Penang Woman Buys Cat In Songkhla, Claims Customs Let It Through Because 'Tak Salah'
Subscribe to our FREE A Malaysian woman posted on social media about her recent family trip to Thailand, and how they came across a tent selling pets at Samila Beach in Songkhla. According to her post on Threads, she and her husband spent 4,500 baht (RM580) to buy a Persian cat for their child at the pet sale and managed to bring the feline back to Penang with no trouble from border authorities at all. 'We thought we were just going to have a look, then (our child) hugged the cat and didn't want to let go, so we bought a two-month-old Persian cat and now we've arrived safely in Penang. 'Do you think it was worth it buying this cat? We've taken care of it for two weeks now and it's so clever,' she said in the caption. Some were suspicious because the cat their child hugged was different from the cat they brought home A few users on Threads were questioning, from photos, why the cat that the couple's child was holding was different from the cat they brought back to Penang. It was later explained that she bought a different cat from the one her daughter was holding. She then emphasised that she really did buy the cat from Songkhla and was not lying about bringing the animal back from Thailand. The seller allegedly told her that the cat can be brought back to Malaysia with no issues Some folks asked her how she managed to pass border control when transporting the cat back to Malaysia. She told the other users that she had asked the seller prior to purchasing the feline 'Can we bring the cat back to Malaysia? What do we do at the border?'. She then claimed that the seller said it wouldn't be a problem because a cat is not like other animals that require a licence to purchase. When they reached the border, she claimed that customs officers checked their entire car and let them through back into Malaysia. 'When we reached the border, customs checked our entire car and they were okay. If we weren't allowed to bring it back, we wouldn't. But the seller said it was okay and not wrong to do so,' she said. Imported animals need to be quarantined before entering Malaysia One user on Threads asked about the family's experience at the border when they brought the cat through, and stated that cats being imported into the country would usually be quarantined by the Department of Quarantine and Inspection Services Malaysia (MAQIS). Meanwhile, another individual threatened to report the family to MAQIS for bringing an animal from another country into Malaysia without quarantine, reminding them about rules to prevent diseases from spreading. TRP reached out to MAQIS to ask them about the procedure for bringing in animals from other countries, including Thailand. A spokesperson said on the phone 'According to procedure, even a tiny plant will be confiscated. What more a live cat'. Additionally, an email response from MAQIS included documents on official terms for importing pets (cats and dogs). It explained that the conditions are important in ensuring the safety of Malaysia's biosecurity. In the document, MAQIS highlighted the import permit section which states that the animal must be accompanied by a pet passport or certificate containing a full description or identification. A list of conditions are also required under the Veterinary Certification, while the Quarantine Requirement section states that the animal being imported must undergo a compulsory quarantine period of not less than 14 days. Meanwhile, the guideline for importing pets published on MAQIS' website states nine rules before an animal such as a cat or dog can be brought past the border. Among the rules stated in the guideline include the animal cannot be below three months of age, must have a microship implanted, and is compulsory to undergo quarantine as soon as it reaches Malaysia. Image: After reading the official MAQIS guidelines, it's clear that both the cat seller and the person who brought the cat back to Malaysia is spreading misinformation (intentionally or not) about the country's animal or pet import procedures. 'Malaysia's Rod Stewart' Vernon Steele Breathes His Last At PPUM
Subscribe to our FREE Once dubbed the 'Rod Stewart of Malaysia', musician Vernon Richard Steele passed away this morning due to breathing difficulties at the University Malaya Medical Centre in Petaling Jaya. He was 73. Steele's health had been on the decline since last year when he was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which is a common lung disease that causes restricted airflow and breathing problems. He was recovering from the COPD, however Steele then had complications which led to his right leg being amputated. He has been in and out of the hospital since, having undergone two surgeries. In a 2009 article by The Star, Steele's voice was described as deep, husky and effortless. READ MORE: At the time, he had already been singing for over three decades and as recent as last year, he was still actively performing, making his involvement in the music scene well over four decades, hitting five. It all changed after his COPD diagnosis, which was later followed with an amputation of one of his legs. Among those who had tirelessly been helping to raise funds to aid in Vernon's recovery was the Musicians For Musicians association. Taking to Facebook, the association's secretary Latifah Abdullah shared the news of Steele's passing. 'We tried, Vernon, we tried. Hoped you'd stay on for the Benefit. One of the best male vocalist in town. Go in peace, no more pain. May you rest in peace now,' Latifah wrote. The benefit she mentioned is one scheduled for next month titled 'Giving Through Music'. It is aimed at raising funds to support the many musicians who are in need, require medical aid, hospitalisation, and facing age-related issues. Speaking to TRP, Latifah said the whole thing is very sad. 'It's very unfortunate that he couldn't stay for us to finish the coming benefit concert. It is actually for all the musicians who are chronically ill. And it's very sad. He knows about it. 'But in any case the next of kins will not be left out. 'We are gonna miss him and he is one of a kind, he has one of the best vocals in town, we would say as the Rod Steward of Malaysia. We will miss him dearly,' she said. READ MORE: Messages of condolences on Steele's passing are also being shared on Facebook, particularly by his friends and those who have had the honour of performing with him throughout his career. Steele leaves behind a son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren. Motorcyclist Crashes After Getting Seizure, Lifeguard Jumps To The Rescue
Subscribe to our FREE Not all traffic accidents are caused by reckless drivers and road rage. Sometimes, they happen due to a person experiencing health issues while driving a car or riding a motorcycle. In a dashcam footage that went viral recently, a motorcyclist could be seen veering off to the side of the road and hitting a highway divider when he experienced a seizure while riding, twitching on the ground after the crash. Underwater hockey player and lifeguard Manigandaa Keertan, who shared the video on Instagram, was seen next to the victim, trying to keep him calm and secure while his partner Maddie called an ambulance and relayed accurate information to emergency services. Staying calm is important while assisting someone experiencing a seizure In his post, Manigandaa emphasised that it is important to stay calm when someone is going through an episode. He then listed things that people should know when dealing with a person experiencing a seizure: Stay calm and keep the person safe. Don't hold them down or try to stop the movements. Don't try to open their mouth. Protect their head and time the seizure. Turn them on their side after the seizure ends. Call for help if it lasts for more than 5 minutes. He then advised what not to do in this situation: Don't put anything in their mouth. Don't try to force their jaw open. Having the right skills and knowledge can help in emergency situations until professional help arrives TRP reached out to Manigandaa, who said the incident occurred along Jalan Lapangan Terbang Subang, just opposite the Subang Airport. When asked if his lifeguard skills came into play while assisting the crash victim, Manigandaa said it definitely did. He runs a lifeguard company called 'We have trained for these kinds of scenarios so I would definitely say it helped a lot,' he said. 'I think that this is a skill everyone should learn and be brave enough to help others. People always have the fear of making someone's condition worse. But, if a person is not breathing, they are already in their worst state so there's no harm in trying to help,' Manigandaa added. Manigandaa's story shows how valuable it is to learn some basic medical skills for emergencies. How many of us can say that we know what to do when someone needs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), or recognise signs of someone having a stroke, or how to help someone having an asthma attack? Now that's something to think about. Share your thoughts with us via TRP's . Get more stories like this to your inbox by signing up for our newsletter.
