Beyond the cockpit: Aviation offers thrilling career paths
1 2 3 Hyderabad: For generations, the image of aviation has been synonymous with pilots in crisp uniforms and air hostesses gliding down aircraft aisles. But it's no longer just about flying planes, the aviation industry is opening up a runway of opportunities for students in Hyderabad—and many are boarding early. From aerodynamics and designing aircraft, to air traffic control, aircraft maintenance and drone technology, there is something for everyone in the sky. Industry experts say that for those just out of Class 12, there's never been a better time to chart a flight plan into this dynamic field. Physics, Chem and Math crucial The journey begins in Class 11, where aspiring aviation professionals are advised to choose Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. "These are the core subjects required to appear for most aviation-related entrance exams and degree programs," said Swetha Agarwal, a career counsellor with 15 years of experience. "After Class 12, students can aim for degrees like BTech or BE in Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering, BSc in Aviation or Aeronautics, or even a specialised Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) course. Admission depends on entrance tests—JEE Main, JEE Advanced (for IITs), state CETs like TS EAMCET, while private universities have their own entrance exams," she added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thousands Are Saving Money Using This Wall Plug elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Click Here Undo For students opting for aeronautical or aerospace engineering, the college journey begins with a strong focus on core subjects like aerodynamics, propulsion systems, aircraft structures, avionics, flight mechanics, and materials science. "These courses don't just teach theory—they're designed to prepare students to work on real aircraft and space systems. There are also specialisations like UAV (drone) technology, aerospace electronics, and sustainable aviation solutions," said Suresh Ukrand, senior academic in aeronautics for the last 37 years. Internship way to placements Experts further shared how, in Hyderabad, students can benefit from being at the heart of one of India's most active aviation clusters. "Students can also intern at places like GMR Aero Technic, DRDO labs, and private MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) facilities," said professor S S Rao, principal of an engineering college in the city, which offers aeronautical engineering. "They get hands-on exposure to aircraft maintenance, flight simulations, avionics testing, and even drone research," he said, adding that internships are not just resume builders—they often lead directly to placements. According to the data from GMR Aviation Academy, by 2026, it is estimated that scheduled airlines, general aviation operators, Flight Training Organisations (FTOs)/Flying Clubs (FCs), and Approved Maintenance Organisations (AMOs) will require approximately 3,500 Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) and 9,000 technicians. Opportunities after graduation "The job roles available after graduation are more diverse than ever. While core placements include positions like aeronautical engineer, maintenance engineer, design engineer, and flight test analyst, new-age profiles in AI-driven aircraft systems, drone fleet operations, aviation analytics, and sustainable fuel research are fast gaining traction," said V S K Reddy, vice chancellor, Malla Reddy University, adding some students also opt for roles in airline operations, aviation safety, or even airport planning. According to Ashok Gopinath, president, GMR Aero Techic shared that as a constantly growing business, GMR Aero Technic has established a centre of excellence for Aircraft Maintenance Engineering in Hyderabad. This institution offers parallel AME licensing pathways under both DGCA and EASA (globally accredited aviation training programs), making it the first school in India owned and operated by an MRO. "Specialised programs include Airport Operations, Airline safety and regulatory training, compliance with hazardous material transportation, firefighter Training ACI & ICAO Programs, Industry-aligned aviation standards, cybersecurity training – Digital safety in aviation and many more," Gopinath added. Salary expectations According to the experts, fresh graduates typically start at Rs 5 to Rs 7 lakh per annum in core roles, though those entering specialised sectors or MNCs with design centres in Hyderabad can earn more. "In three years, if they upskill and work on global projects, students can easily move into the Rs 12 to Rs 15 lakh range, especially in design, data science, or project management roles," said career counsellor Swetha Agarwal.
