Haliburton's last-second shot lifts Pacers over Thunder in NBA Finals

INDIANA'S TYRESE HALIBURTON sank the game-winning basket with 0.3 of a second remaining to give the Pacers a stunning 111-110 fightback victory over Oklahoma City in Thursday's opening game of the NBA Finals. Haliburton, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds, gave the Pacers their only lead of the game on a dramatic 21-foot jump shot to deliver a shocker after Indiana had trailed by 15 points with 9:42 remaining. TYRESE HALIBURTON GIVES THE PACERS THE LEAD! GET TO ABC NOW FOR THE FINISH! — NBA (@NBA) June 6, 2025 'I'm confident in my ability and feel like if I can get to my spot I'm really comfortable from there. I really had confidence in my shot,' Haliburton said of the game winner. 'We're just a really resilient group. We did a great job of just walking them down. When it gets to 15, you can panic or you can talk about how do you get it to 10, to five and from there. We just stuck with it. 'We got a big stop there and they had a lot of confidence in me to make that shot.' With a game-closing 14-2 run, the Pacers seized a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series with game two on Sunday at Oklahoma City. 'We've got to learn from it. There are obviously a lot of things we can clean up. Credit them. They went and got that game,' Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. 'They've had so many games like that that have seemed improbable and they just play with a great spirit and keep coming.' Advertisement It was the fifth 15-point-or-greater winning comeback by Indiana in this year's playoffs, the most by any team since 1998. 'They went up 15 and we just said let's just keep chipping away at the rock,' Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. 'We had a lot of experience in these kind of games and our guys have a real good feel for what it's all about, giving ourselves a chance. 'We got fortunate, but made plays.' Pascal Siakam led the Pacers with 19 points while reserve Obi Toppin added 17, Myles Turner had 15 and Haliburton and Andrew Nembhard each added 14. 'It was a total team effort,' said Haliburton. 'We had so many guys chip in.' The finish evoked memories of the first game in the Eastern Conference finals, when a Haliburton buzzer shot forced over-time as the Pacers stunned New York. He has four such deciders in the playoffs. The Pacers seek the first NBA crown in their 58-year history while the Thunder, a champion in 1979 as Seattle, have not won a crown since moving to Oklahoma City in 2008. 'We know we have a lot of work to do,' Indiana's Carlisle said. 'We have to play a lot better… and they are a menace defensively.' Indiana overcame 24 turnovers, allowing the Thunder only 11 points off them, and a 38-point performance by NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. 'It's not rocket science. We have to be better,' Gilgeous-Alexander said. A 12-2 run pulled Indiana within 98-94 with 6:16 remaining in the fourth quarter, with Turner and Toppin each making two three-pointers. The Thunder, with the NBA's best regular-season record, clung to the lead but could not hold on. Aaron Nesmith and Nembhard sank back-to-back three-pointers to lift Indiana within 108-105 with 1:59 remaining and after a layup by Gilgeous-Alexander, Nembhard made two free throws and Siakam scored off a rebound to lift the Pacers within 110-109. Nesmith rebounded a Gilgeous-Alexander miss to set up Haliburton's game-winning shot. 'We just had to figure out how to win in so many different ways all year,' Haliburton said. 'We're a resilient group… we keep believing and we stay together.' The Thunder, who had a season-low 13 assists, took a 29-20 lead after one quarter and surged to a 57-45 half-time lead. 'We just had to hang in,' Carlisle said. 'We were within reach of still being in the game.' A Jalen Williams slam dunk produced the Thunder's biggest lead at 94-79 with 9:42 remaining, setting up the intense finish. 'As much as we can, we have to treat it like every other game,' said Gilgeous-Alexander. 'We haven't been in this situation but it doesn't mean our character has to change.' – © AFP 2025

Pacers beat Knicks to move one win shy of reaching NBA finals

TYRESE HALIBURTON DELIVERED his second career playoff triple double to power Indiana over New York 130-121 on Tuesday, lifting the Pacers one win from the NBA Finals. Haliburton scored 32 points, passed off 15 assists and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds while making no turnovers over 38 minutes becoming the first player in NBA playoff history with 30-15-10 and no turnovers. Indiana, who blew a 20-point lead in a game-three home loss, seized a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals with the home triumph. 'I was just trying to be aggressive, trying to respond,' Haliburton said. 'I felt like I let the team down in game three so it was important to come out here and just make plays. Guys put me in position to make plays and play my game and man, it's a big win for us.' Advertisement Game five is set for Thursday in New York's Madison Square Garden. 'I'm excited about it. It's going to be a lot of fun,' Haliburton said. 'It's a tough environment to play in. We've got to be ready. Just one more game, take what we can from this and be ready for game five.' The East winner will face either Oklahoma City or Minnesota in the NBA Finals starting 5 June. Haliburton's father was in the arena after a month-long ban following an on-court incident with Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo earlier in the playoffs. 'Hell yeah. I'm glad pop is in the building,' Haliburton said. 'It makes it that much more sweet. Had a little bit to do with it.' Haliburton, who also had four steals, made 11-of-23 shots from the floor and 5-of-12 from three-point range. 'We tried giving him different looks,' Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said. 'We'll look at the film. We just have to do better.' Pascal Siakam added 30 points for the Pacers while Bennedict Mathurin scored 20 points off the bench for Indiana. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 31 points while Karl-Anthony Towns had 24 points and 12 rebounds, O.G. Anunoby had 22 points and Mikael Bridges netted 17 points. Are the Pacers the greatest comeback team in NBA history?

The legend started long before the Reggie Miller choke sign was resurrected in Madison Square Garden Wednesday night. In the regular season, Tyrese Haliburton and the Pacers broke out a football play and hit an insane game-winner to beat the Bucks. TYRESE HALIBURTON OH MY GOODNESS!!!! FADING TRIPLE TO TIE IT AND THE FOUL 🔥🔥 Get to TNT for the final seconds of Bucks/Pacers! Haliburton was just getting started. In the first round of the playoffs, Indiana trailed Milwaukee by seven with 40 seconds left in overtime of Game 5, but won it to send the Bucks fishing. TYRESE HALIBURTON GAME WINNER 🚨 HE SENDS THE BUCKS HOME IN GAME 5 In Game 2 of the second round, the Pacers trailed the Cavaliers by seven inside of a minute to go, but then this happened. TYRESE HALIBURTON WINS GAME 2 FOR THE PACERS 😱🤯 WHAT. A. WILD. PLAY. Wednesday night was the wildest comeback of all — Indiana was down 14 with 2:50 left in the game but got red hot behind Aaron Nesmith's 3-point barrage and scored 23 points in the final 3:14 to come back and force overtime on what was the wildest shot of these playoffs. Get into the paint. Retreat to 3. Launch. Back rim. Way up in the air. GOOD. We're still watching Haliburton's jumper to send Game 1 into OT like 😱 It leads us to this inescapable conclusion: The Indian Pacers are the greatest comeback team in NBA history. Sure, other teams have had some shocking comebacks, but this many in all these clutch situations? This many playoff comebacks? If you need more convincing, there is this stat from Tom Haberstroh (his The Finder substack is a must-read): This season, Tyrese Haliburton has shot 12-of-14 on shots to tie or go ahead in the final two minutes. How do the Pacers keep doing this? 'We've had a lot of these games this year, we've probably had a dozen of them throughout the season,' Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. 'A lot of the games early we were struggling were games we had to pull out, they were clutch games when we weren't playing particularly well… 'It's a muscle. The more you exercise it, the stronger it gets. It's not easy.' The Knicks had been clutch this postseason as well behind Jalen Brunson, and they weren't as terrible in the final minutes of Wednesday night as they are being portrayed in some corners: They made a couple of plays, but they also had one bad Brunson turnover, plus too many empty possessions and missed free throws. Indiana grabbed Game 1 and took it more than New York gave it away. That's because the Pacers are the greatest comeback team in NBA history.

Pacers come back from 14 down in final 2:50, force OT on wild shot, then take Game 1 from Knicks

Words fail me in trying to describe the wildest game of these playoffs, but this stat explain the insanity better than anything: NBA teams were 0-970 when down by 14 or more points in the final 2:50 of regulation in the playoffs over the last 27 postseasons. They are now 1-970. This game was over and the celebration was starting early in Madison Square Garden because of the first wildly improbable pivot point of the night: Jalen Brunson picked up his fifth foul with 10:05 left in the fourth quarter and had to go to the bench. Knicks fans were on edge, fearing the game would swing to Indiana without their offensive engine, but instead New York went on an unexpected 14-0 run — with the Pacers fouling two 3-point shooters on consecutive possessions as part of it, as was some great defense by New York. MILES MCBRIDE DENIAL AT THE RIM 🚫🤯#NBAConferenceFinals on TNT! Brunson eventually returned, and his 3-pointer put the Knicks up by 14 with 2:51 left in the game, a shot that felt like the dagger. It wasn't, because that's when the second wildly improbable pivot point of the night came: Aaron Nesmith got red hot and hit four 3-pointers from that point on as he scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to spark a Pacers comeback. AARON NESMITH CANNOT MISS IN THE FOURTH 🔥🔥 PULLS THE PACERS WITHIN 5 WITH 34 SECONDS TO GO!! Game 1 on TNT 🍿 Still, after an OG Anunoby free throw with 7.3 seconds, New York was up two and just needed to get one stop. That's when Tyrese Haliburton reminded everyone just how clutch he is with the wildest pivot point of the night: WHAT A SHOT BY TYRESE HALIBURTON 🤯🤯🤯 Haliburton's toe was on the line, which forced overtime. While the Knicks got off to a fast start in OT, the Pacers roared back again and made just enough plays to go to 6-0 in clutch games this postseason. Indiana got the shocking road win, 138-135 in overtime, and now has a 1-0 lead in the series. Game 2 takes place Friday night back in Madison Square Garden. This series has a lot of history, but it's also nothing like that past. The last time the Knicks and Pacers met in the Eastern Conference Finals back in 2000, the average score was Pacers 92.5, Knicks 86.7. This will not be that kind of series — these teams were within two points of that total after three quarters. Both teams were incredibly comfortable on offense, able to get to their spots without much resistance for a playoff game. Look at it this way: The Pacers started the night 8-of-8 from the floor but didn't take much of a lead because they couldn't get stops. Jalen Brunson seemed unbothered by whoever was guarding him. Indiana doesn't like to trap or send aggressive help, but it's going to need to do some of that this series just to get New York off balance. Haliburton continued to make a mockery of the idea that he is underrated with 31 points and 11 assists on the night. TYRESE HALIBURTON COMES UP CLUTCH, INDY TAKES GAME 1 😤 🔥 31 points 🔥 11 assists 🔥 4 triples 🔥 clutch shot to send the game to overtime Game 2: Friday at 8:00pm/et on TNT 🍿 Brunson was also brilliant, finishing the night with 43 points on 15-of-25 shooting and getting to the line 14 times. Karl-Anthony Towns added 35 points. Mitchell Robinson didn't have a lot of counting stats to note — other than the four offensive rebounds — but he had a massive impact on the game. The Knicks' bench outplayed the Pacers' bench for the night. Nesmith finished the night with 30 for the Pacers. Indiana had a more balanced attack with Pascal Siakam scoring 17 and Andrew Nembhard adding 15. This series may come down to which team can get enough stops on a given night, although there wasn't much of that with the Knicks having a 127.4 offensive rating for the game (for comparison, that's 10 points per 100 possessions better than their regular season number) and the Pacers at 131. Maybe this series will not be about stops, but rather drama and offense. However, it's going to be hard to top the drama of Game 1.
