How a vaccine for kids could help slow the spread of a sexually-transmitted disease
How a vaccine for kids could help slow the spread of a sexually-transmitted disease Team TOI Plus TNN Updated: Aug 12, 2025, 18:11 IST IST Despite there being no licensed vaccine for the prevention of gonorrhea, the United Kingdom has become the first to give another vaccine to try and slow the disease's worrying spread. Gonorrhea has been known by many names over the centuries and in English was referred to as 'the clap'. However, despite the bacterial disease being treatable by antibiotics, a rise in the number of cases and drug-resistant variants, has prompted the use of a vaccine originally created for children to try to slow the spread of the disease. The UK has become the first nation in the world to roll out a vaccination programme against the disease. The vaccination programme is intended to prevent the spread of the disease - which has seen a worrying rise - in the hope of reducing pressure on healthcare services.

How India's trying to squeeze Turkiye, Azerbaijan from trade to travel Team TOI Plus TNN Updated: May 15, 2025, 18:32 IST In the days following Operation Sindoor, the calls to boycott ties with Turkiye and Azerbaijan have received support from various sectors in India. Indian travel firms led the way as multiple businesses and institutions across the country declared they would boycott trade and ties with Turkiye and Azerbaijan over the two countries openly backing Pakistan after Operation Sindoor. Indian defence officials had revealed Turkey-made drones were used by Pakistan to attempt to attack Indian defence and civilian installations. The call to boycott the two nations came just days after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire after days of hostilities following Operation Sindoor. Why Virat Kohli walked away and the challenges it presents for Indian Test cricket Team TOI Plus TNN May 13, 2025, 16:25 IST The cricket board had hoped to get the star batsman to extend his career by a few more tours, but Kohli was clear that he didn't feel right about continuing. Over the course of multiple peaks and troughs, and through thousands of cricketing battles during a turbulent 14-year Test career, Virat Kohli usually stuck to his guns. So it was with his retirement, as he resisted requests to pad up for one more series in England, foregoing the temptation of a farewell Test. A fortnight after he first expressed his desire to retire from the longest format to chief selector Ajit Agarkar, Kohli brought the curtains down on a stellar career spanning 123 Tests , in which he scored 9,230 runs and 30 tons.
