Japan's NYK Line moves forward with sea-based rocket recovery plan

(NYK Line) TOMONORI WASHIDA TOKYO -- Japanese shipping company NYK Line has obtained an industry body's approval for a proposed water-based recovery system for rockets, aiming to spend the next two years working on technical designs before conducting field testing in fiscal 2028. The company, officially known as Nippon Yusen, met with parties including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which is handling the rocket technology side of the project, to discuss using ships for soft landings at sea.

The Japanese shipping company, also known as NYK Line, hopes to diversify its revenue sources as maritime transportation is highly sensitive to changes in the global economy.

(Photo by Tomonori Washida) TOMONORI WASHIDA TOKYO -- Container shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE) unveiled a Japan-built ship on Tuesday, one of 15 vessels it plans to launch in the next two years as it looks to mitigate risks from ongoing U.S.-China tensions. "We like to think we are an international company, truly a global international company," said CEO Jeremy Nixon at the christening of a ship at an Imabari Shipbuilding plant in Mihara, Hiroshima prefecture, on Tuesday. "I'm very pleased to say that this was the first set of ships that we built, which are owned by ONE."
