM99 million RKAT-Multi-Purpose Extension project at Kubota Camp is scheduled for completion in September 2026. Khaled said the Ministry would closely monitor the project, as it is considered highly important, and hoped that it would be completed on schedule with support from the Public Works Department (JKR) and contractor assurances. 'This working visit is important to assess all developments approved by the government, particularly those related to the welfare of our armed forces, and ensure they are completed as planned. This (RKAT) project is vital to ensure our military personnel have decent and appropriate housing to grow and raise their families successfully. 'If it's not completed, our personnel will be forced to rent housing outside the camp, which exposes us to all sorts of challenges and issues.' On the maintenance of army camp housing, Khaled said it is allocated RM400 million annually since 2023 and significantly higher compared to previous administrations, which provided no more than RM100m. 'This year, Kubota Camp has been allocated RM1 million for maintenance work on existing houses to ensure the comfort of military families,' he said. Regarding the welfare and economic development of military personnel, Khaled said the Ministry is preparing to implement the Madani Outreach Camp Program (PKSM), sponsored by the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT), with a budget of RM500,000 across five selected military camps nationwide. As part of this programme, the hall at Kubota Camp would be upgraded. He said the camp has also been selected for a stingless bee (kelulut) honey farming project involving military spouses alongside their husbands. Khaled also revealed intention to replace the Pangkalan Laut Tun Sharifah Rodziah, which will be 10 years old next year. Among the ministry's proposals he said is to acquire a new, more mobile Forward Operating Base capable of accommodating helicopters with loads exceeding six tons. Additionally, he said the Ministry of Defence has reportedly just received four new Coastal Surveillance System (CSS) radar units to be installed along the East Coast of Sabah. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Rina leaves polls candidacy to GRS leadership

Published on: Saturday, April 26, 2025 Published on: Sat, Apr 26, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Rina hoped more people would recognise the vision of Kukusan and the GRS-led government as a positive political direction for the people of Sabah. TAWAU: Kukusan Assemblywoman Datuk Rina Jainal reaffirmed she remains a registered member of Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (PHRS), dismissing speculation of a rift between her and PHRS President Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah. The Political Secretary to the Finance Minister is also understood to still hold the position of Deputy President of PHRS and is a member of the Supreme Council of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS). When asked whether she would contest the 17th State Election under the PHRS banner to defend her Kukusan seat, Rina responded that she preferred to focus on completing her current term. 'Ultimately, we leave it to the party leadership. For me, the best kind of politics is simply doing the work. The leadership is experienced enough to make the best decision,' she said. Rina added that there is still much to be done in Kukusan and that she is enthusiastic about being involved in development plans for both the constituency and Sabah in general. She dismissed claims that she left Parti Warisan to join PHRS for personal financial gain. 'Personal gain? That's never been our focus — that's not how we operate. We just focus on doing the work in our area. 'But that's the nature of politics. No matter what we say, there will always be opposing views trying to paint us as traitors and so on.' She said her responsibilities go beyond representing youth and women, with her efforts often centred on resolving infrastructure issues in Kukusan as well as broader challenges across the constituency. Rina hoped more people would recognise the vision of Kukusan and the GRS-led government as a positive political direction for the people of Sabah. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? TAWAU: A Tawaurian – Donny Ngu or 'Uncle Sunday' – did Malaysia proud by winning prizes in the International Clown Show 2025 organised by the World Clown Association at Dallas, Texas, United States, recently. He won second place in the Make-Up (Character) category and third place in the Single Skits competition after Eduardo Barquera (first place) and Alan Barquera (second place). Donny was also appointed New South East Asia Regional Director of World Clown Association 2025-2027. In 2024, Donny participated in the Nusantara Clown Convention held in Bali, where he engaged in cross-cultural exchange with professional clowns from Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia and India. His outstanding performance earned him the Best Clown Performance Award, further establishing his reputation as one of Southeast Asia's most promising clown artists. 'I wish to share the love, joy and hope with everyone via clowning edutainment. 'I also encourage young people to boldly develop their potential and talents to bless the community. 'I believe that each person is uniquely gifted by God, and when those gifts are nurtured and used for good, they can make a lasting impact. 'It is my hope to see a new generation empowered — full of creativity, compassion, and courage — bringing joy, inspiration, and positive change to the world around them,' he said. Recently, Donny was invited to perform in front of about 800 stateless kids and teachers at the Pusat Bimbingan Alternatif Grace at Mile 5, Apas Road, in a Hari Raya celebration. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
