'The Righteous Gemstones' series finale: How does Danny McBride's show end, who dies and who survives?
It's the end of the era, one of the funniest TV shows in recent years has come to an end with the series finale of Danny McBride's The Righteous Gemstones. For four seasons Jesse (McBride), Judy (Edi Patterso), Kelvin (Adam Devine) and Eli Gemstone (John Goodman) have guided us through this satire of televangelists with great success, and now we have to say goodbye (until we start rewatching on Crave in Canada, Max in the U.S.). When it comes to sticking the landing, the final episode of the series finds that balance between the absurdity that we love with The Righteous Gemstones, and a sweetness we've always felt between these characters and this family. And now it's time for the show to go to TV heaven, otherwise known as living on streaming sites. SPOILERS FOR THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES SEASON 4, EPISODE 9 INCLUDED BEYOND THIS POINT We begin at The Cape and Pistol society, where Vance Simkins (Stephen Dorff) is clearly still upset about losing Top Christ Following Man to Kelvin. Vance comes in taunting Jesse by saying he's opening 10 mini-mall churches right next to Gemstone establishments. After years of this feud, Vance drops the yellow handkerchief, meaning that he's challenged Jesse to a pistol duel, with Eli volunteering to be his son's second. Vance gets the first shot in the duel but misses Jesse, hitting a car in the parking lot instead. While Jesse now has the advantage, he purposefully hits a sign behind Vance (that bounces and hits another Cape and Pistols member). But Jesse says he doesn't need the society to prove that he's an "impressive man," and he quits. Probably one of the most exciting revelations is between Kelvin and Keefe (Tony Cavalero). Keefe has renovated Kelvin's treehouse, and then Kelvin asks Keefe to marry him, and of course Keefe says yes. But that's not where the love story ends in this episode. When BJ (Tim Baltz) admits that he misses Dr. Watson, Judy organizes a visit for BJ to meet Dr. Watson's new companion, and Judy decides that they're going to keep the animal. While Baby Billy (Walton Goggins) had been prioritizing "Teenjus" instead of his family, as he's about to climb up on a cross for the show, he realizes his family should have been a priority and leaves the shoot. But love isn't in the air for Eli and Lori Milsap (Megan Mullally), they didn't get back together after Corey (Seann William Scott) killed his father, her ex-husband Cobb. But Lori shares with Eli that Corey isn't doing well after Cobb's death and it's also impacting his marriage to Jana (Arden Myrin). She also gives Eli a letter Aimee-Leigh (Jennifer Nettles) wrote to her after her divorce from Cobb, hoping that it lifts his spirits the same way it did for her. But the Milsaps and the Gemstones have been friends for a long time, which means they care about Corey, so both families get together again at the lake house. Corey brings back his Michael Jackson-inspired dance routine from their childhood to perform for the group, including the authentic jacket. Things take a turn when Corey says he's facing an "emergency" since his father died, telling the Gemstones he wants $7 million to buy his dad's gator park. Even though Lori says it's rude to request that, Corey stresses that he killed his father to save Eli. But Jana finally stands up for herself, saying she's tired of how rude Corey is to her, and she announces that she wants a divorce. After the blowup the Gemstone kids tell Corey they're all supporting him, except they won't give him $7 million. Then things start to get really outrageous. As Kelvin goes inside the lake house, he sees a figure that looks like his dead mother calling his name, and he follows her into Corey's room. That's where Kelvin sees that inside Corey's bag is a gun and Eli's gold bible, the one that was passed down through generations of Gemstones. And Corey's written his name on the list of owners. When Kelvin shows his siblings, Corey comes out and confirms that his father stole the bible when they were teenagers and there was the break-in at the Gemstone home. Corey reveals he also used to help his dad with the "ex-boyfriends club," whenever his mom would have a new boyfriend, and the father-son duo would "handle things." "At first dad would just fight them, and then things got worse and worse, " Corey says. "He even killed one guy." "Daddy was a monster. By the time we got to Big Dick Mitch, daddy made me a monster too." Then Corey goes on a tear, getting his gun and trying to shoot Jesse, Judy and Kelvin dead. First shooting Judy as the siblings walk through the doors of the lake house, and quickly playing "Red Red Wine" by UB40 through the lake house speakers as everyone else is out on the lake, masking the sounds of the gunshots. Kelvin makes it look like he's hiding under the bed, but he was actually behind a curtain, but wasn't fast enough to attack Corey, who shot him. Corey shot Jesse through a closet door, but before putting one more bullet in his head, Corey ran out of bullets. Jesse was able to crawl out into the hallway, as were Kelvin and Judy. Then Judy rings the bell for Dr. Watson to get Jesse's gun in his "everyday carry bag," and Jesse is able to get one shot at Corey in the head. While Jesse says they'll get Corey help, Corey just wants them to pray with him, similarly to what the wounded wanted from Elijah Gemstone in the season's first episode. "Sometimes we let jealousies corrupt us. Sometimes we don't think about how we act and how it affects others and we do things that we regret," Jesse says in his prayer. "We all fall off the path dear Lord, that is who we are. We are imperfect beings trying to become something more." "We are at your mercy dear Lord. And we hopefully ask you to guide Corey to your kingdom. He may not deserve it, but maybe he'll make a better angel than the was a man." While we face Corey's death, the Gemstones make it out alive and we get to see Kelvin and Keefe get married by Eli. As the whole family, and their friends, dance at the reception we hear a voiceover of Aimee-Leigh. It's the words she wrote in the letter to Lori after her divorce, which Lori gave to Eli. "Sometimes it's easier to never say goodbye and just leave things where they lay," we hear her say. "Sometimes thing happen and the life we knew is taken from us, just like that. It can happen fast." "When things change, it's easy to give into the darkness. When we hold on to pain too tight we lose the ability to grab the light. ... Even if years go by and we lose our way to each other, know I'll always be waiting, ready to share my love. I'm here whenever you need me. Please don't ever forget that." Then we see Eli crying as he reads Aimee-Leigh's letter, looking up at the portrait he has of the couple on the wall of his office. To end the show Eli is back in Florida, on a boat, and Lori shows up, making an unexpected visit. "I figured, you could maybe use a first mate. Someone to point you in the right direction when you get lost," Lori says. And that marks the end of The Righteous Gemstones, and despite all their wrongs, we still kind of want the best of this crazy family.

'The Righteous Gemstones' Season 4, Episode 8 recap: Deadly ending to penultimate episode of the show
We're so close to the end of The Righteous Gemstones and Sunday's episode certainly didn't disappoint. Coming off of last week's big win for Kelvin (Adam Devine), after being named Top Christ Following Man, our focus shift to some of the other Gemstone family members. BJ (Tim Baltz) and Judy (Edi Patterson) are still navigating life with service animal Dr. Watson, while Baby Billy Freeman (Walton Goggins) dives deeper into his show "Teenjus." And Eli (John Goodman) and Lori Milsap (Megan Mullally) are still in a rough patch after their fight. SPOILERS FOR THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES SEASON 4, EPISODE 8 INCLUDED BEYOND THIS POINT The episode begins with BJ, who has a surprise for Judy that he's been working on with Dr. Watson. Moving his feet to the ground, BJ is able to stand up from his wheelchair and take a few steps. "I am healed!" BJ declares. Even though this means Dr. Watson's work is coming to an end, BJ wants to keep him, but Judy can't stand him. At a family lunch the rest of the Gemstone family think that if Dr. Watson can smoke on command then they have to keep him, and he does. But when the monkey starts masturbating at the family lunch, Judy really wants Dr. Watson gone. However, it seems as though Dr. Watson has some thoughts about Judy as well. Later that night, when Judy is in the bathtub, Dr. Watson picks up a blowdryer, with Judy concerned he's trying to kill her, until he gets called downstairs by BJ. When Judy and BJ find out that Dr. Watson's had attachment issues after the loss of his mother, Judy seems to connect with the animal. But ultimately, they say goodbye to Dr. Watson. It's also Corey's birthday and despite what happened with his mom, he invited the Gemstones, who didn't show up. But Lori and his father Cobb (Michael Rooker) both attend. After being gifted an expensive knife, Corey tells his dad he doesn't want to talk about Eli, but Cobb gets upset and slaps his son. Then Cobb goes to confront Lori about her dating life, threatening to harm Eli. That prompts Lori to see Judy, Jesse and Kelvin, saying that she needs to speak to their dad, but he won't answer her calls. Trying to get them on her side, she starts telling them stories about their mom Aimee-Leigh and all the songs they wrote together, which wins them over. On to Baby Billy, "Teenjus" still seems to be his top priority, over spending time with his family, and doing a little cocaine throughout his days on set. A particular highlight of the episode is a "Teenjus" musical number, which features Eli in the background. Another Righteous Gemstones song that will be stuck in your head. But when Eli and Baby Billy lunch while on set for the show, they talk about how Eli is down in the dumps after his fight with Lori, which prompted him to (finally) cut his hair. Just as they head to Baby Billy's car, Cobb fire blow darts at them, getting them back to his gator park and locking them in a soundproof room, where Cobb is already hold Big Ditch Mitch, Lori's ex. When the police arrive to follow up on a call from Lori, Cobb takes them through the park without issue, until they're about to leave and Mitch, who managed to escape with Eli and Baby Billy, runs near the parking lot. Cobb ends up shooting the cops. When a physical fight between Eli and Cobb begins, Baby Billy offers a funny moment where runs towards them southing "Cocaine!" after taking the drug. But it's ultimately Corey who ends up stabbing his father in the back with knife he got for his birthday, pushing him into the water, and Eli uses the gator bell to call the animals over. The episode ends with the Gemstone family and Lori coming to the gator park to make sure their loved one are OK, with hugs all around for everyone.

'The Righteous Gemstones' Season 4, Episode 7 recap: Adam Devine's Kelvin Gemstone finally gets a big win
After last week's interlude episode, we're back to the present day in The Righteous Gemstones Season 4, Episode 7, continuing the drama between Kelvin Gemstone (Adam Devine) and Vance Simkins (Stephen Dorff) in the competition for Top Christ Following Man. While the relationship between Eli Gemstone (John Goodman) and Lori Milsap (Megan Mullally) hits a roadblock. Additionally, we check back in with BJ (Tim Baltz) and his service monkey Dr. Watson. And Baby Billy Freeman (Walton Goggins) keeps trying to get his show "Teenjus" off the ground. SPOILERS FOR THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES SEASON 4, EPISODE 7 INCLUDED BEYOND THIS POINT The episode begins with Lori showing up at Cobb's (Michael Rooker) home to confront him about terrorizing every man she dates, saying it's "sad" he can't just stay out of her life. But Cobb also gets an unexpected visit from Eli at his gator park. While Eli went with the intention of intimidating Cobb into leaving him and Lori alone, Cobb has some unexpected information. He shows Eli an ad for Lori's escort service in Pigeon Forge, Texas, and Cobb calls Eli her "latest meal ticket." When Eli confronts Lori about her escort service, she says Cobb faked the ad to try to embarrass her, and he's done it in the past. But Eli isn't completely buying her story, knowing that she's not the most secure financially at the moment, and we leave the couple in conflict. Meanwhile, Baby Billy is busy on set of his TV show "Teenjus," but he's having some trouble getting the performance he wants from his lead star. That's when he decides that he's going to play Teenjus himself, asking Judy (Edi Patterson) and Jesse for $2 million and cocaine to make the switch. But his Baby Billy's wife Tiffany is getting increasingly more upset that he doesn't spend enough time with his family, and she's worried about how much he's working. While Baby Billy's home life isn't exactly the happiest, BJ's spirits are up with Dr. Watson proving to be a big help. But they're getting quite close, frequently kissing on the lips, which makes Judy jealous. And Dr. Watson seems to have it out for Judy, including throwing fajita meat at her. Throughout the season Jesse (Danny McBride) has been upset that his son Gideon (Skyler Gisondo) hasn't seen him as a mentor figure, even though he's ultimately trying to follow in his footsteps. But Jesse's also trying to manage his son Pontius (Kelton DuMont), who still spends his days skateboarding outside the Gemstone Salvation Centre with his friends, and inhaling dust cleaner spray. This obviously doesn't make Jesse happy, who tells Pontius that he's frying his brain with drugs. Instead of firing back at his dad, Pontius takes a shot at Gideon, calling out his brother for being a "church boy" who's not even good at preaching. Not only does it upset Gideon, but Jesse as well, who's hoping that his sons will respect him. But then Amber recommends that Jesse shows Gideon how to be a good brother, by being a better brother to Kelvin. Kelvin has been hiding in his treehouse after the Top Christ Following Man roundtable discussion, where he couldn't battle against Vance's homophobic remarks. For Pontius and Gideon, the brothers come together after Gideon shows off his impressive skateboarding skills to Pontius and his friends. For Jesse and Kelvin, it's a bit more complicated. Judy and Jesse both go over the Kelvin's house to try to cheer him up, finding Keefe (Tony Cavalero), who tells them their brother has been in the treehouse for days, and has removed all means of climbing up. But Jesse has an idea to get to Kelvin, using the jet packs from the telethon in Episode 2. While Kelvin feels like a failure as a leader and a coward, Judy said he's a "mean coward," and Judy and Jesse ultimately convince Kelvin to show up for the final round of the Top Christ Following Man competition. Giving their final speeches, Vance talks about his parents dying in a plane crash and building an empire with his siblings. And Kelvin decides talks about truth and being seen as "different." "God sees the real me. In fact, he made the real me. And if the real me is good enough for God then it's good enough for everyone," Kelvin says on stage. "My name is Kelvin Gemstone and I'm a different kind of man. A beautiful man. A gay Top Christ Following Man. And if that's not good enough for this award, then I don't need it." When Kelvin finishes he speech, just walks off the stage, but then he finds out he actually won the competition. We love seeing a big win for Kelvin, making this a particularly satisfying episode for Righteous Gemstones fans.

'The Righteous Gemstones' Season 4, Episode 6 recap: Young Kelvin just wants his Tiger Beat magazines
With last week's episode of The Righteous Gemstones Season 4 ending with Lori Milsap (Megan Mullally) telling Eli Gemstone (John Goodman) that they have to talk about her ex-husband, this week we learn more about Cobb, played by Michael Rooker. And it's through another famous Righteous Gemstones interlude episode, where we go back to 2002. The Righteous Gemstones continues to prove that it does a flashback better than any other show. It moves the story forward, it's exciting, and Sunday night marked another great episode for Danny McBridge's series. SPOILERS FOR THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES SEASON 4, EPISODE 6 INCLUDED BEYOND THIS POINT Going back to 2002, we first see Eli and Aimee-Leigh (Jennifer Nettles) trying to get approval from Rogers County to expand their worship centre with a 10-acre parking lot. It's a plan that isn't sitting well with the community, wth protestor outside the municipal building who throw cream pies in their faces as they leave. But Eli has plans to take Aimee-Leigh to the lake house, Galilee Gulch, which will hopefully cheer them up, bringing Lori, her then husband Cobb and their son Corey (Sean Ryan Fox). Amber (Keely Marshall) is also at the lake house, because she's pregnant with her first child with Jesse (J. Gaven Wilde). Watching their husbands out on the water, Aimee-Leigh and Lori decide they should record another album together, and we get to see them write songs in Aimee-Leigh's home studio. While Judy is in the studio watching Lori and her mom, Kelvin (Tristan Borders) takes his unsupervised time to go into Judy's room, and take out a box hidden under her bed filled with Tiger Beat magazines, admiring pictures of stars like Hayden Christensen. But then Kelvin finds Judy's diary and reads an entry about a crush she has on a teacher, Judy walks into her room and catches him, chasing Kelvin out to his treehouse. After church the Gemstones, along with the Milsaps, have a meal at Jason's Steakhouse, where Jesse announces the name that will be given to his "bastard baby" with Amber will be Stallone Gemstone. An announcement met with sarcastic remarks from his family. But baby names aside, as the album writing for Aimee-Leigh and Lori continues, Lori says she really needs this record, sharing with her friend that her marriage to Cobb isn't going well, and she wants a divorce. Their arguments have gotten so bad that they have a fight in the driveway of the Gemstone home. When Cobb, who's clearly drunk, starts putting his hands on Lori, Eli comes out and hits him, but then Corey leaves with his dad to make sure he gets home safe. Visiting Cobb at the gator park he owns and operates, Eli apologizes for hitting him. Cobb says that while he has $1 million in the bank, Lori likes fancy, and that's just never going to be his style. When Eli offers for them to pray together, Cobb says he'd rather jump in the water with the gators, and says he never wants to see Eli's face again. But one night Eli, Aimee-Leigh and Lori go out for dinner, leaving their kids at the Gemstone home to entertain themselves with Monopoly and karaoke to "Kryptonite" by 3 Door Down. Then Amber has the idea for everyone to go out for tacos, while Kelvin wants to stay home to take a bubble bath and look at Tiger Beat magazines. Calling his son to find out he's not at the Gemstones' house, Cobb decides to rob the home, unaware that Kelvin stayed behind. Cobb breaks in, drinks Eli's bourbon and pees in the bottle. Cobb then smashes the glass case surrounding the gold-plated bible. Yes, it's the one Elijah Gemstone stole in 1862, in the season premiere. Kelvin is watching a masked Cobb, concealing his identity, break things around the house, and Kelvin eventually hides under his bed. When Eli, Aimee-Leigh and Lori come back to the house and see the damage, hbo Aimee-Leigh finds Kelvin still under his bed, who then sobs in her arms. While Eli and Aimee-Leigh talk to the police, Corey is sitting at the their dining room table. When Lori comes to check on him he lies and says that he saw his dad that night, that he had truck troubles and they gave him a boost. As the episode winds down, Jesse asks his dad if he thinks he'll ever divorce Aimee-Leigh, and Eli says that's never going to happen. Jesse says he wants things to be the same with Amber, and their baby Stallone. But then Eli says the strength Jesse wants for his son sounds like a Gideon, with Eli explaining he was "called upon by God to save the Israelites." "The Israelites wanted to make Gideon king, he turned them down. He said, 'There is no king but God,'" Eli tells his son. And that's how Jesse and Amber named their first son Gideon. As Cobb is at his home looking through the valuables he stole from the Gemstones, he opens the gold-plated bible, looks at a picture of Elijah, and sees all the signatures of the Gemstones that took possession of the bible after Abel Grieves and Elijah.
