American Medical Response team donates to T.J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A local animal shelter in Springfield has received a donation from American Medical Response to help with their adoptions. Wednesday was an exciting day for T.J. O'Connor and other animal shelters, as it was National Adopt-a-Shelter-Pet Day, so it was the perfect day for the AMR to make its donation. Baby eagles rescued after nest falls at Longmeadow wildlife refuge AMR told 22News that it all started this past winter with their road crews, which they said are all animal lovers. The crew decided to start a raffle to raise money for TJO. 'Our main interaction is with people, but we are with pets all of the time, dealing with the public, so it is great to be able to support them,' said Kim D'Angelo, Operations Manager of AMR. 'TJO is a great organization, and they support us on the road a lot, so it is great to give back to them.' While the crews raised the money and donations, AMR added on with treats, food, toys, and more. T.J. O'Connor cares for nearly 4,000 animals each year, mainly dogs and cats, but they say they occasionally get other types of critters as well. Thomas J. O'Connor Adoption Center celebrates devoted volunteers

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Thomas J. O'Connor animal control and adoption center in Springfield put a spotlight on the volunteers who have dedicated themselves to helping animals in need. The TJO staff was joined by Mayor Domenic Sarno to put on the appreciation party to celebrate their volunteers, and say 'thank you' for their efforts. TJO says thousands of animals go through their doors every year, and the volunteers go above and beyond to make sure they are loved and cared for. Interim Exec. Director Heather Cahillane told 22News, 'It's one of the most rewarding things that you can imagine. You see animals come in, sometimes at the worst part of their life—and you get to see them heal, bloom, and blossom—go to a new adoptive home— it's a pretty amazing feeling.' TJO is also in need of people to foster animals. Dog lost for a month saved from being stuck inside Western Mass. storm drain

A month after going missing, a dog was rescued from a Western Massachusetts storm drain where she had been trapped and unable to get free. The West Springfield Fire Department had been helping extinguish a car fire on Interstate 91 South Monday. The car was fully involved in flames. The fire also ruptured the gas tank, which spilled gasoline onto the roadway and was heading towards storm drains. The driver was taken to the hospital with burns and smoke inhalation. They are expected to survive. Once the car fire was extinguished, the firefighters began checking the nearby drains for any contaminants due to the spilled gasoline. However, firefighters discovered the dog instead. The dog, named Ally, was reported missing to Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center (TJO) officers over a month ago from the Forest Park area. 'How she managed to get inside of this storm drain located within close proximity to the highway is still unknown,' TJO wrote on Facebook. 'Had it not been for the quick thinking of the Mass State Police Officers along with the West Springfield Fire Department, who knows if Ally would have made it out of that drain alive.' Ally is safe and back in the hands of her very happy owners, TJO wrote, also sharing photos from them reuniting. Her owners are taking her to the vet to 'verify there are no underlying concerns from her month long ordeal.' Plus, TJO said, she'll be getting a bath and grooming. Thinking of adopting a dog?
