1 dead, 6 injured in West El Paso crash involving semitrailer. Transmountain Drive closed

One person died, and six others were hospitalized after a crash involving a semitrailer and several vehicles in West El Paso, officials said. The fiery crash happened early Thursday, May 8, along Transmountain Drive and Interstate 10. Parts of Transmountain in West El Paso are closed, including all lanes on Desert North and South boulevards, as well as all lanes at Spur 16 at Talbot Avenue, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. Transmountain overpasses are also closed in both directions. Other closures due to the crash include Loop 375, heading west at exit 11A and the frontage road at Northwestern. Drivers are being detoured to I-10 West. TXDOT traffic cameras showed flames from the crash site, while video posted on Fit Fam El Paso captured wreckage and debris. The El Paso Fire Department is also calling the incident a 'mass casualty incident,' not necessarily because of a death, but indicating a large response is needed, reported KVIA-TV. The El Paso Police Department did not specify a clearing time. Passenger train between OKC, Fort Worth could soon see its last ride

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — The only passenger train in Oklahoma could soon see its last ride. The Heartland Flyer has been running daily between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth since 1999 and last year alone, saw over 80,000 passengers. 'My family has always used the Heartland Flyer as kind of like a weekend getaway to go down to Fort Worth for an afternoon,' said Braden Hamilton, rides train. Hamilton says he's been riding the train since he was a little boy and is devastated to see it may go away. 'I'm afraid that we won't see rail travel in Oklahoma again for you know, at least my lifetime,' said Hamilton. The Heartland Flyer is a jointly funded partnership between ODOT and TXDOT, using each state's tax dollars. However, this year the Texas legislature left their share out of the budget. 'In Oklahoma, you're very lucky because the appropriation is baked into your transportation budget, so you don't have to worry about that. In Texas, we have to go before the legislature every two years and basically beg for a very small amount of funding for the Heartland Flyer,' said Peter LeCody, president of Texas Rail Advocates. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation says it's closely monitoring the Texas legislative actions regarding their share of funding for the Heartland Flyer and are hopeful the funding will continue to be available. The Texas Department of Transportation says they can't comment on pending legislation. Oklahoma State University A&M board of Regents names Dr. Jim Hess as 20th President We also reached out to Amtrak, which operates the route and they said funding decisions for state-sponsored services are determined locally. LeCody says time is running out for action to be taken. 'It's kind of variable right now, but it's either next week or the week after, so, I mean, we're down to just days to being able to fund the Heartland Flyer from the Texas side,' said LeCody. He says losing the train would hurt both Texas and Oklahoma. 'If it should go away because of budget constraints in Texas, we're going to be putting probably more than 50,000 vehicles back on Interstate 35 and that's not a good deal,' said LeCody. It could also have an economic impact on both states. 'For every dollar that each state puts into the Heartland Flyer, it returns more than five dollars in economic benefits,' said LeCody. Plans to expand the Heartland Flyer would also be no longer. 'The Oklahoma legislature and the Kansas legislature have been working very diligently to extend service on the Heartland Flyer up to Kansas. If Texas, for some reason, can't find four million dollars a year to be able to run the Heartland Flyer with their portion of expenses, then that puts the northern extension in jeopardy,' said LeCody. If funding isn't secured in Texas, the last ride could be as soon as the end of June. Oklahoma who want to see the rides continue are encouraged to reach out to Texas lawmakers and encourage them to continue the funding. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. I-35 expansion: Construction underway on Capital Express North, South projects

The Brief Construction is underway on TxDOT's Capital Express North and South projects During construction, there will be nightly lane closures on I-35 in April There will also be detours around the construction AUSTIN, Texas - Construction is underway on TxDOT's Capital Express North and South projects. The Capital Express North Project will be completed in early 2029, and the Capital Express South Project will be completed in late 2028. Why you should care "Starting Monday, April 7, we are going to reduce the northbound I-35 main lanes between U.S.183 and Rundberg Lane to one lane," says TXDOT Spokesman, Brad Wheelis. According to TxDOT, the closure will last through Thursday, April 10, from 11p.m. until 9 a.m. "During these nightly closures, we are also going to close the northbound U.S. 183 to northbound I-35 flyover. What folks will do is just exit to the frontage road. They'll take the Front Edge Road, hang a right and get on I-35. On the weekend, we're going to do a full main lane closure on northbound I- 35 in this same area," says Wheelis. Lanes will be completely closed from 11 p.m. until 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday of next weekend, April 11-12, and the following weekend, April 18-19. Drivers will be able to use the frontage road. TxDOT spokesman Brad Wheelis says the closures are for utility work on the Capital Express North project. "Both of the projects are going to add managed lanes. So, on the Capital Express North Project, we're going to add one managed lane in each direction. Those are HOV lanes. And on the south project, we're going to add two managed lanes in each direction. There are some other elements of the project, including some bridge work, including some bypass lanes and innovative intersections and such," says Wheelis. From April 11-13, the Stassney Lane Bridge over I-35 will be closed from 11 p.m. until 10 a.m. for the Capital Express North Project. The bridge will also be closed later in the month from April 25-27 from 11 p.m. until 10 a.m. The north and southbound lanes will be reduced to one lane. "The bridge is going to be closed throughout the entire weekend. The main lanes are reduced to one lane down south just at night," says Wheelis. There will also be detours around the construction.
