How Kuwaiti label THUNA crafts a brand built on artisanal intergrity

Multi-brand footwear retailer, Level Shoes, welcomes a regional additional to its curated roster of designers: THUNA. Here, Altaf AlMudhayan and Sharifa AlSuleity, founders of Kuwaiti label THUNA talk about their brand which is built on artisanal integrity, authenticity, and resiliency. What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? Sharifa AlSuleity (SA): I'm an early bird, so my mornings start with a sense of purpose. I wake up before the world feels fully awake, make myself a cup of coffee, and take a few moments to reflect. It's my time to set the tone for the day, mentally run through my schedule, and sometimes jot down ideas that come to mind. Altaf AlMudhayan (AA): My mornings start with mindfulness. I wake up gently, savour a warm cup of tea, and take a moment to center myself before the day begins. I believe creativity flows best when we give ourselves the space to breathe, so I embrace a slow, intentional start rather than rushing into work. What was the catalyst that got the brand started? SA: THUNA was born from the belief that footwear should be more than just an accessory – it should be part of a woman's journey. Altaf and I have always shared a love for beautifully crafted shoes, and we realised there was a space for a brand that blends contemporary aesthetics with artisanal craftsmanship. We wanted to create pieces that feel personal, like a reflection of the wearer's story. AA: We were also inspired by the concept of duality – how two women, two perspectives, and two energies can come together to create something greater. That's what THUNA stands for, beyond just being a 'pair' of shoes – it's about balance, connection, and celebrating every step of the path we choose. What is the DNA of the brand that defines the THUNA aesthetic? SA: THUNA is all about contemporary elegance. We don't believe in overcomplicating things – our aesthetic is effortless, modern, and deeply rooted in craftsmanship. Every detail is intentional, from the materials we choose to the way each pair of shoes is constructed. AA: There's also an element of playful- ness and imagination. We love the idea of taking everyday moments and elevating them – whether it's through contrasting colours, unexpected textures, or surreal storytelling elements in our campaigns. We want THUNA to feel timeless yet fresh, something that women can make their own. What sparks the creative process and how do you go about designing the pieces in your collection? SA: Inspiration comes from everywhere – architecture, nature, art, even a fleeting moment on the street. We start with a feeling, a mood, and then build around that. Sometimes it begins with a silhouette, other times with a texture or detail that excites us. AA: We're both very hands-on when it comes to design. We work closely with skilled craftsmen to ensure that every piece embodies our vision. It's a balance of intuition and technical precision – crafting something that looks beautiful but also feels incredible to wear. The brand is now part of Level Shoes' impressive roster of footwear designers. How does it feel to achieve this and how do your values align with Level Shoes? SA: It's a milestone that we're incredibly proud of. Level Shoes represents a global standard for curation and innovation in footwear, so being part of that community is an honour. AA: What makes it even more special is that Level Shoes values individuality and craftsmanship, just like we do. Their approach to retail is about storytelling and experience, which aligns perfectly with our vision for THUNA. As a young, independent designer how do you navigate the global market and the increasing pressure in fashion? SA: It's definitely challenging, but we believe in staying true to our identity. The fashion industry moves fast, but we don't feel pressured to chase trends – we focus on creating pieces that feel authentic to us and our customers. AA: We also remind ourselves that growth takes time. We're building something meaningful, and that requires patience, resilience, and a willingness to adapt without losing sight of who we are. To you, what are your favourite pieces from the Ramadan collection available at Level Shoes? SA: I love the pieces that play with textures – there's a richness in the materials that makes them feel indulgent and celebratory, but still effortless. AA: Every piece in the collection holds a special place for us, but if I had to choose, I'd say the ones that showcase delicate embellishments. There's something magical about footwear that feels festive yet versatile enough to be worn beyond special occasions. What's one piece of advice for designers want- ing to start their own line? SA: Build with purpose. The industry is saturated, but there's always room for something that feels genuine and well-crafted. Take your time to refine your vision and don't rush the process. AA: Surround yourself with the right people. Whether it's a mentor, a business partner, or artisans who share your passion – having the right team makes all the difference. What is your vision for yourself as a designer and how would you like to develop your brand? SA: We see THUNA evolving beyond footwear into a full-fledged lifestyle brand. We want to create a universe where women feel inspired and empowered through everything we design. AA: And we want to keep storytelling at the heart of it all. The brand will grow, but our commitment to craftsmanship, imagination, and individuality will always stay the same. This is The Resilience Issue – how do you tap into resilience? SA: Resilience is about believing in your vision even when the path isn't clear. There will always be setbacks and challenges, but what matters is how you push through them. AA: For me, resilience is about trusting the process. Creativity isn't always linear, and neither is building a brand. There are highs and lows, but each step teaches us something valuable. It's about showing up every day and staying committed to the journey. – For more on luxury lifestyle, news, fashion and beauty follow Emirates Woman on Facebook and Instagram March's – The Resilience Issue – Download Now Images: Supplied
