Atlanta Drive GC defeated New York Golf Club 6-5 in the first match of the TGL Finals Series. Patrick Cantlay secured the winning point for Atlanta against Xander Schauffele on the final hole. The two teams will face off again on Tuesday for the second match of the series. The winner of the TGL Finals will receive a $9 million prize. PALM BEACH GARDENS — Atlanta Drive GC is one win away from the inaugural SoFi Cup and a $9 million-dollar grand prize. Atlanta defeated New York 6-5 on Monday night in the first match of the best-of-three TGL Finals Series at the SoFi Center. Patrick Cantlay secured the winning point against Xander Schauffele on the final singles hole after Schauffele's tying putt lipped out of the cup. It was a thrilling late night finish that creeped into Monday's final hour after a delayed broadcast start. "I think all of us are a little amped up right now but also ready to go to sleep," Atlanta's Justin Thomas said. Tied 2-2 after nine holes of triples, New York and Atlanta traded Hammer wins, first by New York's Cam Young and then by Atlanta's Billy Horschel, on the first two holes of singles. Horschel's win provided one of the night's most dramatic moments as he let out a roar and first pump toward a rowdy pro-New York crowd after burying an 11-foot putt. Both teams considered it a turning point in the post-match presser. "Cam did a lot of the dirty work to win us two points, which is a hard thing to do against them, and for us to give it right back, that's probably my biggest regret was accepting that hammer where Billy made that putt," Schauffele said. Young outscrambled Justin Thomas on hole No. 13 to restore New York's 5-4 advantage but Atlanta again recovered on No. 14 with a tremendous tee shot into a par-3 by Horschel. New York declined Atlanta's Hammer throw to send it to the final hole tied. Atlanta and New York will square off once again on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the second match of the TGL Finals Series. A third match will be played at 9 p.m. if necessary. More: Will Tiger Woods be at SoFi Center for TGL's Finals Series? Atlanta Drive beats New York Golf Club 6-5 in Match 1 of TGL championship finals
Atlanta Drive GC is one match away from the first TGL championship, taking Match 1 of the finals 6-5 over New York Golf Club on Monday. The match went to the 15th hole, with Patrick Cantlay making a birdie putt from six and a half feet out to force good friend but TGL foe Xander Schauffele into a make-or-lose putt. Schauffele's putt from 6 feet, 5 inches lipped out. Advertisement It was a back-and-forth match the whole way through, with Atlanta Drive winning the first two points in the nine-hole triples format only for New York to come back and tie it going into singles. NYGC's Cam Young threw down the hammer to get his team up 4-2 to start singles, but Atlanta Drive rallied. Here's what else you need to know from the TGL Finals: It has to be Billy Horschel. He is a showman who only needs his stage, and the SoFi Center is just that. The lifting of his hat to the crowd after hitting his golf ball off some rocks in the metaverse? Pouring in a critical 12-footer to tie the match in singles, and throwing it into the face of a handful of New York fans? This is a show, and Horschel understands the assignment. It was not nearly as theatrical, but he tied the match again on the 14th hole, spinning his ball to 5 feet on the par 3. And as Cantlay examined his match-winning putt, it was Horschel helping him read it the entire time. BILLLY!! — TGL (@TGL) March 25, 2025 ESPN's Marty Smith question to New York Golf Club's healthy scratch and 2022 U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzgerald: 'What is more nerve-wracking, watching these guys try to win a championship or winning a major championship?' Fitzpatrick's response? 'I'm feeling pretty sick right now, yeah.' The two teams will meet again on Tuesday night, for at least Match 2 and, if necessary, Match 3 in the best-of-three series. Match 2 will start at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. TGL has made little mention of the prize money throughout its first season — a conscious decision. 'As a fan of sports, I'm tired of hearing about money. So if I am, I'm sure every other fan is, too,' Mike McCarley, CEO of TMRW Sports Group, TGL's parent company, said before the start of the season. That said, the winning team will share $9 million, or $2.25 million per player — more than Viktor Hovland took home for claiming the Valspar Championship on Sunday. The losing team will share $4.5 million. (Photo of Billy Horschel of Atlanta Drive: Brennan Asplen / TGL via Getty Images)
