Strong second half sees Galway defeat Tipperary

TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship: Galway 1-13 Tipperary 0-7 Connacht champions Galway began their TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship campaign with an impressive second quarter in Tuam Stadium to run out comfortable nine point victors over Tipperary. The Tribeswomen did the damage with 1-8 unanswered, including Leanne Coen's goal, to lead 1-10 to 0-1 at half-time but Tipperary put in a much improved second half display. Galway took the stiff wind at the start and opened on two minutes with Louise Ward slotting over. Olivia Divilly also got off the mark in the sixth minute. It wasn't one way traffic as Tipperary dropped a couple of balls towards Aishling Moloney. Caitlin Kennedy also struck low but off target. However, a free won by Ava Fennessy on 18 minutes led to Moloney converting a free. That was after a seven minute hold up when Galway attacker Shauna Hynes was injured. Her replacement was 2024 captain Ailbhe Davoren who also played a pivotal role. The key score was the goal on 22 minutes. Divilly, Nicola Ward and Davoren played a part before the latter passed across to the unmarked Coen who kicked to the net. And from there, the hosts proceeded to dominate. Kate Thompson, Divilly (2) and Davoren made it 1-6 to 0-1 as Tipperary struggled with kick outs. That being said, they did drop three dangerous balls towards the opposing square but keeper Dearbhla Gower showed good hands. At the other end, Galway added four more white flags starting with Divilly that could have been a goal. Kate Slevin added two points either side of Davoren's second. Slevin tallied straight after the restart but Galway only managed three scores during the period. Slevin got the second on 43 minutes before Divilly struck her fifth in injury time. Tipperary will take from solace from their second half effort, though an injury to Kennedy will be a concern. Moloney delivered five points, three from play, while Emma Morrissey punched the air after slotting one over from the right. Moloney also twice went for goal, once hitting the crossbar. But Galway's first half display was enough to take the win before heading to Donegal in seven days. Half time subs the difference for Kerry in dominant second half display to see off Mayo

TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship Group 2: Kerry 0-13 Mayo 1-4 All-Ireland champions Kerry made a successful opening round defence of their title when they proved too strong for a spirited Mayo side earning a hard fought win at Austin Stack Park this afternoon. Kerry lined out without four starters, Deirdre Kearney, Aoife Dillane, Danielle O'Leary and Rachel Dwyer while Mayo also made four changes with Ella Brennan, Ciara Whyte, Ava McDonnell and Alannah Devereux missing out. But once Kerry introduced Danielle O'Leary for the second half she made Mayo pay with four points from play and the Westerners never looked like causing a shock. Kerry had the wind in the opening half and did not make the most of it as they struggled to gain primary possession at midfield. Anna Galvin gave the Kingdom the dream start with a point inside the opening minute and doubled their total when Siofra O'Shea finished a Caoimhe Evans pass with a superb point. O'Shea and Aisling O'Connell added points for Kerry but they were rocked back in the 13th minute when a high Hannah Reape effort for a point dropped short and though Clodagh Keane's initial effort was saved by Emma Costello, Keane finished the rebound to the net. Katie Brosnan then converted a free but Mayo dominated possession for the remainder of the half with Reape, Erin Murray, and Danielle Caldwell causing the Kerry defence problems. Two points from Sinead Walsh closed the gap to a single point at the break, 0-7 to 1-3. Kerry manager Mark Bourke was forced to introduce Danielle O'Leary and Aoife Dillane for the second half and O'Leary proved to be the Kingdom's saviour. She kicked four points from play and was unstoppable in general play. Mayo never got going in the second period and only managed a single point from a free kicked by one of their best performers in Walsh and never troubled the scoreboard from play. Kerry with Aishling O'Connell, Emma Costello, Mary O'Connell, Caoimhe Evans and Siofra O'Shea ensured that Kingdom continue their unbeaten run. Scorers for Kerry: S O'Shea and D O'Leary (0-4 each), N Carmody (0-2), A O'Connell, K Brosnan (1f), and A Galvin (0-1 each). Galway blitz Leitrim to set up Connacht final showdown with Mayo

Galway 2-22 Leitrim 0-5 A RUTHLESSLY EFFICIENT first ten minutes delivered 1-8 without reply and laid the foundations for an emphatic Galway victory over Leitrim in Round 2 of the TG4 Connacht Senior Football Championship. Daniel Moynihan's side started the defence of their provincial crown at Avant Money Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada with a tempo and intent that put the game beyond the hosts from an early juncture. Corner forward Andrea Trill was the last member of the Galway attack on the scoresheet when finishing their opening goal on 10 minutes. By then Leanne Coen, Lynsey Noone, Eva Noone, Olivia Divilly and Róisín Leonard had all raised white flags. Such was Galway's early accuracy, they didn't register their first wide until the 12th minute. Leitrim stemmed the tide with points from Aoife Gilmartin, Leah Fox and goalkeeper Michelle Guckian. Advertisement It stood at 1-13 to 0-3 at the break after Galway's scoring rate understandably dipped and Divilly, Trill, Leonard and Coen tagged on second-quarter points. The Tribeswomen would accelerate further clear after the break with their defence staying resolute and further scores coming from Divilly and Leonard, whose eight points arrived from play and placed balls. Eva Noone tucked away the winners' second goal on 53 minutes, while Leanne Coen took her return to five points and Kate Slevin and Hannah Noone also found the range for Galway late on. Their place in the Connacht final against Mayo is now assured, while it's on to the TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship for a Leitrim side that had second-half points from Guckian and Muireann Devaney.
