TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship: Galway 1-13 Tipperary 0-7
Connacht champions Galway began their TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship campaign with an impressive second quarter in Tuam Stadium to run out comfortable nine point victors over Tipperary.
The Tribeswomen did the damage with 1-8 unanswered, including Leanne Coen's goal, to lead 1-10 to 0-1 at half-time but Tipperary put in a much improved second half display.
Galway took the stiff wind at the start and opened on two minutes with Louise Ward slotting over. Olivia Divilly also got off the mark in the sixth minute.
It wasn't one way traffic as Tipperary dropped a couple of balls towards Aishling Moloney. Caitlin Kennedy also struck low but off target. However, a free won by Ava Fennessy on 18 minutes led to Moloney converting a free.
That was after a seven minute hold up when Galway attacker Shauna Hynes was injured. Her replacement was 2024 captain Ailbhe Davoren who also played a pivotal role.
The key score was the goal on 22 minutes. Divilly, Nicola Ward and Davoren played a part before the latter passed across to the unmarked Coen who kicked to the net. And from there, the hosts proceeded to dominate.
Kate Thompson, Divilly (2) and Davoren made it 1-6 to 0-1 as Tipperary struggled with kick outs. That being said, they did drop three dangerous balls towards the opposing square but keeper Dearbhla Gower showed good hands.
At the other end, Galway added four more white flags starting with Divilly that could have been a goal. Kate Slevin added two points either side of Davoren's second.
Slevin tallied straight after the restart but Galway only managed three scores during the period. Slevin got the second on 43 minutes before Divilly struck her fifth in injury time.
Tipperary will take from solace from their second half effort, though an injury to Kennedy will be a concern. Moloney delivered five points, three from play, while Emma Morrissey punched the air after slotting one over from the right.
Moloney also twice went for goal, once hitting the crossbar. But Galway's first half display was enough to take the win before heading to Donegal in seven days.
Scorers for Galway: O Divilly (0-5, 1f); K Slevin (0-4, 2f); L Coen (1-0); A Davoren (0-2); L Ward, K Thompson (0-1 each).

Horan on Armagh's need to go full bore: The most dangerous thing is to ease off

Despite already securing a quarter-final spot, Armagh will approach their upcoming Sam Maguire series tie against Galway with full intent, according to former Mayo manager James Horan. The All-Ireland champions have already topped Group 4 ahead of their fixture at Kingspan Breffni this Saturday. Remarkably, it is the third consecutive year that Armagh have finished top of their group. In 2023 and 2024, the team who finished one place behind them was Galway. Speaking on the Irish Examiner's Gaelic football podcast, Horan said Kieran McGeeney's side will target another win to set them up for their trip to Croke Park in two weeks. 'There is no such thing as a game meaning nothing at this time of the year,' he said. 'In terms of development and growth, that is where Armagh are. Every game, we have talked about their consistency. Armagh I don't think will change a thing. They have momentum and their belief set is based on hard work and a way of playing. 'They have been doing that for years and years. Look at how much they've grown already. Do you think because they have qualified already, they are going to give away that initiative and momentum by dropping down the gears? It is not in their psyche.' Horan cited the example of Donegal, who started the National League with three victories in a row before winning one of their final four games. The Ulster champions now must defeat Mayo in their final Group 2 game and hope Tyrone lose out to Cavan. 'It is the most dangerous thing you can do as a manager. I think Donegal are trying to chase that momentum since the third round of the league. They started so well, this force of nature coming at us. I think it is such a dangerous strategy. 'I don't see them doing anything different. Maybe they will try one or two other players. They might test one different thing on the field, but ultimately it will be the Armagh we know and expect. There will be nothing easy.' Meanwhile, despite the recent drama, Horan believes the GAA are right to change the All-Ireland senior football championship format. A new format will be in place next season with the group phase abolished and replaced by a qualifier-style series. 'It is classic recency bias. This year it is brilliant, every group has something to play for and this weekend has so much to play for. All people want is a bit of drama where anything can happen,' he said. 'It is great this year. Everything seems to be working right this year, with rules and everything else. It is all combining and working out ok. Should we get rid of it? If you take this year on its own, you would say no but what were we saying this time last year or the year before that? Too many games etc. Overall, the sample size of one year isn't enough to make a decision. Changing it might be the right play.'

Huw Lawlor: TJ Reid's attitude and professionalism an example for Kilkenny players

Huw Lawlor has hailed the longevity of TJ Reid as the 37-year-old claimed his 14th Leinster SHC medal on Sunday. The seven-time All-Ireland winner and seven-time All Star was only second to Lawlor as Kilkenny's best player in the victory over Galway and the defender was generous in his praise for the elder stateman of the team. 'Sure, he's a class apart, you know what I mean? You can forget about his age or whatever. The example he sets there in terms of work-rate and stuff like that, it's phenomenal, so it is. 'He's such a professional in terms of the way he sets up and the way he goes at it. He's a super player, his attitude and his work rate is top class, and I think that's what drives it on for him.' Two-time All Star Lawlor himself is playing some of the best hurling of his career as much as he is keen to play it down. 'Look, that kind of thing comes in fits and starts, I suppose. You can go through in form and out of form and stuff. 'We're just trying to get through the 70 minutes in the full-back line and try and stop them scoring, and if we can set up our own scores as well, then we'll be happy enough.' It might have seemed like a fade-out by Kilkenny but Lawlor had anticipated Galway would have a period of dominance and it manifested itself in an unanswered 1-6 towards the end of the game before The Cats settled themselves to seal the win. 'I suppose for that 55 minutes we probably choked the game and we controlled it well. Look, they were always going to get a purple patch at some stage and we were trying to limit that, but I thought the boys worked very hard all throughout. 'It's something that's happened to us before and we probably need to manage the game a little bit better from that point of view. But look, we got the scores and we got the kind of few interceptions that we needed to get over the line there.' You won't hear the 29-year-old complaining about the four-week gap to their July 6 All-Ireland semi-final being too long. 'Four weeks now to get the bodies right and get loads of training in. It's been a very busy six, seven, eight weeks there so it's a good chance to get training and for different lads to try get on to the team.'

Cork fans overjoyed by Munster win are backing Rebels to lift Liam McCarthy for first time in 20 years

Thousands spilt onto the pitch at the TUS Gaelic Grounds after the conclusion of last Saturday's game, where the Rebels ended their Munster famine after penalties, following an intense and gruelling final. And despite the full-time whistle being blown two days previous, it was still the talk of the town among people in the city yesterday as the Irish Independent discovered in a vox pop on the streets of Cork. 'It was an unbelievable atmosphere,' said Harry, sporting his Cork GAA training top. 'I was on the pitch straightaway when the penalty was missed! 'I'd say they'll go all the way.' Bryan isn't entirely convinced that the Rebels will lift Liam McCarthy this season, but he says the city is revelling in their provincial title. 'It's quite a rarity really, I've never seen a GAA match go to penalties,' he said, having rounded off a perfect Saturday evening by going to see the Stereophonics in Musgrave Park after the game. 'I think they absolutely deserved it. I won't mention when they previously met Limerick, but it was fantastic this time around. I was delighted to see them win. 'I won't say they'll win the All-Ireland because you shouldn't jinx things like that, but if it's what people want to say, then why not?' Following Bryan was Nemo Rangers' clubman Barry, who offered an in-depth analysis of last Saturday's match. 'It was a very tough game. The hurling wasn't great in it, so it was just a physical battle, which probably made it more entertaining. It was exciting, but there was nothing between the teams. If they played 10 times, each could win five times, so if they meet later on in the year, it'll be a tough one to call.' However, Barry says the win, after a brutal round robin defeat, is a huge tonic for Pat Ryan's side. 'To reign in from losing by 16 points to that was good for Cork. Even if they came any bit close, it would have been good, because I think they can see themselves beating Limerick again. 'They could be against Tipperary or Galway next, and they didn't put away Tipp the last time, so hopefully Cork can overcome Tipperary, and I'd fancy Limerick to overcome Kilkenny, and I don't think there'll be anything in it again.' However, the Douglas man is backing the Rebels to lift Liam. 'I think they can do it. I think the hurt from last year will push them on. Losing by a point after extra time (in the All-Ireland final against Clare), after some dubious refereeing decisions. That will hopefully drive them on this year.' And if it happened, Welshman Peter says it would give a massive boost to the city. 'It was really exciting stuff. I'm more of a soccer and rugby person myself, but it was a really exciting match. It's always good to see a Cork team win, and I'd always support any Cork team! 'It would be great for the city and for the team, for all the dedication they put into it. There are a couple of games to go, but hopefully they can get over the line!'
