Awareness drive launched for Damai Rainforest's global recognition

TAWAU: Public awareness efforts are being stepped up to highlight the ecological value of the Damai Rainforest Landscape and its nomination potential as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Kalabakan MP Datuk Andy Muhammad Suryady Bandy said this during a community engagement event aimed at fostering local understanding of the region's biodiversity. He stressed that community support is vital to preserving the Damai Landscape, which comprises Danum Valley, Maliau Basin, and Imbak Canyon. The Damai area protects between 15 and 20 per cent of Borneo's forest biodiversity and is home to more than 15,000 plant species. ‘No pork, no lard' not proof of halal status: Jais

KUALA LUMPUR: The phrase 'No pork, no lard' displayed at some eateries does not necessarily mean the food is halal, and cannot be used arbitrarily, according to Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais), Sinar Harian reported.. Jais said terms such as 'Muslim friendly' or 'No pork, no lard' are strictly prohibited for any party without a Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM). Jais said such phrases may give the impression that food or services comply with halal standards, when in reality, without valid halal certification, there is no guarantee they meet requirements relating to ingredients, preparation, and cleanliness. The explanation was made in a recent Jais social media video titled 'Penggunaan 'Muslim Friendly' salah?', which highlighted the importance of clear and accurate labelling for consumers. Under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, it is illegal to use any term or label that may mislead the public, Jais added. Only SPHM holders are allowed to use these terms, as 'No pork, no lard' merely indicates the absence of pork but does not address other non-halal elements such as alcohol, cross-contamination, or non-halal gelatin. Speaking at the memorial held at the Sandakan Memorial Park today, Hajiji assured that this legacy would be preserved and passed on to future generations. Sandakan MP Vivian Wong noted that this year marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, yet for many families from Australia, the United Kingdom, and beyond, the memories of loved ones lost in Sandakan remained vivid. He said the gathering was more than remembrance, describing Sandakan as a place where the human spirit shone amid adversity and where bonds were forged between Allied soldiers and local Sabahans. Hajiji reflected on the Sandakan Death Marches and prisoner-of-war camps, saying their history was remembered not only for the suffering but also for moments of shared humanity and hope. He paid tribute to the quiet heroes among local Sabahans who risked or gave their lives to shelter and assist Allied soldiers, saying their bravery endures in stories passed down through generations. Tugboat worker dies after falling overboard in Kudat

The victim, identified as Mohd Azman Idris, 31, is believed to have fallen while reconnecting a broken anchor rope in rough seas. Kudat Fire and Rescue Station chief Darickson Galanang said 12 personnel, led by Rasidi Sadai, rushed 39km to the scene with a fire engine, EMRS unit and utility vehicle following a distress call at 4.46pm. According to Darickson, two co-workers — Muhammad Haseef Abdul Rahman, 29, and Aidil Adman Said, 49 — jumped in to rescue Azman but were unable to return to the vessel due to strong waves before all three were later pulled to shore by rescuers.
