Who Is The Croat From ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City'? Everything We Know About His Past With Negan
The Walking Dead: Dead City not only marked the return of Negan Smith (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan), but it also gave way to a chilling new villain with a key connection to Negan's past. In Touch rounded up everything fans need to know about The Croat (Željko Ivanek) ahead of season 2, which is set to premiere on AMC on May 4, 2025. The Croat is the primary antagonist of TWD: Dead City season 1 and the terrifying leader of a group of survivors known as the Burazi in Manhattan, New York. He is known for his sadistic leadership style and his proclivity for torturing his victims. Prior to the beginning of season 1, he kidnaps Maggie's teenage son, Hershel (Logan Kim), in an attempt to obtain information about Negan and potentially reunite with him. Željko is a Slovenian-American actor who has been working professionally in television and film since the early 1980s. Over the years, he's collected a wide array of guest roles in hit shows, such as The X-Files, Murder, She Wrote, Frasier, LOST, ER, 24, The West Wing, True Blood and more. He's had major roles in Heroes, Madam Secretary, Oz and The Walking Dead: Dead City. Fans may also remember him from his work in film, including Argo, Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Last Duel. Very little is known about The Croat's history prior to the outbreak. His nickname – as his real name has not been given in the show – and his use of Croatian implies he is from Croatia. He also shares that he once had a family, a wife named Mia and three children – Nika, Hana and Filip. After the outbreak, he left them hiding in an abandoned post office while he went out to search for food, but when he returned, he discovered his family had all been killed and eaten by another group of survivors. It's revealed in the first episode of season 1 that The Croat is a former member of Negan's disbanded group of survivors known as the Saviors. In a behind-the-scenes look into TWD: Dead City that aired on AMC+, Željko explained that it wasn't until The Croat met Negan that he began 'rebuilding' himself following the loss of his family. He said it was also when his character gained the 'determination to never be vulnerable in that way' again. While with the Saviors, The Croat utterly idolized Negan. He served as an interrogator for the group, but he fell out of Negan's good graces when he directly disobeyed his order and tortured and murdered a young girl he believed to be a scout from another community. 'Let's just say there were a lot of psychos in my crew back then, but he always stood out as being an exceptionally insane son of a bitch,' Negan recalls to Maggie in the episode 'Old Acquaintances.' Disgusted and realizing that he could never be trusted, Negan tried to shoot The Croat back then, but he missed and ended up shooting off his ear as he ran away. Despite their complicated past, The Croat appeared truly excited to see Negan again years later and even seems to look at him as a father figure, despite being older than him. 'The Croat's a complicated character, because, on one hand, he's looking for safe harbor,' Željko shared in AMC+'s behind-the-scenes interview, noting that The Croat wants to 'find a way to no longer be vulnerable in the world.' The change he undergoes after meeting Negan 'becomes a strength,' Željko added. 'But it also becomes what makes him scary.' Warning: Spoilers ahead for season 2! Trailers and sneak peeks reveal The Croat seemingly setting up Negan as a big bad leadership figure again – this time with the Burazi. In one clip, he tells Negan that he brought him a gift and gives him a new version of Lucille, a barbed-wire covered bat and Negan's famed weapon of choice in the flagship series. Longtime viewers recall the original Lucille was cracked and then burned in season 10 of TWD, making her return an especially exciting development for fans.

All American Boss Explains Why Season 7 Went Out on a Cliffhanger — Plus, the Latest on a Potential Renewal
In the event that All American does not return for an eighth season at The CW, fans will forever be left wondering about the outcome of one fateful football game. The teen drama closed out its seventh season Monday night with the high-stakes playoff match-up between the Beverly High Eagles and the South Crenshaw Chargers. In the episode's final moments, Beverly was down 24-20, and it all came down to the last play of the game. Beverly quarterback KJ received the ball and threw a long, long pass to the opposite end of the field… but as Jordan, Cassius and every single spectator watched the ball soar through the air, the credits rolled before we could learn where it landed. But as co-showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll explains to TVLine, it was hard to pass up the opportunity for a 'symbolic' conclusion to Season 7, even if it meant leaving storylines unfinished. 'The football games between Beverly and Crenshaw — they're always so personal. And this season especially, it is so much bigger than the actual game,' she tells us. 'It is symbolic of the unresolved nature of the Jeremy family and the Baker family and their relationship, of the unresolved nature of Khalil and Amina's relationship, of this new generation's struggle. For us, who won that game and who gets to declare themselves the victor of everything that went down over the season felt like such a powerful way to end the episode, and — fingers crossed — allow us to come back in Season 8 to pick up with the results of that game and how it affects them moving forward.' 2025 Renewal and Cancellation Scorecard! View List As for the show's yet-to-be-determined fate — which will likely be decided later this month, as broadcast networks unveil their 2025-26 lineups — Carroll says she hasn't gotten any indication from The CW about All American's renewal chances, but she's 'optimistic' about its potential to return. 'I mean, we haven't gotten a cancellation, so yay us?' the EP continues with a laugh. 'We're moving forward with our storyline ideas in hopes of getting a Season 8. We all know how this industry works, and there's so little we're in control of, but our hopes are that we will have another season and get to continue this story. Quite frankly, we've only just started to scratch the surface of this new generation. We're so energized about the stories we have to tell with KJ and Amina and Khalil, and the Baker and Jeremy legacy, now that they know they're family.' fans, how did you feel about Monday's finale, including that season-ending cliffhanger? Did TWD: Dead City Just Make Maggie the Bad Guy? ‘She's Incredibly Torn,' Says Lauren Cohan
In the Season 2 premiere of The Walking Dead: Dead City (recapped here), we learned that it had been a year since Maggie traded Negan to The Dama for son Hershel. And the trade, we got. A hundred percent. Maggie would have do anything to retrieve her and late husband Glenn's son from the clutches of the post-apocalyptic Leona Helmsley. But to sacrifice Negan to The Dama in theoretical perpetuity? Nope. That doesn't track, not with the Maggie that we know. More from TVLine TWD: Dead City's Season 2 Premiere Returns Negan to Villainy and Brings In a New Version of [Spoiler] What to Watch This Week: 50+ Premieres, Finales and More TWD: Dead City Stars Tease Season 2's Higher Stakes, Surprising Moral and... What?!? 'I Won't Be in Season 3' Given the fact that Negan brutally murdered Glenn in front of his pregnant wife's eyes, we understand that they'll never be exchanging inside jokes and sending one another funny TikToks. Friendship is and should be off the table. But it bears mentioning that in the final season of the mothership Negan proved that he had turned a corner: He saved Hershel from Commonwealth troopers. Negan also accepted that Maggie couldn't forgive him for what he did to Glenn, and in horrific fashion, no less. The spinoff had Maggie and Negan's relationship take two steps back to take one forward. However, he again proved himself to her by going all in on her efforts to rescue Hershel from The Dama and her henchman, The Croat. Negan even allowed himself to be handed over to The Dama. So, great, right? That's change. That's progress. That's evolution — for him. But what about Maggie? She had to assume that Negan would be tortured. Did she just, like, not care that he had put his neck on the line to help her save her son? 'Welp, that happened. Moving on.' We were told in Dead City's Season 2 premiere that Maggie has treasured the last year with Hershel. But not enough to go back in all that time and try to save the dude who saved her kid? WTH? Negan's been subsisting on a diet of cockroaches and the occasional violin solo, and she's just been… cool with that? 'It's a very complicated thing,' Lauren Cohan tells TVLine. 'I think you see when she makes the exchange at the end of Season 1 it's not an easy decision. There's a lot of gratitude and pain in that exchange. Then when we come back in Season 2, she's incredibly torn.' If you ask me, the tables have turned. As awful as Negan was — and we all know that he was — he got better. His friendship with Judith played a big part in that. (He even saved Dog for her!) His love for wife Annie and son Joshua played a bigger part. In his past, Negan was despicable, but in his present… It feels weird to say it, but I like the guy. That being the case, it's uncomfortable at best to know that Maggie just left him behind. Is that who she is now? 'You go out on a limb for me, and I'll give The Dama the saw to cut it off.' It's not a great look for the heroine. Maybe I'm being too hard on her, though. If I'd been in her place when she watched Glenn get struck out, maybe I'd be like, 'Roaches? Nah. That might be too good for that pond scum. What about slugs instead?'
