Fighter jets, missiles, iPhones, EVs... China has been kind to US... Should India be worried?

Fighter, missile, iPhone, EV... China has been kind to US... Should India be worried? US President Donald Trump has claimed that Chinese President Xi Jinping has agreed to send rare earths and magnets. This move can reduce tensions between the world's two largest economies. Amid the tension over tariffs, China imposed export control on such minerals on April 4. Magnets made of rare earth elements are very important and are used in iPhones, electric vehicles, fighter aircraft like F-35 and missile systems. China has complete control over their supply and has stopped the supply of rare earth magnets to the US as well as India. When asked Trump whether Chinese President Xi Jinping had agreed to export rare earths? Trump replied, 'Yes, they have agreed.' However, the Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately comment on this. Trump's statement comes a day after a rare conversation with Xi Jinping. In another sign of easing tensions over the issue, China has granted temporary export licences to rare earth suppliers to the top three US automobile companies. US officials will meet Chinese officials in London on Monday for further talks. Political pressure 'We have made great progress on the deal with China,' Trump said. The two countries reached an agreement in Geneva, Switzerland on May 12. Under this, most of the heavy tariffs imposed on each other since Trump took office in January were agreed to be rolled back for 90 days. Financial markets, worried about trade disruptions, were excited by the news. But China decided to suspend exports of several critical minerals and magnets in April. This disrupted the supply of essential goods to automobile companies, computer chip makers and military contractors around the world. Trump accused China of violating the Geneva agreement. He ordered a ban on chip-design software and other shipments to China. Beijing rejected the claim and threatened retaliation. Rare earths and other critical minerals are a weapon for China. If companies have trouble making mineral-based products and economic growth slows, Trump could face domestic political pressure. US has got relief but Indian auto companies are facing a lot of trouble. Nine Indian companies making auto components have got the application for import passed from the Chinese embassy. Despite this, the supply has not started. China's Commerce Ministry has not yet given approval for this. These magnets are very important for electric vehicles. They are also used in parts like gear system and drive train.

Government urged to address structural issues faced by the textile and apparel sector

The government should address the structural challenges faced by the Indian textile and apparel industry to achieve $ 100 billion exports by 2030, according to stakeholders of the industry. At a meeting held in Coimbatore on Friday (June 6, 2025) to discuss the challenges faced by the textile and apparel exporters, they discussed the reasons for the nil growth in textile and apparel exports for almost a decade. The exports are stagnant at about $ 40 billion in value. The volume of exports has declined which is a matter of concern, they said. The exports should grow at 17% CAGR to achieve the target of $ 100 billion by 2030. Structural issues, including raw material prices and high labour costs, are a major hurdle apart from cost of capital, power tariff, and relatively higher lead time to deliver orders. Since the return on investment is not viable, the industry is not ready to invest in expansion projects and build capacities. A report by AT Kearney Consulting and the Foundation for Economic Development said the government introduced schemes such as the PM MITRA, PLI, advance authorisation, etc to address the cost issues. However, according to the stakeholders, for the industry to tap opportunities in the international market and register growth, the basic challenges need to be addressed as these schemes have not given the required cost advantage.

India uniquely placed to benefit from breakthroughs in AI: Indian CG, Shanghai

India, as an IT superpower, is uniquely placed to benefit from breakthroughs in AI and is set to emerge as the third-largest economy, India's Consul General of Shanghai Pratik Mathur said on Friday. Mathur, speaking at an annual Consul Generals and CEOs Business Forum in Shanghai, said, "It's a great time to be in Asia, especially India. We are the world's largest and fastest growing democracy with a significant population in the lower to middle class that's educated, aspirational and hungry for consumption." India is uniquely placed to benefit from the heralding of industrial revolution 4.0 and breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI), he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 목구멍 끓는가래까지 녹여낸 [국내1%] 마신 즉시 "기관지염/가슴통증"까지 벗어나~ 목구멍 가래·기관지 복구법 Undo India's economy, which is currently $4 trillion, is expected to be close to $30 trillion by 2047 and the country also has the advantage of younger demographics, Mathur said in his speech posted on the Consulate's website. Just a few days ago, India overtook Japan to become the fourth-largest economy in the world and is expected to soon overtake Germany to become the third-largest economy, he said. Live Events The economic growth spurt in India can be traced to several proximate factors. For starters, the Government of India launched the Make in India programme in 2014 for promoting India as a manufacturing hub and rolled out various incentives such as concessional loans, tax rebates as well Production Link Incentives scheme (PLI), he said. The recent measures taken by the government are indeed revolutionary, promoting indigenisation efforts in ship building, private participation in nuclear power sector, while at the same time boosting the consumption-based economy by giving tax breaks to a 400 million strong middle class, arguably one of the largest in the world, he said.
