Reform UK takes control of Lancashire County Council sweeping to victory over Conservatives
Reform UK has taken control of Lancashire County Council, winning the 53 of the 84 seats to gain a majority. The Conservatives previously controlled the council with 46 seats ahead of Labour on 27, while Reform had just two. But the party swept to victory, reducing the Tories to just eight councillors, will Labour saw their numbers drop to five. One of Reform UK's new Lancashire County councillors for Morecambe Central Gary Kniveton said his party wants to bring common sense back to politics: "It's a massive test for me as an individual, because two months ago, I wasn't even into politics. "I'm not a politician, I've got no experience whatsoever but, like a lot of the candidates here, we're laymen that have stepped up to the mark, because no one seems to be talking on our behalf anymore. And it looks like it's working." Nigel Farage has hailed Reform UK as 'the main opposition party' after his party took control of Lancashire and other councils from the Tories and Labour and gained an MP in Runcorn and Helsby. He said Reform UK had had 'the Labour Party for lunch' and 'wiped out' the Conservatives in parts of England as local election results rolled in. The elections mark 'the end of two-party politics' and the 'beginning of the end of the Conservative Party', he said. He told Sky News: "This is Reform-quake, that's what's going on across the country now, these are the most astonishing set of Local election results in the history of our country." Cllr Gary Kniveton, Morecambe Central, Reform UK speaks to ITV Granada. Lancashire County Council Result Luke Parker won the Preston East ward for Reform UK. He says the party is attracting a lot of support from people who have never voted before: "There's a lot of things nationally and also locally that people are not happy with. "The big two parties, Labour and the Conservatives, in my opinion have had it far too easy for far too long and, we're here to make some changes, be the voice for the people." Cllr Luke Parker, Preston East, Reform UK, speaks to ITV Granada. Lancashire County Council's returning officer Mark Wynn said: 'I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped to make sure the election process ran smoothly in the county. 'A lot of hard work went on behind the scenes to ensure people were aware that the elections were taking place. 'I would particularly like to thank everyone who staffed the polling stations throughout yesterday, as well as today's vote counters who have worked diligently so I could quickly and accurately announce the results. 'Congratulations to all new councillors.' Have you heard our podcast Talking Politics? Every week Tom, Robert and Anushka dig into the biggest issues dominating the political agenda…

Local elections: No majority at Northumberland County Council as Labour win North Tyneside Mayor
Northumberland County Council is under no overall control after no party was able to claim a majority in the local elections. The Conservatives, who have ran the council since 2017, remain the biggest party with 26 councillors but could not get close to the 35 seats needed to reach a majority as Reform UK surged. The party were the big winners on the night claiming 23 seats, making gains from both the Conservatives and Labour, who struggled in their traditional heartlands. The party were reduced to just eight councillors, a significant reduction on the 24 seats they claimed in the last election in 2021. The Conservatives now face the prospect of working with Reform, or forming a coalition with some combination the Independent Group (seven seats), the Liberal Democrats (three seats), The Green Party (two seats) or even Labour to get their policies through. It was a better night for Labour in the election for the North Tyneside Mayor as they held off the Reform challenge, by just 444 votes. Karen Clark, will effectively become the leader of the Council, succeeding former Labour Mayor Dame Norma Redfearn, who had held the post since 2013. The election for all seats at Durham County Council also took place on Thursday with the result expected on Friday afternoon. Have you heard our new podcast Talking Politics? Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomes 'clarity' on Supreme Court gender ruling
Speaking to ITV News, the PM said he was "pleased" with the Supreme Court's ruling. The prime minister has said he "welcomes" the Supreme Court's ruling on the legal definition of a woman, saying he is "really pleased" with the clarity it provides. The PM declined to repeat his previous statement "transwomen are women," instead asserting: "A woman is an adult female - the court has made that absolutely clear." Speaking to ITV News, Sir Keir Starmer said: "I actually welcome the judgment because I think it gives real clarity. It allows those that have got to draw up guidance to be really clear about what that guidance should say," said the PM. 'So I think it's important that we see the judgment for what it is. It's a welcome step forward. 'It's real clarity in an area where we did need clarity, I'm pleased it's come about. 'We need to move and make sure that we now ensure that all guidance is in the right place according to that judgment.' Last week, following a lengthy legal process, the Supreme Court ruled the definition of a woman in law refers to the biological sex someone was born at birth. This means transgender women with a gender recognition certificate (GRC) can be excluded from single-sex spaces if 'proportionate'. Delivering the judgment, supreme court justices cautioned that their ruling should not be seen as a victory for either side. Nevertheless, the verdict was hailed as such by For Women Scotland, the group who brought the legal challenge, as well as their supporters. Equalities minister Bridget Phillipson echoed the prime minister's comments, stating the ruling means transgender women should now use male bathrooms. Ms Phillipson is expected to update MPs on the Supreme Court's ruling on Tuesday. Downplaying concerns raised by Labour MPs over the implications of this judgment, the equalities minister said: "I speak for the government on this issue as the minister for women and equalities. "We have been clear as a government that we welcome the ruling from the Supreme Court. "We welcome the clarity it brings and the importance of single-sex spaces."
