Macaulay Culkin Finally Shared Why He Likes "Home Alone 2" More Than The First One

Let's talk Home Alone 1 vs. Home Alone 2. We barely acknowledge the third, and any of those others do not exist!!! For decades, people have debated which one is better. The first gets points for being the original. There are arguably better violent acts against Harry and Marv, there's the scary (but nice) shovel guy, and that iconic house. The second takes place in New York, which automatically elevates it. We have the gay icon Pigeon Lady, the turtle doves, and a completely implausible post-9/11 plot*. *That would never, ever happen today! And now we know which one Macaulay likes more. Duh, it's the second. Macaulay revealed on an episode of Hot Ones why: "I got paid more," he said. "I think I own 5% of the net. I also own 15% of the merchandising. So, if you buy a Talkboy, I'm like 'Yeah, I'll take 15% of that.'" So, there you go. He got paid more, and you know what, that's reason enough for me*. *But also Pigeon Lady. I love Pigeon Lady.

The franchise remains near and dear to Culkin's heart, not only because of its success but also due to the relationships he made with cast members like his on-screen mom Catherine O'Hara. When he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023, O'Hara showed up to give a heartwarming speech about her co-star. ''Home Alone' was, is and always will be a beloved global sensation … the reason families all over the world can't let a year go by without watching and loving 'Home Alone' together is because of Macaulay Culkin,' O'Hara said. 'I know you worked really hard, I know you did, but you made acting look like the most natural thing in the world to do.' Culkin toured the country last holiday season with 'A Nostalgic Night With Macaulay Culkin,' in which he hosted screenings of 'Home Alone' followed by a Q&A. At a stop in Rosemont, Ill., Culkin went viral for revealing his co-star Joe Pesci actually bit his finger while rehearsing a scene in which Pesci's thief Harry threatens Culkin's Kevin. 'He was trying to scare me,' Culkin remembered. 'He was like, 'I want to be menacing to this kid.'' Rumors have long persisted that Pesci intentionally tried to make Culkin think he was mean as to better facilitate their on-screen dynamic. 'That's what I heard,' Culkin said on 'Hot Ones' about the rumor. 'But you know, I can see why he was kind of like, 'I wanna scare the kid. I wanna be scary.' I just remember kind of just sitting there and he goes, 'How you doing, kid?' And I go, 'I'm actually tired. I haven't been home in like four or five months.' He goes, 'I haven't been home in three years.' I was like, 'I didn't really realize this was a dick measuring contest.' But yeah, I guess you beat the 10-year-old, Joe Pesci.' Macaulay Culkin crowns ‘Home Alone 2' as the better film

Macaulay Culkin has settled the age-old debate over which of his iconic Christmas films reigns supreme and for him, it all comes down to the paycheck. Appearing on the latest episode of Hot Ones, the actor was asked to choose between the 1990 hit Home Alone and its 1992 sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Without hesitation, he chose the sequel, quipping, 'I got paid more. I think I own five percent of the net. And also 15 percent of the merchandising. So, if you buy a Talkboy I'm like, yeah, I'll take 15 percent of that. Thank you very much. By the way, buy a Talkboy this Christmas.' Both Home Alone films remain festive staples and box office legends, but Culkin's affection for the sequel is also rooted in fond memories of working with the cast. Catherine O'Hara, who played his on-screen mother, spoke warmly of him at his 2023 Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, saying his effortless charm was what made the films so beloved worldwide. The actor has embraced his holiday legacy in recent years, touring the country with A Nostalgic Night With Macaulay Culkin, where he hosted screenings followed by Q&As. One viral moment from last season came when he recalled Joe Pesci accidentally biting his finger while rehearsing a scene, allegedly to make himself more menacing to the young star. Culkin laughed about the incident, joking that Pesci once told him he hadn't been home in three years, prompting the actor to quip about the unexpected competition. Despite the playful rivalry and the on-set mishaps, Culkin clearly holds affection for his time as Kevin McCallister, especially when it comes with residuals and merchandising checks decades later.
