Barrie police crack down on organized crime, over 60 criminal charges laid in months-long investigation

A four-month investigation into illegal firearms and drug activity in the city of Barrie resulted in the arrests of more than a dozen people and over 60 criminal charges laid. Barrie police say its teams executed 11 search warrants between February and mid-June as part of the investigation to crack down organized criminal activity. In all, officers made 13 arrests and laid 64 charges. Additionally, police seized five firearms, large quantities of cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine, MDMA, and oxycodone, as well as nearly $50,000 in Canadian currency. 'In recent years, officers have seen an increase in incidents involving firearms prompting a coordinated and strategic response,' the Barrie Police Service stated in a news release issued Friday. The operation was carried out by a combined effort from the Drug Enforcement Unit, Community Safety and Well-Being Unit, and Tactical Support Unit. The identities of those accused was not disclosed.

Create Account Gowryshankar Kathirkamanathan was arrested on May 2 on charges of sexual assault and forcible confinement. Durham Regional Police alleged that he picked up the teen in Hamilton and drove her to Ajax where 'she was confined and sexually assaulted over a period of days.' He was charged with five counts of sexual assault, five counts of sexual interference, as well as one count each of forcible confinement, uttering threats and assault, and two counts of overcome resistance to the commission of an offence/administer drug. In a news release on Friday, Durham cops said that 'further investigation revealed that the suspect was having a sexual relationship with another 14-year-old female.' On Thursday, Tactical Support Unit and Offender Management Unit officers executed an arrest warrant at an Ajax residence and took the suspect into custody without incident. Kathirkamanathan's charges now include sexual assault, sexual interference, assault, invitation to sexual touching, make child pornography, and possess child pornography. MAN DOWNLOADED CHILD PORN: COPS A Toronto man is charged with possessing child pornography. On Wednesday, 'as part of an investigation into the possession of child sexual abuse material,' Toronto Police say members of the Child Exploitation Section executed a Criminal Code search warrant in the Park Lawn Rd. and Lake Shore Blvd. W. area. Cops allege that the accused 'downloaded a quantity of child sexual abuse material from the internet.' Steven Wheelhouse, 38, was arrested and charged with possess child pornography and access child pornography. Officers seized a quantity of electronic devices and say the investigation continues. Woman hospitalized following alleged assault, Barrie police investigating

A Barrie police cruiser is pictured in this file image. (CTV News) A woman was taken to hospital Tuesday night following a reported assault in the Barrie area that resulted in a wound. Police were called to Mayfair Drive, near Ardagh Road, just before 9:30 p.m., after receiving reports that a woman had been allegedly assaulted by an unknown man while walking along the sidewalk. Barrie Police responded with members of their Tactical Support Unit, Canine Unit, Forensic Investigations, and front-line patrol officers. The suspect is described as a white man in his early 20s, roughly six feet tall. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie, black pants, dark shoes, and a blue face mask. The Criminal Investigations Unit is leading the ongoing investigation. A spokesperson for Barrie Police told CTV News that officers remain in the area Wednesday morning. Anyone with information or security footage from the area is asked to contact Detective Constable Lawrason at 705-725-7025, extension 2723. This is a developing story.
