AM Best Affirms Credit Ratings of PT Asuransi Tokio Marine Indonesia
SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AM Best has affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of A- (Excellent) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of 'a-' (Excellent) of PT Asuransi Tokio Marine Indonesia (TMI) (Indonesia). The outlook of these Credit Ratings (ratings) is stable. The ratings reflect TMI's balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as strong, as well as its strong operating performance, limited business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management. In addition, the ratings factor in rating enhancement from Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd., which is the main insurance operating entity of Tokio Marine Holdings, Inc. (TMH). TMI's risk-adjusted capitalisation, as measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), was at the strongest level at year-end 2024, and is expected to remain at this level over the medium term. The company's capital adequacy is sensitive to its exposure to domestic (re)insurance counterparties of lower credit quality. Risk-adjusted capitalisation was impacted negatively in 2023 due to large reinsurance claims, but showed a recovery in 2024 supported by a timely reinsurance claims settlement. Notwithstanding the recent volatility in capital adequacy, the company has demonstrated a track record of strong internal capital generation, with average annual shareholders' equity growth of 9.4% over the past five years (2020-2024). In addition, TMI has a conservative investment portfolio composed of mainly government bonds, cash and deposits. AM Best assesses TMI's operating performance as strong, evidenced by a five-year average combined ratio of 84% and return-on-equity ratio of 18% (2020-2024). The company's underwriting performance remained robust in 2024 with a combined ratio of 82%, supported by favourable loss experience on its marine cargo, motor and fire class of business. In addition, TMI's investment returns from interest income is also a stable contributor to overall earnings. AM Best assesses TMI's business profile as limited. TMI is a small-sized, non-life insurer in Indonesia, with a domestic market share of 2%, as measured by 2024 gross premium written. AM Best views the company's portfolio to be diversified moderately by line of business with key lines including fire, marine and motor insurance, although with a geographic concentration in Indonesia. TMI benefits from preferential access to Japanese interest abroad (JIA) related risks in Indonesia given its affiliation and common branding with TMH. The company also has shown significant growth in non-JIA-related risks over time, particularly for marine cargo. Ratings are communicated to rated entities prior to publication. Unless stated otherwise, the ratings were not amended subsequent to that communication. This press release relates to Credit Ratings that have been published on AM Best's website. City of Tallahassee discusses FSU ownership of Tallahassee Memorial Hospital
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Tallahassee Memorial Hospital officials and the city of Tallahassee are at odds over ongoing talks of a new academic medical center. The upcoming Panama City Beach location could come within the feud's crosshairs. The Tallahassee Democrat reports that TMH leaders met with officials from the city and FSU on Saturday. After the meeting, Tallahassee's Director of Operations and Innovation wrote in an email to city officials that the parties agreed to transfer TMH's assets and properties to the FSU health brand. Hospital Attorney Murray Moore responded to the director, writing that the email 'misstates much of what occurred during that meeting.' Moore says the meeting was preliminary and that no commitments or terms of operation were agreed upon. The Democrat says this isn't the first time the city and the hospital have been at odds. Hutchison Beach Elementary earns 'Legacy School' recognition Last month, the hospital accused the city of holding secret meetings with FSU to take over the hospital after an item exploring a possible sale showed up on the city's agenda. That item was withdrawn this week. The Democrat reports that Tallahassee City Manager Reese Goad believes the future of the Panama City campus should come before the Tallahassee commission for a vote, but whether they have the authority over a project in another county is unclear. City officials told the Democrat that the Panama City campus is another reason that a sale of TMH to FSU could be necessary. We reached out to stakeholders in the project, but so far, we have not received a response. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. With ‘MenCan', TMH steps up on gender-inclusive oncology
Mumbai: Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), which has for long led efforts to provide cancer care to women and children in India, has launched MenCan, a comprehensive initiative focused exclusively on male cancer patients. The initiative marks a crucial step toward gender-inclusive oncology as it addresses prostate, testicular, and penile cancers, which are common among men. Male pelvic cancers are deeply stigmatised, and silence often leads to late-stage diagnosis. TMH alone sees around 1,100 prostate, 300 testicular, and 150 penile cancer cases annually. But nearly 80% prostate cancer patients are diagnosed in the advanced stages, which contrasts sharply with trends in developed countries, where 80% cases are detected early. 'In India, only 20–30% cases are diagnosed in the second stage. Most reach us when the cancer is far advanced,' said Dr Gagan Prakash, professor of surgical oncology at TMH. 'This is due to a mix of stigma, lack of awareness, and limited access to screening.' MenCan is TMC's answer to this crisis. The programme combines medical care with holistic support—focusing on early detection, counseling, fertility services, financial aid, and long-term rehabilitation through a survivorship clinic. It also works to normalise discussions around male health through public education and outreach. A key concern MenCan addresses is treatment dropout. 'Nearly 20–30% male patients discontinue treatment, primarily due to financial constraints,' said Dr Vedang Murthy, a core member of the initiative. 'Our goal is to ensure no one drops out because they can't afford care, or because they're too ashamed to ask for help.' The initiative includes a confidential helpline (8451009760) for guidance and emotional support, which links up patients with support groups, survivorship meetings, and counselling sessions. 'Our helpline ensures men don't have to face this battle alone,' said Dr Prakash. According to the Global Cancer Observatory 2022, India is expected to record 41,736 prostate, 4,640 testicular, and 11,264 penile cancer cases by 2025. Prostate cancer ranks 12th in India but is expected to climb as the elderly male population grows. The Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) estimates the 60+ demographic will nearly double, from 8.6% to 19.5% by 2050. Though rare, testicular cancer affects men between 14 and 44 years and has a 90% survival rate even in advanced stages. Penile cancer, despite being rare globally, sees the highest incidence in India. TMH's audit of 750 penile cancer cases revealed patients aged between 22 and 91 years. MenCan has roped in well-known singer Shaan as brand ambassador. It has also developed a campus navigation app for TMH's 60-acre ACTREC campus to help first-time visitors. 'MenCan is not just about treating cancer—it's about restoring dignity, breaking silence, and making sure every man gets the care he deserves,' said Dr Prakash. The initiative is likely to be expanded across all Tata Memorial Centres in India, he added.

All injured FSU students except one soon to be released from Tallahassee hospital
A spokesperson for Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare said he anticipates two more Florida State University shooting victims to be discharged Monday, April 21. Greg Salyer told the Tallahassee Democrat three of the shooting victims already have been released; the final patient remains in the hospital in good condition. Generally, that means there are no immediate medical concerns and the overall prognosis is positive. Doctors at TMH held a press conference April 18, a day after the shooting, where they provided updates on the victims' health. FSU victim speaks from hospital bed... 'I just need to play dead': Florida State University student on surviving campus shooting Dr. Brett Howard, a trauma surgeon, said six victims were treated for gunshot wounds to their extremities, to the torso and even the face. "These folks are definitely very fortunate," he said at the press conference. Three of the six patients needed surgery and were in the operating room within an hour of arriving at the hospital. One person needed facial surgery. None were treated for non-gunshot wounds. Florida State University shooting: 3 victims released, classes resumed, what we know Monday As the only Level II Trauma Center in the region, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare remains ready to respond to an emergency on a moment's notice. Our colleagues, physicians, and first responders train for situations like this, hoping our training is never needed. We are incredibly proud of the response from our teams on April 17 and are honored to be the hospital chosen to provide such a level of care. Our commitment to our community remains steadfast, and our hearts are with the students, faculty, and staff at Florida State University and the many families affected by this tragedy. As of the morning of April 21, we are pleased to share that three patients in total have been discharged, and we anticipate two more being discharged today. The remaining sixth patient is in good condition. Arianna Otero is the trending and breaking news reporter for the Tallahassee Democrat. Citizens gun rights during local state of emergency would be restored under bill passed by House
A customer tries out a semi-automatic pistol at The Gun Store on Nov. 14, 2008, in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by) Update: A Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare representative said staff were caring for an undisclosed number of casualties. 'TMH is actively receiving and caring for patients related to an incident that has occurred at Florida State University. At this time, details are still unfolding, and we do not yet have specific information to share. However, we want to assure the community that our teams are fully mobilized and prepared to provide the highest level of care and support to all those affected,' a written statement says. 'We remain in close coordination with emergency responders and public safety officials. Out of respect for patient privacy and to ensure accurate information, we will provide updates as soon as they are available. We ask for your patience and compassion during this difficult time.' The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, meanwhile, posted on X that its officers were on the scene and would issue an update 'with more information as soon as possible.' === A proposal that would prohibit local governments from suspending the sale of guns and ammunition during a declared state of emergency was approved in the Florida House on Wednesday. The measure (HB 6025) sponsored by Brevard County Republicans Monique Miller and Debbie Mayfield, repeals current state law that prohibits the sale of firearms and ammunition during a local state of emergency. The bill would also repeal the prohibition banning anyone intentionally possessing a firearm in a public place during a local emergency. South Florida Democratic Rep. Mike Gottlieb said that he had voted for the bill in an earlier committee meeting, but that upon reading the actual state statute that it would repeal (section 870.044) was now opposing it. 'What we're saying is that if there's a riot or public disturbance we're just going to let everybody sort of willy-nilly, without the controls that we have in place, get their firearms, and that's adding fuel to that riot,' he said. 'That's adding fuel to that fire.' Gottlieb added that he believed it had 'wide-ranging implications that could endanger us in society.' But Republicans said it was more than an appropriate change. 'When our communities are ripped by unrest or emergency, when the lights go out and the sirens grow louder and the sense of order is fading, that is precisely the moment when Floridians deserve the freedom to defend themselves, their children, their homes and their livelihoods,' said Seminole County Republican Rachel Plakon. 'When I came up here I promised my constituents that one of the most important things that I would do is I would fine laws that violate their constitutional rights, and I would get rid of them,' said Miller. 'This is one of the most egregious that I found.' The measure passed 86-28, mostly along party lines. The Senate version (SB 952) sponsored by Hernando County Republican Blaise Ingoglia has passed all of its committees and is awaiting a floor vote in that chamber.
