Homegrown companies to offer affordable 4G, 5G solutions for emerging markets: TEPC's Arnob Roy
NEW DELHI: India's homegrown telecom companies have the potential to sell affordable 4G and fifth-generation ( 5G ) network solutions, particularly in emerging markets, that are embarking on their network expansion and modernisation journey, said a senior executive of Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council ( TEPC ). 'There is a great opportunity for us. There is still a lot of 4G expansion happening across the world, and a lot of 5G upgrades are also happening. In both places, our technology is very relevant. This is where the opportunities are because India has an environment similar to many of the emerging markets,' Arnob Roy , chairman, TEPC, told ETTelecom. Roy said that Indian companies have a complete, end-to-end telecom stack covering wireless and wireline networks, which they can sell in the emerging markets. 'Similarly, all these mobile networks also need a complete backhaul network over fiber. There is also a need for broadband networks and many other things in countries where internet penetration is not as deep as India,' he added. 'That is where, I think, the technology from India is very relevant because of the nature of provenness that we have in similar operating conditions,' said Roy, who is also the chief operating officer (COO) & whole-time director of Tejas Networks . Several low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Asia Pacific region are either expanding 4G or investing in the latest-generation 5G networks. London-headquartered GSMA, in a report earlier this year, said that LMICs are expected to realise an increasing proportion of economic benefits as mobile technology, especially 5G, achieves greater scale and widespread adoption. 'However, current adoption of more advanced technologies in LMICs is lagging behind adoption in high-income countries,' the telco association had cautioned. Meanwhile, as geopolitical tensions strain industries, including telecoms, Roy said India can emerge as a trusted ally for sourcing safe and secure connectivity solutions. 'Our technology and solutions become critical for building those networks over here, not only in countries where it is a very safe, secure environment, but also when those companies build their networks in other countries where they want the network to be secure. Those are the opportunities where Indian equipment has a very prominent role of being trusted equipment.'The executive said. Currently, the global 5G equipment market is dominated by a handful of companies, including European vendors Ericsson and Nokia, China's Huawei and ZTE, and Korean Samsung although India, too, is extremely bullish about its indigenous telecom stack which is being deployed by a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)-led consortium and ITI Limited for state-controlled Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited 's ( BSNL ) commercial 4G foray.

Apple plan to make India a manufacturing hub makes economic sense: Jyotiraditya Scindia
Live Events Approval for Starlink is a complicated issue but is in the final stages, minister of state for communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said Tuesday, adding that the Elon Musk-owned satcom company will at best play a minor role in providing connectivity in India as compared to traditional telecom companies."It is a little complicated issue (permit for Starlink). We have to look from multiple angles. Security is one of them. Definitely, since it is in the final stages, we will get back on that," Pemmasani said, while speaking on the sidelines of the Bharat Telecom added that the security rules for satcom announced Monday night were crucial, especially in the present scenario where hostile nation Pakistan is making an attempt to hack the country's at the same event, telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that Apple has decided to move its entire mobile phone production to India in the coming years. He added that investment in the country makes economic sense for every original equipment manufacturer and isn't an act of goodwill."Apple has decided to source and produce all its mobile phones in India in the years to come," Scindia said. "When you invest in India, you are choosing affordability, you are choosing reliability, you are choosing originality."Speaking at the event, organised by the Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council in partnership with the Department of Telecommunications, Pemmasani said around 15% of global iPhone output now comes from India, highlighting the country's increasing participation in the global supply chain for the US-based technology firm Apple's remarks come after Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company would source the majority of iPhones sold in the US from India in the June quarter, in a bid to avoid the high tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration on shipments from China. Production in China will cater to iPhone sales in other further said the Centre is preparing a $4-billion investment plan to connect every village in India with high-speed broadband to achieve 100% telecom connectivity saturation in remote regions. "Since June of last year, 17,000 towers out of a planned 27,000 towers have been set up in nearly 36,000 villages," the minister said. He added that 99% of India's villages have been connected by 5G within 22 months of rollout, with more than 470,000 towers set up with almost ₹4 lakh crore of investment.

PM Modi's resolve transformed India into a global digital leader: Jyotiraditya Scindia
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's bold vision and unwavering resolve have transformed India from a digital follower into a global digital leader -- turning aspirations into infrastructure and policy into progress, Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, said here on Tuesday. After inaugurating the 'Bharat Telecom 2025' in the national capital, attended by more than 130 foreign delegates from over 35 countries, the minister said 'Bharat Telecom' is not just a conference -- it is a declaration of India's intent to shape the future of global connectivity through innovation, collaboration and inclusive growth. 'When ideas, innovation and intent come together in harmony, they create not a cacophony, but a symphony, and 'Bharat Telecom' is that symphony of global collaboration and opportunity,' the minister told the gathering, while highlighting India's export potential. Organised by the Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC), in collaboration with Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the event plays a significant role in India's vision to become a global hub for telecom manufacturing, services, and exports. 'We're not just connecting villages; we're connecting futures. Every tower we raise, every byte we transmit, brings 1.4 billion people closer to opportunity', Scindia asserted. 'In just 22 months, we connected 99 per cent of our villages with 5G and brought 82 per cent of our population onto the network, deploying 470,000 towers. This is not evolution; it is a telecom revolution,' he stressed. The minister further pointed out that this digital highway we have built across India is not merely about communication. It is the infrastructure of infrastructure, empowering 1.4 billion citizens with access to healthcare, education, governance, and economic opportunity. He said India has not only caught up with the world in areas like 4G and 5G, but is now leading the charge, with sweeping reforms and technological innovation shaping the country's trajectory. Scindia also underlined the role of India's telecom sector as a transformative force and described the nation's evolution from expensive, limited mobile access in the 1990s to now being the world's second-largest telecom market and the cheapest data provider. Speaking at the event, Dr Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Communications, said there are moments in a nation's journey when it not only participates in global conversations but defines their course. 'Today, India stands ready not merely as a market or consumer but as a creator, partner and trusted provider of world-class telecom solutions. The narrative has changed from a historical made-for-India to made-by-India,' said Dr Pemmasani. He emphasised that India is undergoing a pivotal transformation in the global telecom arena, evolving from a consumer to a creator of technology. Arnob Roy, Chairman, TEPC, said that 'Bharat Telecom' showcases the transformative power of India's indigenous telecom ecosystem, highlighting its unparalleled growth and innovation in the global telecom industry.
