Willie Geist on the Moment it Hit Him That Daughter Lucie is Leaving for College

Family life is about to change for Sunday TODAY host Willie Geist: his oldest child, Lucie, will be leaving for college late this summer. 'We just had a high school graduation a few days ago for Lucie Geist,' Willie told TODAY anchors (and dads!) Craig Melvin, Al Roker, Carson Daly and Peter Alexander at a TODAY Father's Day celebration. 'All the best stuff is still coming,' Willie said. At the same time, he isn't sure what life will be like when Lucie moves away. Willie, his wife, Christina, and their 15-year-old son, George, will have to figure out how to recalibrate living in their home as a family of three most of the time. 'We feel like we've done the best we can. She's a great kid, and so we're thrilled for her,' Willie said. 'But we're a family of four. Somebody's taken a tire off the car and you've got to figure out how to drive the car on three wheels, you know?' Peter Alexander reminded Willie of how wonderful it can be to begin a whole new phase of your parental relationship with the younger child. 'I don't know how he feels about that, but we're excited about it,' Willie joked about George. Willie and Christina have been struggling with the fact that Lucie is not going to be living nearby — she's moving several hours away. For now, the couple can track Lucie's whereabouts on an app, but they plan to sign off while she's at school, noting that seeing her location at all times might be more troubling than reassuring. 'Look,' said Al Roker. 'I think it's one of those things where at a certain point you've got to give it up to God, you know? You've done what you can. And you're just there to catch them.' Willie also spoke about Lucie's milestone when he co-hosted TODAY With Jenna & Friends on June 10. 'As any parent who has been through this — or maybe you're going through it right now — knows, the excitement at times becomes terror,' he shared. 'The graduation week, there are parties and things at school. You're kind of busy ... and then all of the sudden you're sitting there and you're looking up at that stage and go, 'Oh, that's her! That's Lucie. That's my daughter walking across and shaking the hand of the principal and getting the diploma,'' Willie told Jenna. 'She was on stage speaking, which was an amazing thrill, and I think that's when it really hit me and Christina,' he added. 'All of a sudden, she's ready to go,' he said. 'And you hope you've instilled in her all the values and the habits and the things she'll need to go out in the world.' This article was originally published on

Erin Andrews Lands Cool TV Job Outside of the NFL

Erin Andrews won't be reporting on football games for a few more months, but she's keeping busy in the television game. Andrews is part of FOX's top NFL broadcasting crew, but starting Monday, you can catch her on NBC in the mornings. This weekend, TODAY With Jenna & Friends announced that Andrews will be guest co-host for the week of May 12. "We can't wait to spend the week with you," the show's official account said in an Instagram post. "Guuuuuuuuys!!!! It's gonna be a time!!!!!" Andrews acknowledged in the comments. TODAY With Jenna & Friends is hosted by Jenna Bush Hager, the daughter of former president George W. Bush. Comedian and actor Matt Rogers was last week's guest host, and other recent guest hosts include actor Ken Jeong, comedian Wanda Sykes and actress Tina Fey. Andrews has worked for FOX for more than a decade after making the leap from ESPN. Her contract with the network expired after the Super Bowl, but there are indications she'll be back in the fold this fall. "I think my goal is always kind of the same as last year," Andrews said last September. "Enjoy it, because it's not going to last forever, especially when your contract is up — and mine is." During an episode of her "Calm Down" podcast with Charissa Thompson in March, Andrews made reference to longtime colleague Jimmy Johnson returning to make guest appearances after he announced his retirement. Alert listeners took note of the way Andrews referred to Johnson--saying that his retirement "won't feel real until we kick off the season"--and deduced that the 47-year-old journalist was planning to be back on the job with FOX in September. Andrews is the network's top sideline reporter, working with No. 1 play-by-play man Kevin Burkhardt and game analyst Tom Brady.

Katy Perry hits back at criticism over space flight and Lifetimes tour

Katy Perry wrote a long response to a fan-made ad congratulating her for finishing the first week of her Lifetimes tour, amid backlash about the tour and her recent trip to space. Perry responded to a video of the ad posted to a fan account on Instagram, writing in a comment that she is able to remain true to herself, 'heart open and honest', because of the bond she has with her fans. 'Please know I am ok, I have done a lot work around knowing who I am, what is real and what is important to me,' she said. 'My therapist said something years ago that has been a game changer, 'No one can make you believe something about yourself that you don't already believe about yourself,' and if I ever do have any feelings about it then it's an opportunity to investigate the feeling underneath it. 'When the 'online' world tries to make me a human Piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed,' she continued. Perry said that what is real to her is seeing her fans in the crowd every night, 'singing in unison, reading your notes, feeling your warmth'. 'I find people to lock eyes and sing with and I know we are healing each other in a small way when I get to do that,' she said, adding an infinity emoji. 'I'm not perfect, and I actually have omitted that word from my vocabulary, I'm on a human journey playing the game of life with an audience of many and sometimes I fall but… I get back up and go on and continue to play the game and somehow through my battered and bruised adventure I keep looking to the light and in that light a new level UNLOCKS,' she added. Perry's comment came after her Lifetimes tour began on April 23 in Mexico City. The singer has since faced criticism for the show's choreography and stage design from social media users online. Earlier this month, Perry was also part of the all-female flight crew that took a roughly 10-minute trip to space aboard a Blue Origin spacecraft. The flight quickly garnered controversy, as everyday people, fast-food companies and celebrities, like Olivia Munn and Emily Ratajkowski, questioned the sustainability of a trip to space. 'What's the point?' Munn said while co-hosting TODAY With Jenna & Friends on April 3. 'Is it historic that you guys are going on a ride? I think it's a bit gluttonous. ... Space exploration was to further our knowledge and to help mankind. What are they going to do up there that has made it better for us down here?' Perry did not directly respond to the criticism of the flight, but several of her fellow crew members like Lauren Sanchez, Gayle King and Aisha Bowe did during a press conference on April 14. 'I'm not going to let you steal our joy, but most people are really excited and cheering us on and realize what this mission means to young women, young girls and boys, too,' King said. 'I feel anybody that's criticizing doesn't really understand what is happening here,' she added, later in the press conference. 'I've heard it, we've all heard it and we were even all talking about that, and I hope that they will do a deep dive into what this represents.' Sanchez, the fiancée of Blue Origin and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, also shared her perspective. 'I get really fired up a little bit on this,' Sanchez said. 'I would love to have them come to Blue Origin and see the thousands of employees that don't just work here but they put their heart and soul into this vehicle. ... They love their work and they love the mission and it's a big deal for them.' 'So when we hear comments like that, I just say, 'Trust me. Come with me. I'll show you what this is about, and it's really eye-opening,'' she continued.

Gayle King reveals what Oprah Winfrey told her when she returned from Blue Origin space flight

Oprah Winfrey was in tears watching her longtime friend Gayle King launch into space as part of a recent all-female Blue Origin expedition. But it wasn't because she feared for King's safety. "When people saw her crying, people said, 'Oh, she's so worried. She thinks something's gonna happen," the CBS Mornings cohost, 70, recently told E! News. But "that wasn't it at all," King explained. "She was crying because she knew what it took for me to do that, and so when I came [back] she was saying, 'I'm so proud of you. You did that, and I'm so proud of you,'" she continued, remembering, "She was so welled up." Blue Origin, an aerospace company founded in 2000 by Jeff Bezos, has now completed 11 crewed flights that have crossed the Kármán line, conventionally regarded as the border between Earth's atmosphere and outer space. King's flight also included Katy Perry and Bezos' fiancée, Lauren Sánchez. Past flights have included celebrities like Michael Strahan and William Shatner. While the only crashes on record for Blue Origin occurred with uncrewed flights, fans voiced their concern for King, Perry, and the rest of the crew's safety ahead of the April 14 flight. But King was able to rest easy, because Winfrey was able to rest easy. "She always said I was gonna be okay," the broadcaster noted, adding, "and Oprah knows things.' The all-female Blue Origin expedition courted a good deal of controversy, to the surprise of its participants. Celebrities from Olivia Wilde to Jessica Chastain criticized the expedition for a number of reasons, from the exorbitant cost to the apparent referendum on contemporary feminism that it provoked. "Billion dollars bought some good memes I guess," Wilde wrote on her Instagram Story the day of the launch. Olivia Munn elaborated further on her distaste for the expedition, saying during an appearance on TODAY With Jenna & Friends, "I know this is probably not the cool thing to say, but there are so many other things that are so important in the world right now... What are you guys gonna do up in space? What are you doing up there?" Chastain shared an opinion piece published in The Guardian to her X account on April 17 bearing the headline, "The Blue Origin flight showcased the utter defeat of American feminism." King defended the expedition, saying that Blue Origin's goal is not rooted in vanity or wastefulness, but "to figure out a way to harness the waste here and figure out a way to put it in space, to make the planet Earth a better place."
