PMK president Anbumani urges Stalin to order probe into ‘wage scam' in drainage board
TIRUNELVELI: PMK president Dr Anbumani Ramadoss on Friday urged CM MK Stalin to order an inquiry into the allegation of Rs 90 cr loot committed every year by officials and contractors of Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD ) Board who pay only 40% to 50% wages to workers. The TNIE carried a detailed report about the issue on Friday. In a post on his 'X' handle, Anbumani said it was condemnable that no action has been taken against those responsible for the scam, which has been going on for over 20 years. 'There is no greater crime or sin in the world than embezzling wages meant for contract workers. The Tamil Nadu government must order a fair inquiry into this scam. Those behind it must be identified,' he demanded. The PMK leader said, 'A total of 11,597 workers, including electricians, pumping operators, and maintenance assistants, are employed on a contract basis in the TWAD Board. Their wages are paid to the contractors, who then disburse it to the workers. The accusation is that contractors, who receive a minimum wage of Rs 15,401 or more per worker, pay only Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,800 and embezzle the remaining amount.'

TWAD Board officials, contractors accused of looting Rs 90 crore annually in wages across Tamil Nadu
TENKASI/TIRUNELVELI: In a case of systematic corruption that's been going on for years, nearly Rs 90 crore is allegedly being looted every year by officials and contractors of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board through an organised racket of underpayment to contract staff across the state. According to a complaint filed last month by the Tirunelveli-Tenkasi Bharathiya TWAD Board Contract Labourers Union to the MD of the Board, Kiran Gurrala, while the minimum wage fixed for nearly 12,000 labourers working in Combined Water Supply Schemes (CWSSs) across TN is Rs 15,401, they are actually being paid only between Rs 7,500 and Rs 9,800 per month, a shortfall of nearly 40% to 50% of the actual salary. The rest of the amount, Rs 7.42 crore every month from the funds allotted for the workers' salary, is being allegedly pocketed by officials and contractors. We've been fighting for last 20 years for our rightful wage, say contract workers Multiple letters and communications sent to the TWAD Board over the years by stakeholder departments such as labour, Provident Fund, and CM's office have acknowledged the rot in the system but all the corrective actions proposed have been successfully stonewalled by the racketeers, workers alleged. According to the information shared by former TWAD Board MD V Dakshinamoorthy with the labourers in 2022, as many as 11,597 labourers — mostly electricians, pump operators and maintenance assistants — have been working in CWSSs across Tamil Nadu and they are entitled to be paid at least Rs 15,401 every month. In the petition submitted to MD Gurrala, the union said, 'Instead of crediting the full salary to our bank accounts, the illegally-truncated wage is paid in cash to us without any receipt. While a higher salary is shown to have been paid to us in the official records with the connivance of Executive Engineers (EEs) in each district, Rs 7.42 crore is being swindled every month from our wages.' The petitioners also alleged that 'in every three-year contract cycle, about Rs 267 crore of our money is being siphoned off'.

Odour-free sewage pumping station coming up in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore
COIMBATORE: Residents living near Subramaniyampalayam can breathe easy - literally. Fears of foul smell from the upcoming sewage sub-pumping station in their neighbourhood have been firmly allayed by officials from the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board. The facility, they say, will be equipped with advanced Odour Control Devices (OCDs) to prevent any unpleasant emissions. The sub-pumping station, being built in collaboration with the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC), is part of a Rs 922.16-crore underground drainage (UGD) project aimed at improving sewage management in the Vadavalli, Veerakeralam, Kavundampalayam and Thudiyalur areas. Located in Ward 15 of the city's North Zone, the pumping station is a crucial link in the city's wastewater network. It will collect sewage from Thudiyalur, including areas like Cheran Colony and Thirumurugan Nagar, and route it to the master pumping station near the Tomato Market. From there, it will be conveyed to the sewage treatment plant (STP) at Kavundampalayam.

No water in sight for villagers as Vaigai plan halted in Tamil Nadu
MADURAI: Residents of several villages in Thiruparankundram taluk have voiced concerns over the prolonged delay in receiving water supply under the Combined Vaigai Water Scheme, implemented by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board. Despite pipelines being laid more than a year ago along the Madurai-Thoothukudi National Highway, villagers claim there has been no visible progress. Speaking to TNIE, former Valayapatti Panchayat president V Bhakkiyam said, 'There are over 950 families in our panchayat and we rely solely on four borewells. The state government assured us that the TWAD scheme would resolve our water issues. Though the pipelines were laid last year near our village, no further actions have been taken by TWAD officials. It is disheartening. Echoing similar concerns, former Valayankulam Pachyat president P Muthupillai said, 'With more than 3,500 families, our village has always faced water scarcity. The TWAD project gave us hope by promising water from the Vaigai dam. Officials had assured us that supply would begin within a year. However, the pipelines have been lying idle for over a year now.'

From river to home, it's a ‘raw' deal for south Tamil Nadu
TIRUNELVELI/TENKASI: Amid mounting complaints from people that the quality of drinking water being supplied under various Combined Water Supply Schemes (CWSSs) in some southern districts is not good, it has come to light that the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board is drawing water directly from the Thamirabarani river instead of sourcing it through infiltration wells dug along the river bed. Infiltration well is a structure which removes impurities from water. A visit by TNIE to Mukkudal, from where drinking water is supplied to Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Virudhunagar districts, revealed that a portion of water supplied under the Vasudevanallur (Tenkasi) CWSS and Rajapalayam (Virudhunagar) CWSS is being drawn directly from the river. Around six huge submersible motors were immersed in the river near the Mukkudal bridge---- where local residents routinely wash clothes, bathe, clean themselves after open defecation, and dump household waste — to extract river water for supply to over 100 villages. In addition, many infiltration wells located at Mukkudal were found damaged. One such well, situated near the Muthumalai Amman temple, where tourists bathe using soap and shampoo, receives water directly from the river. This contaminated water enters the damaged wells, from which raw water is being drawn under the CWSS network and supplied to residents without treatment. Sources told TNIE that, apart from Vasudevanallur and Rajapalayam, raw river water is being supplied under other CWSSs in Mukkudal. 'The infiltration well for the Kadayanallur scheme was deliberately damaged by a TWAD Board contractor, enabling direct flow of river water into it. The practices similar to Mukkudal are followed in Seevalaperi and a few spots in Thoothukudi,' said an official.
