Fans outraged as Grand Theft Auto VI delayed, but Rockstar announce release date

Extra.ie02-05-2025

Grand Theft Auto fans have been left disappointed as Rockstar has finally announced a release date for Grand Theft Auto VI.
GTA VI is, quite frankly, the most anticipated product ever — video game or otherwise — with the joke 'we got [X] before GTA VI' frankly overstaying its welcome. Yes, the meme has died before we even got GTA VI.
And despite Rockstar releasing a teaser trailer confirming that we're returning to Vice City with the game's first-ever female protagonist, the 2025 release date had fans salivating for more information all this year, as a release was rumoured for Q3 of 2025. However, most fans have realised that, alas, it was probably going to be delayed — with the game's developers confirming that the game will be released on May 26, 2026 — being delayed by a year.
'Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026,' Rockstar Games wrote on their Newswire. 'We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.
'With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve. The game's developers confirmed that the game will be released on May 26, 2026. 'We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.'
While a release date has been finally confirmed, fans of the game have been left heartbroken and outraged that we'll be waiting a year for the latest GTA — with YouTuber TGG simply tweeting 'AAAAAAAH' across several tweets (same, to be fair).
Others shared videos of past GTA character Trevor Phillips banging his head against a tree in frustration, while another asked for any other information, even a screenshot, from the upcoming game.
NOT EVEN SCREENSHOTS DAWG ROCKSTAR PLEASE SHOW US SOMETHING 😭 — Synth Potato🥔 (@SynthPotato) May 2, 2025
Others pointed out that the game's delay was a matter of when, not if, with one commenting 'The delay everyone kinda expected.'
'Twitter flipping out about GTA 6 being delayed like it wasn't the most obvious thing ever,' another wrote, while another wrote 'On one hand this is disappointing. On the other, I really hope this extra time means we get an incredible complete experience on launch just like RDR2 was. Good luck on development, we will be there.'
Grand Theft Auto VI will release on May 26, 2026. And if you'll excuse me, I'm going to watch the teaser trailer again and perhaps shed a tear.

Beyond The Ice Palace II: A well-polished 8-bit throwback but leaves you feeling a little cold

AS I mean, just ask Grand Theft Auto fans. 11 This sequel has been 35 years in the making Credit: PQube But Beyond The Ice Palace 2 breaks all the records for sequels - this one is a massive 35 years in the making. So have those years been kind? Well, yes and no. Beyond The Ice Palace II is a polished version of the 1988 cult classic. A fantasy action platformer which reeks of Ghost 'N Goblins dipped in a little Castlevania. 11 The retro side-scroller offers up plenty of hidden areas Credit: PQube Unfortunately the clunky controls can be somewhat sluggish which results in a slow-paced side-scroller. And, if you're not careful, missed ledge-grabs will have you cursing the 8-bit gods. But again, this all results in a plush throwback which is a good thing for retro fans. Plot wise, the Cursed King has been chained up for a couple of decades but has managed to set himself free and is now keen on some bloody revenge. Most read in Gaming 11 You play the Cursed King who has broken free from his chains Credit: PQube Weaponry is a little thin on the ground sadly, with the King's chains of captivity his main source of death and destruction. There's also a grappling hook which, due to the slow-pace of the game, resulted in plenty of missed links when swinging from one poorly-positioned hook to the next. 11 There are plenty of retro Commadore 64 vibes to this game Credit: PQube This game is tricky too. There were numerous occasions where I ended up miles back towards the start of a level after painfully succumbing to a random flame-tossing skeleton. And this difficulty level only intensifies when you take on the wonderfully creative end-of-level bosses. 11 End of level bosses are giant and epic Credit: PQube They are gigantic - think God of War but minus the detail - and some can try your patience as you are quickly wiped out. However, it's easy to turn all this into a positive - Beyond The Ice Palace 2 makes you work hard for victory. And that's no bad thing. 11 Strategy is key to this Beyond The Ice Palace II which can be tricky Credit: PQube The boss designs are bonkers and random and the game itself looks really clean. A plush 8-bit homage with a bit of polish to make it shine. 11 There is a plush finish to the visuals Credit: PQube Despite the lack of weapons, you can upgrade your abilities using power crystals found along the way. There are plenty of secret locations to discover too and chests to open after solving fairly basic puzzles. 11 There plenty to like, but also frustrate, in Beyond The Ice Palace II Credit: PQube Although it feels quite linear, there is an opportunity to go back to previous areas of the game and explore previously unreachable sections. And there is a thrillingly oppressive nature to Beyond The Ice Palace 2 which has classic C64 game vibes to it. 11 There's limited weaponry but you can upgrade your chains Credit: PQube There's a lot here to like, but also a lot to frustrate. Having said that, there's enough fun to justify the price so long as you can shake off the little niggles. 11 The retro art sits well with the modern gameplay Credit: PQube It's retro pixel art with modern gameplay twist, but it is sadly lacking that consistency to crown it a worthy sequel. It wouldn't be the end of the world if we had to wait another 35 years for the follow up. Beyond The Ice Palace II FORMATS: PlayStation 5 (reviewed) , Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PC PRICE: £18.99 PUBLISHER: PQube/PixelHeart DEVELOPER: Storybird Studio AGE RATING: 12+ SCORE: 3.5/5

Videogame publishers rush to seize launch window after 'GTA VI' delay

Days after Take-Two Interactive delayed the launch of "Grand Theft Auto VI" to May next year, rival publishers are using that opportunity to lock in release dates for their games to avoid a direct clash with one of the industry's most anticipated titles. Analysts and industry executives told Reuters they expect a wave of announcements for autumn, as the absence of Take-Two-owned Rockstar Games' potential blockbuster from this year's lineup creates breathing room for other titles. "Publishers had delayed the announcement of the release dates of their games. Releasing after or even just before GTA VI would diminish their sales," said Obbe Vermeij, former technical director at Rockstar Games. "Expect a number of announcements in the coming months of games that will now target fall release dates," he added. Electronic Arts was the first to act last week, announcing four days after the "GTA" delay that it would release its new "Battlefield" title this fiscal year, which ends in March 2026. Take-Two is also planning to use that window to launch its other game, "Mafia: The Old Country." Other titles could also benefit, including Techland's "Dying Light: The Beast" and Embracer's "Killing Floor 3," which have yet to lock in launch dates. The window from September to early December is a golden stretch for the gaming industry, buoyed by public holidays and a year-end shopping rush. But not many have the capacity to tap that opportunity for their new releases. Long development cycles for major titles - some of which can stretch from five to seven years - mean most big games cannot be rescheduled at short notice. Instead, the period may serve as a sweet spot for expansion packs, remastered titles and smaller studios, particularly for developers with games already nearing completion, analysts said. For established publishers like EA and Activision, the delay could come as a boon. Competing directly with a title as massive as "GTA VI" could have dented sales of "Battlefield". EA's strategic timing with "Battlefield" boosted its shares as investors cheered the return of the popular first-person shooter franchise. The company's CEO, Andrew Wilson, was not shy about the opportunity on a post-earnings call earlier this month. The launch window is "clearer than it was before," he said. Joost van Dreunen, games professor at NYU's Stern School of Business, expects EA to sell 4 million to 5 million units of the new "Battlefield" by the end of fiscal year 2026, but believes it would have sold 3 million to 4 million units if "GTA VI" had not been delayed. EA's annual releases such as the "FC" soccer franchise and "Madden NFL" will also have less competition in the period. "It does create opportunity for them to maybe further monetise their games that have a live ops component to it, whether it's the sports games or things like Apex Legends," said Chris Hewish, strategy chief at gaming fintech firm Xsolla and former studio head at VR game developer Survios. But a boost in sales for the publishers rescheduling their titles for fall 2025 is not guaranteed, as an increase in the number of launches would intensify competition at a time when consumers tighten budgets and get picky with buying new games. The delay of "GTA VI" has also raised broader questions about the industry's growth prospects for 2025. The game was expected to be a sales juggernaut, drawing in billions within weeks and driving console sales. Its delay comes at a time when prices of popular consoles such as Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation have already gone up in response to the hefty tariffs the US has imposed on major manufacturing hubs including Japan, China and Vietnam. Sales of the consoles were declining already, and the price hikes could worsen that. Still, there have been some signs that gaming was proving resilient amid the economic uncertainty. Both Roblox and EA issued forecasts that were above Wall Street estimates, and some analysts said that titles stepping in for "GTA VI" in the fall could help drive the industry's growth.

Joe Duffy has emotional moment on Late Late Show, but viewers ask the same question about another guest

Joe Duffy teared up talking about his mother on the Late Late Show, after announcing his retirement from RTÉ. The Liveline presenter announced on Thursday that he was leaving the national broadcaster after 37 years, and 27 years on Liveline — with him chatting about his tenure on the Late Late on Friday night. Never shying away from speaking about his mother Mabel, Joe choked up a little bit when speaking about her and just how far the country has come — even joking that his mum would downplay what he did when working for RTÉ. 'I know, anyone who listens to Liveline's going 'oh, Joe's going to talk about Mabel,' [but] Mabel my mother had a great line,' Joe told Patrick Kielty. 'She was in Ballyer, down at the shops, and someone who returned to Ballyer who'd been away for a few years, said 'Mabel, I heard your Joseph is working at RTÉ. What's he doing?' and she said 'he answers the phones.'' While downplaying answering the phones in the context of being one of the highest rated radio shows in the country, Joe said that his mother's advice to him was 'you're never as good as anyone says you are, but you're never as bad as anyone says you are.' People loved listening to Joe's interview, with one writing on Twitter (X) 'What a national treasure Joe Duffy is.' Pic: Late Late Show/X 'Don't forget Joe Duffy is a man of the people,' another wrote, while a third wrote 'That was a great interview. Pathos and humour. Joe comes across as very humble.' While Joe Duffy being on the Late Late was always going to happen, the rest of the guest list came as a surprise — with former American Football player and seven-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady discussing the upcoming NFL game in Croke Park. While the joke has always been that the Late Late's guests are usually reserved for those hanging around the RTÉ canteen, they sometimes are able to pull it out of the bag — with people incredibly surprised that the GOAT ended up appearing in Donnybrook. Also on the Late Late was former NFL Quarterback Tom Brady — with people utterly baffled as to how RTÉ managed to pull off getting the GOAT on the show. Pic: Late Late Show/X 'We got Tom Brady on the Late Late before GTA 6,' one person joked on Twitter (X), while RTÉ's NFL correspondent Michael McQuaid wrote 'If you told me in 2019 that Dublin would have an NFL game in 2025 and Tom Brady would be on the Late Late show….' alongside a laughing emoji. Others joked that the quarterback will be appearing in other random locations nationwide, with FM104's Crossy tweeting 'what nightclub is Tom Brady opening this weekend.' The Late Late Show's season finale can be watched back on the RTÉ Player.
