Fans outraged as Grand Theft Auto VI delayed, but Rockstar announce release date
Grand Theft Auto fans have been left disappointed as Rockstar has finally announced a release date for Grand Theft Auto VI.
GTA VI is, quite frankly, the most anticipated product ever — video game or otherwise — with the joke 'we got [X] before GTA VI' frankly overstaying its welcome. Yes, the meme has died before we even got GTA VI.
And despite Rockstar releasing a teaser trailer confirming that we're returning to Vice City with the game's first-ever female protagonist, the 2025 release date had fans salivating for more information all this year, as a release was rumoured for Q3 of 2025. However, most fans have realised that, alas, it was probably going to be delayed — with the game's developers confirming that the game will be released on May 26, 2026 — being delayed by a year.
'Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026,' Rockstar Games wrote on their Newswire. 'We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.
'With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve. The game's developers confirmed that the game will be released on May 26, 2026. While a release date has been finally confirmed, fans of the game have been left heartbroken and outraged that we'll be waiting a year for the latest GTA — with YouTuber TGG simply tweeting 'AAAAAAAH' across several tweets (same, to be fair).
Others shared videos of past GTA character Trevor Phillips banging his head against a tree in frustration, while another asked for any other information, even a screenshot, from the upcoming game.

Others pointed out that the game's delay was a matter of when, not if, with one commenting 'The delay everyone kinda expected.'
'Twitter flipping out about GTA 6 being delayed like it wasn't the most obvious thing ever,' another wrote, while another wrote 'On one hand this is disappointing. On the other, I really hope this extra time means we get an incredible complete experience on launch just like RDR2 was. Good luck on development, we will be there.'
Grand Theft Auto VI will release on May 26, 2026. And if you'll excuse me, I'm going to watch the teaser trailer again and perhaps shed a tear.
