BRS MLAs urge government to roll back Metro fare hike
Hyderabad: Eleven BRS MLAs on Saturday demanded that the state govt immediately withdraw the Metro fare hike , terming it a cruel economic burden on the city's poor and middle class commuters. The Hyderabad Metro Rail increased the metro ticket prices from May 17. In an open letter to chief minister A Revanth Reddy, BRS MLAs Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Sabitha Indra Reddy, T Padma Rao Goud, Maganti Gopinath, KP Vivekanand, D Sudheer Reddy, M Krishna Rao, Mutha Gopal, Kaleru Venkatesh, Bandaru Lakshma Reddy and Marri Rajasekhar Reddy said that lakhs of commuters - including students, employees and daily wagers - depend on the Metro for affordable and reliable transport. The fare revision, which reportedly increases tickets by 10 to 20, could result in an additional monthly burden of 500 to 600 per person, they said. "Hyderabad, one of India's fastest growing cities, deserves a robust, subsidised public transport system - not one designed for private profit," the MLAs said in the letter. Citing international examples such as Singapore, Berlin and Tokyo, the BRS MLAs argued that global cities use govt subsidies to ensure their public transport remains accessible. The MLAs also criticised the Congress govt's broader policies, claiming that rising prices of fuel and essential commodities under the current govt were already straining household budgets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thousands Are Saving Money Using This Wall Plug elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Click Here Undo The additional Metro fare hike, they said, would further burden struggling families. Citing the experience of Karnataka, the MLAs said the Congress-led govt there had also implemented a steep 100% hike in metro fares, which reportedly led to a 13% drop in ridership. "Under public pressure, even the Karnataka CM was forced to intervene and reverse the decision," they pointed out. The letter warned of worsening traffic and pollution if metro commuters shift to road transport due to unaffordable fares. "This isn't just a financial issue—it's about sustainable urban mobility ," the legislators argued. The MLAs said the state govt would face severe backlash from the people of Hyderabad if the hike is not rolled back.
