Homegrown companies to offer affordable 4G, 5G solutions for emerging markets: TEPC's Arnob Roy
NEW DELHI: India's homegrown telecom companies have the potential to sell affordable 4G and fifth-generation ( 5G ) network solutions, particularly in emerging markets, that are embarking on their network expansion and modernisation journey, said a senior executive of Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council ( TEPC ). 'There is a great opportunity for us. There is still a lot of 4G expansion happening across the world, and a lot of 5G upgrades are also happening. In both places, our technology is very relevant. This is where the opportunities are because India has an environment similar to many of the emerging markets,' Arnob Roy , chairman, TEPC, told ETTelecom. Roy said that Indian companies have a complete, end-to-end telecom stack covering wireless and wireline networks, which they can sell in the emerging markets. 'Similarly, all these mobile networks also need a complete backhaul network over fiber. There is also a need for broadband networks and many other things in countries where internet penetration is not as deep as India,' he added. 'That is where, I think, the technology from India is very relevant because of the nature of provenness that we have in similar operating conditions,' said Roy, who is also the chief operating officer (COO) & whole-time director of Tejas Networks . Several low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Asia Pacific region are either expanding 4G or investing in the latest-generation 5G networks. London-headquartered GSMA, in a report earlier this year, said that LMICs are expected to realise an increasing proportion of economic benefits as mobile technology, especially 5G, achieves greater scale and widespread adoption. 'However, current adoption of more advanced technologies in LMICs is lagging behind adoption in high-income countries,' the telco association had cautioned. Meanwhile, as geopolitical tensions strain industries, including telecoms, Roy said India can emerge as a trusted ally for sourcing safe and secure connectivity solutions. 'Our technology and solutions become critical for building those networks over here, not only in countries where it is a very safe, secure environment, but also when those companies build their networks in other countries where they want the network to be secure. Those are the opportunities where Indian equipment has a very prominent role of being trusted equipment.'The executive said. Currently, the global 5G equipment market is dominated by a handful of companies, including European vendors Ericsson and Nokia, China's Huawei and ZTE, and Korean Samsung although India, too, is extremely bullish about its indigenous telecom stack which is being deployed by a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)-led consortium and ITI Limited for state-controlled Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited 's ( BSNL ) commercial 4G foray.

Bharat Telecom 2025: India emerges as hub of telecom manufacturing, network innovation
NEW DELHI: The Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC), in collaboration with the Department of Telecommunications ( DoT ), organised the 22nd edition of the two-day Bharat Telecom Event 2025 between May 6, 2025, and May 7, 2025, to support the country's vision of becoming a global hub for telecom manufacturing, services, and exports. The event was inaugurated by Jyotiraditya Scindia , Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, in the presence of Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani , Minister of State for Communications, senior government officials, telecom industry leaders, foreign delegates, and innovators. 'Bharat Telecom is not just a conference — it is a declaration of India's intent to shape the future of global connectivity through innovation, collaboration and inclusive growth,' Scindia said while inaugurating the conference. 'When ideas, innovation and intent come together in harmony, they create not a cacophony, but a symphony — and Bharat Telecom is that symphony of global collaboration and opportunity,' he had said. The union minister also discussed the Centre's plan to roll-out a $4 billion investment plan to connect every village and attain 100% telecom connectivity saturation, the mulit-billion dollar invested in the deployment of fifth-generation (5G) networks, mobile phone production in India, and Apple's strategy to source all iPhones from the country. "The PLI scheme for telecom and network products has catalysed domestic manufacturing hubs. This policy has attracted investment worth ₹4,000 crores, generated sales of more than ₹80,000 crores, and created substantial employment opportunities while building self-reliance in critical telecom equipment for the country," Pemmsani, in turn, said at the Bharat Telecom 2025 event. Arnob Roy , Chairman, TEPC, in his welcome address said, "Bharat Telecom showcases the transformative power of India's indigenous telecom ecosystem, highlighting our unparalleled growth and innovation in the global telecom industry." Roy said that the Indian government's strategic policies have fostered innovation and manufacturing in the telecom sector. Bharat Telecom 2025 included multiple panel discussions with panelists deliberating and discussing themes such as ' Telecom API Economy ', ' Private Networks for Industry 4.0 ', and ' Next-Gen Broadband: The Catalyst for a Digital Leap '. Parallelly, the event also held the Bharat Telecom Exhibition 2025, which included homegrown vendors and services firms Tejas Network, HFCL , C-DOT, Sensorise, GX Group, XS Infosol, Huber+Suhner, Indio Networks, Niral Networks, Astrome, INVAS Technologies, Sparsh CCTV, and others. It also featured thematic exhibitions, high-impact business-to-business (B2B) meetings, strategic networking sessions and knowledge-sharing forums focusing on cutting-edge communication technologies such as 5G, optical fibre, broadband infrastructure, satellite communication, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI)-driven networks, and more. The event saw proactive international participation, with more than 134 foreign delegates from over 35 countries, representing government bodies, private enterprises, vendors, and innovative firms. Speaking at the event, Dr Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Communications, said there are moments in a nation's journey when it not only participates in global conversations but defines their course. 'Today, India stands ready not merely as a market or consumer but as a creator, partner and trusted provider of world-class telecom solutions.
