Three large sponge parks planned in Padi, Thoraipakkam and Vyasarpadi
Three major open spaces in Chennai — Elango Nagar in Padi, Secretariat Colony in Thoraipakkam and an open space reservation site near Vyasarpadi Jeeva Railway Station — are to be developed into sponge parks by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). 'Site areas may be modified after final departmental clearances. Private consultants are to be roped in to come up with a design for these parks,' according to a CMDA official. This will be part of a larger Blue-Green Infrastructure plan announced in the Tamil Nadu Budget 2025–26. The detailed designs are to transform these parcels into open public spaces with innovative features that combine stormwater management, ecological restoration and recreational amenities. This will restore the urban landscape's water absorption capacity while making the areas accessible, inclusive and aesthetic. The project will progress in four stages — inception, concept planning, detailed project reporting and implementation support. 'Plans will incorporate elements such as water retention and filtration systems, constructed wetlands (man-made marshland), bioswales or a 'plant ditch', reed beds, and landscaped zones for leisure and community interaction. The proposed amenities for public usage include entrance plazas, tree courts, play areas, gardens, observation decks, open-air theatre, and a habitat centre for birds and aquatic species,' an official said. 'The private consultants to be roped in for the design process will assess micro-climatic conditions, land use, surrounding precincts and ecological history, alongside hydrological modelling, soil testing, and community engagement,' he added. As part of the concept planning stage, a traffic survey will be conducted at mid-blocks and junctions around each site to record current traffic flow and project future volumes. 'The development will proceed through phases covering inception, concept planning, detailed project reporting and implementation supervision,' the official mentioned.

Stalin says Tamil Nadus economic growth has increased to 11.19 per cent
Chennai, Aug 6 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday said that under the Dravidian model regime, the state's economic growth has increased to 11.19 per cent, touching a new high. In his address after giving away job appointment orders in the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, Stalin said the talk of the town is the state's economic growth rising pretty impressively. He said: 'The talk of the town, the talk of the nation is this; under our Dravidian model regime, Tamil Nadu's economic growth has increased to 11.19 per cent and that is the joyous news. Tamil Nadu's economic growth has touched a new high." Further, the chief minister said that the state was witnessing such an impressive growth after 14 years, once again during the DMK regime. The CM said: 'We are not saying this. As per the union ministry of statistics and programme implementation's revised estimates, during 2024-25 Tamil Nadu has achieved 11.19 per cent growth." Such a growth was approximately 2.2 per cent higher than what was estimated in the Tamil Nadu Budget presented early this year. The state's economic growth, which was previously estimated to be around 9.69 per cent (2024-25) has now increased to 11.19 per cent. After 14 years, Tamil Nadu records double-digit growth in real terms
After a gap of 14 years, Tamil Nadu has recorded a double-digit economic growth rate in real terms during 2024-25 with 11.19%, according to the revised estimates of the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation for various States. In 2010-11, the State registered 13.12%. Coincidentally, on both occasions, the DMK was in power. The latest revised estimates were prepared as on August 1, 2025. Fifteen years ago, the base year was 2004-05, whereas it is 2011-12 now. Former Director of the Madras School of Economics, K.R. Shanmugam, attributes the growth to the strong performance by the tertiary and secondary sectors. About five months ago, when the State-wise advance estimates were made public, Tamil Nadu's real economic growth was 9.69%. The latest figure marks an increase of about 1.5 percentage points. Apart from having finished the topper, Tamil Nadu has accomplished what no other State has done — recording the double-digit growth. It may be noted that the data for six States — Goa, Gujarat, and four northeastern States — have not been made public yet, apart from those for two Union Territories. In fact, the figures exceeded the forecast made in the Tamil Nadu Budget presented early this year. The State government was modest in projecting Tamil Nadu's nominal Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) to grow at 14.5% in 2024-25, with real growth put at 9% and an average inflation of 5%. But the real growth is higher by nearly 2.2%. At constant prices (base year: 2011-12), Tamil Nadu's GSDP is estimated at ₹17,32,189 crore for 2024-25, up from ₹15,57,821 crore in 2023-24. The revised figures also indicated stronger performance for 2023-24, with the real GSDP growth revised upward from 8.23% to 9.26%. However, the growth estimated for 2022-23 had been reduced from 8.13% to 6.17%. Going by the data on per capita Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) at current prices, Tamil Nadu ranked third among major States in 2024-25, with an estimated per capita income of ₹3,61,619, following Telangana (₹3,87,623) and Karnataka (₹3,80,906). Commenting on Tamil Nadu's economic trajectory, Dr. Shanmugam, who is serving the Finance Department as Economic Consultant, hopes that if the State continues to maintain its growth, aided by strong export performance, it is on track to achieve its target of a trillion-dollar economy by 2031-32. The higher growth rate is likely to lead to significant improvement in fiscal indicators, such as lower fiscal and revenue deficit and debt-to-GSDP ratio. If all the major sectors grow by half-a-percent more than what they did in 2024-25, the State economic growth may be around 12% during the current year (2025-26), he points out. According to the Union Ministry's data, the growth rate figures of select States for 2024-25 were Uttar Pradesh-8.99%; Andhra Pradesh-8.21%; Telangana-8.08%; Karnataka-7.37%; and Maharashtra-7.27%.

CMDA plans two sponge parks in Chennai
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is planning to develop sponge parks at Chennai Corporation Park in Thoraipakkam and Elango Nagar playground in Padi at a total cost of ₹9.45 crore to manage rainwater, recharge groundwater, and reduce flooding. This plan follows the Tamil Nadu Budget for 2025–26, in which Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu announced that seven climate-resilient sponge parks would be established across the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) at an estimated cost of ₹88 crore. The identified sites at Thoraipakkam and Padi fall under the Greater Chennai Corporation. Necessary administrative approvals were obtained to enable CMDA to take up the work, officials said. The existing structure of the parks would be retrofitted under the sponge park model. Each sponge park will include a central pond-like structure about three feet deep, designed to store rainwater collected through an underground pipe network. Once the surrounding groundwater table reaches saturation, excess rainwater will be directed into the stormwater drainage system. The sponge parks are useful in urban areas experiencing groundwater depletion and can contribute to long-term water resilience and climate adaptation in the city, the officials said.

Fishermen demand early renovation of Mandapam North jetty
As the concrete bollards used for tying boats at Mandapam North fishing jetty were damaged, exposing rusted iron rods, fishermen fear that they would be injured while working at late hours with limited light. The jetty, which handles more than 300 trawlers and 100 country boats, was built about 20 years ago. Since the bollards would be subjected to rough handling when trawlers were tied to them, they got damaged gradually, said M. Jahir Husain, president of Traditional Fishermen Association. As the bollards were also regularly exposed to seawater and salty wind, the concrete materials withered away quickly, he said. Now, instead of renovating them by just applying concrete paste, the whole structures should be rebuilt, Mr. Jahir Husain suggested. He said only recently the jetty in Mandapam South was given a facelift with the renovation work. Further, he demanded construction of a breakwater in the Mandapam North area to reduce the force of waves hitting the coast. 'During October, November and December, when the wind velocity is very high, boats anchored in the sea will be loosened and will crash on the shore,' he added. Due to the wind force, more than 10 boats were damaged in the last year itself, he noted. 'Even minor damage to the boat would cost lakhs of rupees for repair,' he stated. Mr. Jahir Husain said representing the association he submitted a petition to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on April 8, demanding allocation of funds for the construction of a breakwater. 'While ₹360 crore was allocated for construction of breakwaters in Kunthukal, Pamban and Thangachimadam, we are yet to get any fund allocation,' he said. A Fisheries Department official said in the Tamil Nadu Budget 2023-24, ₹25 crore was allocated for construction of breakwater, but since the Government Order was not issued and the funds were not released the works were getting delayed. Regarding the reconstruction of the bollards at the jetty, he said they had informed the Fishing Harbour Wing to prepare an estimate for the renovation work.
