A Brief History of the ‘Galaxy Quest' TV Show

It's just a passing nugget in a new interview with producer Mark Johnson. But since it's been 10 years since we first heard about a potential TV show based on the much-loved 1999 cult classic Galaxy Quest, any update at all is worth seizing upon. Speaking to Deadline, Johnson was asked about the most recent iteration of the project. In 2023, we learned it was still in the works at at Paramount+, the home of Star Trek's recent TV renaissance. He couched his response in a way that also covered a TV show based on the recent Oscar-winning drama The Holdovers: 'Both are being written, so we'll see.' At least he didn't say 'the Galaxy Quest TV show is dead in the water,' which might be what some fans had started to think. The show was first announced a decade ago; a brief Variety article published April 21, 2015, wrote that 'Robert Gordon, who co-wrote the DreamWorks feature with David Howard, is in negotiations to work on the TV adaptation, as are original director Dean Parisot and executive producers Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein.' No further details were given, but the trade speculated it would be a re-telling of the movie's story spread out across a season of episodes. (For the three people who haven't seen Galaxy Quest, it's about the washed-up stars of a cult-beloved sci-fi series; aliens, believing the show to be real, recruit the actors to help win a real-life intergalactic conflict.) A few months later, in August 2015, Entertainment Weekly reported the Galaxy Quest TV show was in development at Amazon. By 2017, comedian Paul Scheer had come aboard the project. He spoke about it to Slashfilm then and explained a bit more about his vision. 'Right now, I just handed in my first script to Amazon, so I'm in that zone. I'm excited about it … The thing I keep on saying about it, without giving too much away—because it's going to be so long before people get to see it, I don't want people to get too burnt out on me telling you what it's about before it gets to that point— but for me, it was really important to do service to a Galaxy Quest story that gives you everything that you want and indoctrinates people who have never seen Galaxy Quest into what the fun of that world is … and also to continue the story of our original characters and have consequences from the first film.' He also noted that the show would be 'mixing two casts. It's separate kind of adventures that kind of merge, and I'm looking at this first season not as episodic, but as a serialized story. So, the only way I've been looking at it is, using everything from the first movie and making the reasons for everything not just—I want to avoid anything that could be viewed as a reboot for reboot's sake. There are real reasons behind these choices—maybe too much so.' Talking to the Wrap in 2018, Scheer said it would be a good-natured spoof not just of Star Trek, but also Star Wars and nerdy fandom at large. 'My pitch for Galaxy Quest was, 'How can we kind of blow this out and pay off things for the fans that love Galaxy Quest, but more importantly—and the thing that I really wanted to do is—appeal to the 'me' of now. Who's the 18-year-old version of me that loved Galaxy Quest now? What would they want to see? Because I think that that is a movie that we haven't really made yet: the Tropic Thunder in the world of modern-day science fiction … When Galaxy Quest came out, it was a niche thing, Star Trek fandom is a niche thing. Now it is selling out Hall H in Comic-Con, so that's kind of the impetus for the continuation.' That all sounded very promising, but after 2018, Galaxy Quest more or less went radio silent. Then in 2023—after covid, but just before the summer of industry strikes—fans got a fresh update. Variety wrote that the show had shifted to Paramount+, with only Johnson still attached. That article also noted that the original push to adapt the movie had faded after the death of Alan Rickman, but he passed in early 2016—long before Scheer, who is seemingly no longer involved, was talking about his pitch for the show. Variety's 2023 story said Paramount+ and Paramount Television Studios were 'in the nascent stages of adapting the cult classic comedy film into a television show.' It also noted 'there have [since 2015] been various writers attached to the project, though none of their versions have ultimately gone forward.' Today's Deadline interview with Johnson notes that Paramount Television Studios is no more, but by Grabthar's Hammer, the Galaxy Quest TV show is seemingly still holding on. If there are any future developments besides the fact that it's 'being written,' we will certainly keep you posted. Do you think there's hope for this one—and will it be worth the wait if it ever happens?

It was based on the novels by the talented Ann Cleeves, however the author has revealed a devastating blow to fans. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Acclaimed writer Ann Cleeves (pictured) shared at Bath Literature Festival that there would only be one more addition to the detective novels She said: 'There will only be one more Vera novel,' subsequently hinting with a playful comment: 'But I probably won't kill her off!' The writer cheekily added: 'Well, that was a bombshell, wasn't it?' According to the publication, fans were devastated by the news and expressed their dismay on social media. One reportedly penned: "She can't do that.' Another asked: 'Does this mean there will be no more Vera books?' It comes after Vera fans broke down in tears and made a desperate plea to ITV bosses as the final season kicked off in January. The detective series is famed for its compelling storylines, mysteries and captivating performances. However, Oscar-nominated actress Brenda Blethyn, 78, who stars as DCI Vera Stanhope in the show, has hung up her infamous trench coat and hat and bid farewell to Northumberland and the North East with one last season. Fans who tuned into the first episode on New Year's Day were left sobbing just seconds into the show. They took to social media to demand that similar detective shows are made to fill the Vera-shaped hole forming in their hearts. 'I'm going to miss watching #Vera on @itv. Straightforward detective drama with no OTT stories or officers with hang-ups or dark secrets. Need more like this!' 'Can't believe it's the last Vera. Have enjoyed every episode.' '1 of 2 final episodes of #Vera. Honestly I've been watching this for such a long time, one of the only shows mum and myself will sit and watch together and try to figure out who done it. Sad to see it ending. Brenda Blethyn is an icon.' 'Great episode tonight, kept me guessing right to the end. Gutted the series is ending. #Vera'

Watch the moment viewers left in hysterics as woman appears to have epic hair fail during Good Morning Britain interview

GOOD Morning Britain viewers have been left in hysterics after a woman appeared to have an epic fail during an interview on the TV show. The news programme was running a piece about parking fines from private companies when they interviewed people in a Derby car park. 5 5 5 While some of them admitted they were struggling to get on the app to pay for their parking, a woman then popped up who said that even when she's on the app, she doesn't know if the fee has been processed. However, viewers were less interested in what the lady was saying, and more enthralled by her hair. As she appeared to have completely forgotten that she had a pink claw clip secured to the front of her hair. It looked as though she had clipped back the hair that usually falls over her face while finishing off her make-up. But then she made an unfortunate blunder by getting on with her day without taking the clip out. And after the programme aired, hundreds of people took to TikTok to share a clip of the woman's interview. Casey was one of them, as she wrote over the top of her video: "Do you think she's completely forgotten she's left this in?" She added that she'd been left "crying" with laughter after watching the show. While Dan giggled: "She looks a right state! "What the heck is going on? She's got a bl**dy clip on her head!" I paid £80 for a haircut but was left bawling when I saw the results - it was like he'd never cut locks before And the comments sections of both videos were quickly filled with others laughing about the woman's hair fail. "Omg I saw that and thought she will be mortified when she sees herself later!" one wrote. "I said this to my husband, I was howling!!" another giggled. "The interviewers well targeted her when they spotted her!" a third said. "Thought I was seeing things this morning when I was watching," someone else admitted. "Why did no-one tell her?" another wondered. As someone else wrote: "Poor cow, why didn't anyone tell her? "That reporter did her dirty!" While others shared their own similar embarrassing situations with hair fails. "I used a clip like this to hold back my fringe when driving… wasn't until after the meal and I got back into the car 2hours later and glanced at the mirror I noticed I had been walking around looking just like that woman," one sighed. "Done my big food shop with my toddler's Peppa Pig clip holding my fringe back, not one single person told me!" another admitted. "I've done this so many times but luckily remember before I get out the car," a third commented.

'Suits LA' star Azita Ghanizada teases new details about Ted Black, Roslyn's relationship revealed in finale

We're heading into the finale of Suits LA (Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on CTV, and the CTV app, streaming the next day on Crave), following the announcement that the Suits spinoff was cancelled ahead of the end of its first season. But with just one episode left, Azita Ghanizada, who plays Ted Black's (Stephen Amell) secretary Roslyn, teased where we leave the characters in the finale. "When the finale comes out, I think it's going to really show how their relationship is grounded," Ghanizada told Yahoo Canada. "And I think it's really powerful how Aaron Korsh and Genevieve Sparling and Jon Cowan, [all the writers], they really came up with a storyline for how these two have a dynamic that was forged at fire, that is based on trust and respect." "And I'm so excited for people to finally understand why she can talk to him the way that she does so candidly, and why he trusts her so much." Watch Suits LA on Crave As we saw in Episode 12, when Roslyn finds out Ted went to warn Samantha (Rachelle Goulding) that Erica (Lex Scott Davis) is looking to take Nicole Kidman as a client, Roslyn is particularly protective of the firm. "Roslyn doesn't care about that other law firm, she wants her law firm ... to fly and soar," Ghanizada said. "And so keeping everybody in the same place is really important." "There's some post traumatic stress going on for her after being cut out of the merger. It's like nobody else can leave. And if you want to leave, get out. We don't want to be surprised by anything else anymore. ... I think there's a real strength and clarity for her that she's not going anywhere, and she expects everybody else to be at the same level." But while we know that the show is ending, Ghanizada did have some things in mind for how Roslyn could have been explored. "In my heart [I feel like] Roslyn has always been very connected to the entertainment industry, where Ted is coming from this prosecutor role in New York," Ghanizada said. "I would love to see more of [her] Hollywood story leaned into a bit." Much like her costar Stephen Amell, the in-person audition element of the casting process for Suits LA really appealed to the Ghanizada. "I went in and it was just so alive," Ghanizada said. "They get to talk to you about the character. You don't really get that on in the form of the self-tape world. It's a little bit colder." "I very much love this world. I love this world of high-paced, sexy, fast lawyers, and especially entertainment law. I mean, I've lived in Los Angeles for 20 years now, so I feel so connected to this kind of storytelling. And I was such a fan of every legal show that's ever existed. ... In my bones, I was like, 'Oh, this is for me.' And the role was written, 30 to 60, all ethnicities. They were not trying to recreate what they had. They were very openminded on who this was going to be. It just has to be the right personality, the right essence, ... a woman that can be the right hand to a powerhouse attorney." But Ghanizada also has an interesting connection to the original show Suits. While that show was being filmed in Toronto, Ghanizada was in the city shooting Alphas, which aired from 2011 to 2012. "After my audition with Aaron Korsh, he looked at my resume and he goes, 'Wait a minute. I think I met you in Toronto.' And I had, but I didn't bring it up, because you just kind of want to go with a blank slate," Ghanizada said. "But when Rick Hoffman came [on in Episode 12], we knew each other in Toronto, and he was like, 'This is so crazy, isn't it?'" "Being in Toronto at that time, we really relied on our actors and casts from other shows. It made the city feel more like our home away from home. ... I would go to ... hot yoga with some of the other cast members from other shows. And it's such a full circle moment."
