Top Irish cast to join Love/Hate creator Stuart Carolan for darkly-comic crime drama, Tall Tales & Murder
A CAST of top Irish talent has been lined up for a new darkly-comic crime drama, which is being adapted for the small screen by Love/Hate creator Stuart Carolan. Tall Tales & Murder is based on Irish writer Caimh McDonnell's Dublin Trilogy, whch, despite its name, is a series of eight books that follows the exploits of former garda Bunny McGarry. British comedian Chris Addison has co-created the show with Carolan, while the series will star Love/Hate alumnus Aidan Gillen. Also among the cast are Irish stars Ella Lily Hyland (Towards Zero), Philippa Dunne (Derry Girls) and Packy Lee (Peaky Blinders). Two six-part series have been commissioned by RTÉ and BBC Northern Ireland, in association with Screen Ireland, while the show is produced by Avalon. 'Dark and delicious' Carolan expressed his delight at working with Addison on the series, which began filming in Ireland this week and is set to premiere in 2026. "I've been a fan of the brilliant Chris Addison since The Thick of It — it's been incredible fun working with him to bring this insane story to life," he said. Addison will serve as director and producer on the series. As well as starring in The Thick of It, the comedian and writer will also be familiar to fans of TV panel show, Mock the Week, where he was a regular guest. "I'm frankly giddy with delight to get to team up with the twisted and highly-original mind of Stuart Carolan to create this show," he said. "We've taken Caimh's wonderful novel as a jumping off point and ended up with what I like to think of as a dark and delicious screwball drama." Shining a light on modern Ireland Eddie Doyle, Head of Content Commissioning at BBC Northern Ireland, described Carolan and Addison as 'masters of their craft'. "Tall Tales & Murder is storytelling at its darkest, funniest and most surreal," he said. "We're looking forward to bringing audiences with us on this wild and thrilling ride from Stuart Carolan and Chris Addison, masters of their craft. "There's a fantastic cast already on board and we can't wait to work with Avalon, in association with Metropolitan Pictures, and RTÉ to take it from script to screen." Meanwhile, Rob Aslett, Executive Producer for Avalon, added: "Stuart's brilliant scripts have created a wildly-original crime drama that shines a light on a modern Ireland and we can't wait to bring this show to life with a fantastic cast led by Ella, Aidan, Philippa and Packy."

BBC Content Chief Latest: Race To Replace Charlotte Moore Nears Final Two, As Zai Bennett Drops Out & New Candidates Emerge
EXCLUSIVE: In around a week's time, the contest to replace BBC content boss Charlotte Moore will become a two-person run-off. Before then, we are told there are around five to six candidates in the mix. Two of those are believed to be frontrunner Kate Phillips and BBC iPlayer and channels boss Dan McGolpin. Another pair are understood to be Nat Geo's Tom McDonald and a new name, David Brindley, the Chief Creative Officer of Destination X producer Twofour. There is thought to be at least one other dark horse candidate, possibly two. The BBC declined to comment. Previously deemed a frontrunner, Bennett has always been positioned as a strong candidate but has just got his feet under the table at BBC Studios, initiating a major restructure in the past few weeks and bringing in several new lieutenants. He is the latest big name to exit the race, following the likes of Banijay UK boss Patrick Holland, Netflix's Anne Mensah and Apple TV+ executive Jay Hunt. In around a week to 10 days' time, Deadline understands the remaining candidates will be whittled down to two, at which point they will be grilled in front of an interview panel of senior BBC executives, likely including Director General Tim Davie. Unscripted supremo Phillips remains the one to beat, with BBC insiders and highly-regarded producers pulling for her to get the job. A Netflix-shaped spanner was thrown in the works earlier this week with a report in UK TV trade Broadcast that said she is being wooed by the streamer. Deadline revealed the exit of Netflix unscripted head Ben Kelly several weeks back. Netflix UK is on quite the tear and the Broadcast article dropped on the day the SVoD poached Channel 4's film and TV drama boss Ollie Madden. McGolpin is no less senior than Phillips but Phillips has the programme-making chops and has been acting up in Moore's place over the past few months. McDonald and Brindley are old friends from BBC commissioning, where they successfully ran the specialist factual and factual entertainment departments respectively for several years. The highly-rated McDonald has been touted as a possible Moore replacement since the contest began. He has handy experience working in the States as Disney-owned Nat Geo's EVP Global Factual & Unscripted and has worked with huge stars including David Attenborough and Idris Elba. He is known, however, to have built a life in America and is happy in his current role. Twofour's Brindley is thought to be one of the other contenders. He has been overseeing a successful period for the ITV Studios-owned indie that has included landing the £20M ($27M) contract to make Destination X for the BBC and NBC, new BBC reality franchise I Kissed a Boy/Girl and a historic third series for Apple TV+ doc The Reluctant Traveler. As with McDonald, Brindley is thought to be happy in his current employ. Notably, Phillips, McDonald and Brindley skew heavily unscripted, leaving the feeling that there could still be a big name from the drama world to emerge. Led by search firms Grace Blue and Ibison, the process is moving quickly, with the BBC appearing keen to have a name in place after Moore left the building last week. Moore will become CEO of The Crown producer Left Bank Pictures and creative director of international production at Sony Pictures Television. Stay tuned for more. RTÉ announce new 'comedic crime drama' from Love/Hate creator
Tall Tales & Murder is set to premiere next year RTÉ have announced a brand new 'comedic crime drama' from the creator of Love/Hate Stuart Carolan. Tall Tales & Murder is a 12-episode series made in collaboration with BBC Northern Ireland and Screen Ireland. The show will have two six-part series. Filming for the new show began in Dublin this week, ahead of its premiere in 2026. News in 90 Seconds - 5th June 2025 Ella Lily Hyland, Aidan Gillen, Phillipa Dinne and Packy Lee are all set to start in the show, based on the Dublin Trilogy book series written by Caimh McDonnell. 'I've been a fan of the brilliant Chris Addison since The Thick of It - it's been incredible fun working with him to bring this insane story to life,' Stuart Carolan, Writer and Executive Producer, said of his co-creator. Addison, who will direct and executive produce the show, said he was 'giddy with delight' to team up with Carolan. 'We've taken Caimh's wonderful novel as a jumping off point and ended up with what I like to think of as a dark and delicious screwball drama.' BBC Condemns Israel After IDF Soldiers Strip-Searched & Detained Journalists At Gunpoint
The BBC has revealed that three of its journalists were detained at gunpoint by the Israel Defense Forces while they were reporting in southern Syria. The BBC said the incident, which took place on May 9, was 'wholly unacceptable' and it has made a complaint to Israeli authorities. The UK national broadcaster said it is yet to receive a response. Deadline has contacted the Israeli military for comment. Two other Iraqi BBC staff were part of the group, as well as three Syrian freelancers. They were in Syria to report on the demilitarised buffer zone seized by Israel following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. Kilani described how they were apprehended by Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint near Quneitra city and detained for seven hours. In a piece on the BBC News website, he recalled how he was strip-searched and grilled about his children and their ages. He recalled a gun being pointed at his head. 'I was in shock. I asked why they were doing this when they knew we were a BBC crew,' he said. '[The lead officer] said he wanted to help get us out quickly and that we had to comply with their instructions.' Kilani said his colleagues were tied up and blindfolded, describing it as a 'horrific scene.' They were also taken to a room to be strip-searched and questioned. Kilani added that their phones and laptops were examined, and photos were deleted. He claimed they were told there would be 'worse consequences' if they approached the area again. In a statement, the BBC said: 'The BBC strongly objects to the treatment of our staff and freelancers in this way. Despite making clear to the soldiers on multiple occasions they were working for the BBC, the behaviour they were subjected to is wholly unacceptable.' Love/Hate duo reunite for 'darkly comedic' crime drama
Love/Hate creator Stuart Carolan is teaming up once again with Aidan Gillen for Tall Tales & Murder, a new six-part series commissioned by RTÉ and BBC Northern Ireland, in association with Screen Ireland. Described as a darkly comedic crime drama, the show also stars Ella Lily Hyland (Black Doves), Philippa Dunne (Derry Girls), and Packy Lee (Peaky Blinders). Filming has just begun in Dublin, with the series set to premiere in 2026. Carolan co-created the series with Emmy, BAFTA and Directors Guild of America winner Chris Addison (Veep, Breeders), who also directs alongside Neasa Hardiman. Based on Caimh McDonnell's bestselling Dublin Trilogy books, the show will be produced by Avalon (Catastrophe, Starstruck) in association with Metropolitan Pictures (Kin), and distributed internationally by Avalon. Speaking about the project, Carolan said: "I've been a fan of the brilliant Chris Addison since The Thick of It - it's been incredible fun working with him to bring this insane story to life." Addison added: "I'm frankly giddy with delight to team up with the twisted and highly original mind of Stuart Carolan. RTÉ's Head of Drama, David Crean, called the series part of "an unprecedented slate of original Irish drama" being produced by the broadcaster this year, while BBC Northern Ireland's Eddie Doyle praised it as "storytelling at its darkest, funniest and most surreal." The 12-episode series (2 x 6 parts) is executive produced by Addison, Carolan, and Avalon's Richard Allen-Turner, Rob Aslett and Jon Thoday, with David McLoughlin and Catherine Tiernan for Metropolitan Pictures. Caroline Norris is series producer, and Gemma O'Shaughnessy produces.
