Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited to build skywalk at Banashankari junction for Rs 50 crore
Bengaluru: Eight years after braving heavy traffic to access Metro station along the Green Line at Banashankari, commuters can now heave a sigh of relief. The reason: Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has floated a tender to build a skywalk from the station to TTMC building that houses a BMTC bus stand. The Banashankari junction along Kanakapura Road is a staggered junction and one of the busiest in the city. The Metro station and TTMC building separated by the heavily trafficked Subramanyapura Road and a part of Banashankari temple premises, making it challenging to access both. There is also a busy vegetable and fruit market between bus stand and Metro station. The selected contractor must complete the project within 15 months. They will be responsible for maintenance after construction and relocating trees and electrical lines," said a senior BMRCL official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! The existing junction will also be redesigned with designated areas for planting trees and installing traffic signals," the official said. A senior BBMP official added, "This skywalk will offer a unique experience through green spaces and resting spots, including benches along the walkway. It will simulate the feel of walking on a street at ground level, enhancing the pedestrian experience." However, several regular commuters of the junction hope the skywalk will be completed in time and have required features like elevators. A skywalk at the junction was first proposed in 2019. However, the project got delayed. The proposal resurfaced in 2022, and both BMRCL and BBMP jointly decided to go ahead with the construction but it again halted. In the recent state budget, Rs 50 crore was earmarked for the project. quotes Veeresh Belur, resident of Vijayanagar: "Skywalks are only useful if they come with functional lifts. Over time, most lifts stop working. While these projects are developed under the PPP model, they seem to serve more as advertising platforms than pedestrian infrastructure. What we really need is a more pedestrian-friendly approach at the ground level." Gopal Ratnam, resident of Banashankari: "This has been long overdue. I use this stretch frequently—dropping my son to college or catching a bus—and it's nightmare for pedestrians. We've raised the issue several times, but the traffic police couldn't find a lasting solution. Hopefully, this project helps. But more importantly, it must be completed within a reasonable time—not in 15 years, at least in two. Pedestrian safety and convenience should be the top priority." Arti N Hanagodu, resident of Banashankari II Stage: "Do people actually use these skywalks? They're uncomfortable, especially for anyone above 50. Even young people avoid them and prefer crossing the junction directly. The ones in Jayanagar, they're mostly deserted. It's too much hassle and frankly, these skywalks often feel like a waste of public funds."
