Driverless taxis hit streets of Abu Dhabi's Al Reem, Al Maryah islands

12 Aug 2025 20:59 SAMIHAH ZAMAN (ABU DHABI)A new fleet of self-driving taxis are now offering free and low-cost rides in Abu Dhabi's Al Reem and Al Maryah islands, the emirate's transport regulator announced on autonomous vehicles are part of a trial initiative by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT Abu Dhabi), G42 company Bayanat and TXAI that aims to increase the use of smart, driverless taxis in Abu Dhabi."Self-driving taxis have hit Abu Dhabi streets. Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands are now part of a trial under the Smart Mobility initiative by DMT, Bayanat & TXAI," DMT Abu Dhabi posted on its social media platforms. The taxis – reported to be electric and fully autonomous – are operational from the morning until late evening. According to the DMT Abu Dhabi, this makes TXAI rides "ideal for peak hours when regular taxis are scarce". 21:10:01 Riders can hail the taxis for stops across the two islands, including malls, offices, residential towers and public of now, the vehicles, which are guided by AI sensors along the roads, include a safety operator who sits behind the wheel."More than just cool tech – this supports Abu Dhabi's vision to cut congestion and emissions, aligned with UAE Vision 2031… The future is here: clean, app-powered, autonomous rides," DMT Abu Dhabi posted, adding that the taxis could soon be rolled out to serve commuters across Yas and Saadiyat islands, and even mainland Abu Abu Dhabi and Bayanat earlier conducted a pilot phase to provide autonomous rides on Yas Island, with a fleet of five TXAI vehicles shuttling commuters between hotels, restaurants, malls, offices and public facilities on the island. The vehicles were available through the Txai ride hailing app. "The TXAI project has so far provided valuable insights for policymakers and insurance companies on AV-related regulations and policies. The service has been classified as Level 4 Autonomous Driving, whereby the vehicle can perform all driving tasks under almost all conditions without any human intervention," Bayanat had said regarding the project.

You can now get driverless taxis straight to Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport

Abu Dhabi just hit fast-forward on the future. You can now summon a self-driving taxi straight from Zayed International Airport, thanks to a major expansion of the city's autonomous vehicle service, TXAI. Yep, no drivers, no awkward small talk – just you, the open road and an AI at the wheel. This futuristic leap comes courtesy of the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) and Abu Dhabi Mobility and it's part of Abu Dhabi's bold goal: to make 25 percent of all trips driverless by 2040. Casual. If you've ever cruised around Yas or Saadiyat Island in one of these snazzy robo-cars, you'll know they're not just sci-fi novelties. Since launching back in 2021, TXAI has racked up 30,000+ trips, covered 430,000 kilometres and – wait for it – reported zero traffic incidents. Pretty slick, right? And now, they're rolling out the red (robotic) carpet at the airport too. Whether you're flying in, heading out, or just fancy a high-tech ride home, the future of transport is officially here – and it's waiting at Arrivals. How do these robotaxis actually work? They're powered by state-of-the-art AI, which you can tap into via a dedicated app. Just open it up, book your ride and watch your driverless car glide over in real time. There's a safety operator in the front seat for now (so you won't be totally alone with the tech), but full autonomy is in the pipeline. Aside from the whole riding in a robot car thing, it's also a win for the planet and public safety. Autonomous transport is expected to slash carbon emissions by 15 percent and cut road accidents by 18 percent by 2040. That's according to Abu Dhabi Mobility's crystal ball – and we like what we're seeing. What's next? Expect even more TXAI coverage, more AI wizardry and a full-on push to get the public on board – literally. Awareness campaigns are already underway and there's a robust regulatory framework in place, covering everything from autonomous fleet licences to secure communication networks and specialised insurance. So the next time you land in Abu Dhabi, skip the queue. The robotaxi is ready and waiting.
