Steve Bruce new host and producer of Mainstreet P.E.I.
Steve Bruce is the new host and producer of Mainstreet P.E.I. beginning March 31. "I'm honoured to join the Mainstreet team, and to have this opportunity to produce and host the show. I became a journalist because I genuinely love talking to people and hearing their thoughts and stories," Steve says. "Mainstreet provides such a great platform to connect with Islanders — particularly those that aren't necessarily making news headlines, but are interesting people doing wonderful things in their communities and achieving things that should be celebrated." Steve has been with CBC P.E.I. since 2009 and has held a number of roles in addition to his work as a video-journalist. He has stepped in as executive producer, TV host, line-up producer and radio host. He has won several awards throughout his career including a RTDNA Regional Adrienne Clarkson Diversity Award (2013), an Atlantic Journalism Award Gold - Breaking TV News (2014) and most recently Atlantic Journalism Award Silver - Video Feature (2024). Outside of journalism, Steve is a singer and piano player and has performed in musical theatre productions like Beauty and the Beast, Jesus Christ Superstar, Little Shop of Horrors, and Into the Woods. He is looking forward to sharing his love of music on Mainstreet, which has always been such a great venue to promote Island artists, writers and musicians in particular, and that won't change. "I'm a big fan of the arts, and have so much respect for those that help P.E.I.'s arts community thrive," he says. Born in Corner Brook, N.L., Steve received a journalism degree at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, N.B. Steve and his wife Kady are busy parents with three young children. He enjoys sports and coaches kids' baseball and occasionally gets a chance to sneak away to pursue his passion for playing squash.
