From river to home, it's a ‘raw' deal for south Tamil Nadu

TIRUNELVELI/TENKASI: Amid mounting complaints from people that the quality of drinking water being supplied under various Combined Water Supply Schemes (CWSSs) in some southern districts is not good, it has come to light that the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board is drawing water directly from the Thamirabarani river instead of sourcing it through infiltration wells dug along the river bed.
Infiltration well is a structure which removes impurities from water. A visit by TNIE to Mukkudal, from where drinking water is supplied to Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Virudhunagar districts, revealed that a portion of water supplied under the Vasudevanallur (Tenkasi) CWSS and Rajapalayam (Virudhunagar) CWSS is being drawn directly from the river.
Around six huge submersible motors were immersed in the river near the Mukkudal bridge---- where local residents routinely wash clothes, bathe, clean themselves after open defecation, and dump household waste — to extract river water for supply to over 100 villages. In addition, many infiltration wells located at Mukkudal were found damaged.
One such well, situated near the Muthumalai Amman temple, where tourists bathe using soap and shampoo, receives water directly from the river. This contaminated water enters the damaged wells, from which raw water is being drawn under the CWSS network and supplied to residents without treatment.
Sources told TNIE that, apart from Vasudevanallur and Rajapalayam, raw river water is being supplied under other CWSSs in Mukkudal. 'The infiltration well for the Kadayanallur scheme was deliberately damaged by a TWAD Board contractor, enabling direct flow of river water into it. The practices similar to Mukkudal are followed in Seevalaperi and a few spots in Thoothukudi,' said an official.

Tiruchy corporation begins anganwadi renovation works at cost of Rs 7 lakh

TIRUCHY: Following TNIE's report on unhygienic and unsafe conditions near Santhiyagaparapalayam Anganwadi centre in April, Tiruchirappalli city municipal corporation has begun repair works at a cost of Rs 7 lakh. To ensure safety and create a child-friendly atmosphere, the corporation is installing a pencil-shaped fence, crayon-shaped poles to cordon off the area, which had become a hub for anti-social activities, including drinking and littering. Also, a concrete slab has been built to close the open drain outside the anganwadi centre. A corporation official said, "The pencil fence is both protective and playful. We did not want to build a concrete wall or place a cage-shaped fence. With this current model, one would think twice before polluting the place. Currently, workers have begun laying the base structure and aligning the coloured fence." The anganwadi, which serves over 15 children, was affected by sewage stench and litter for a long time. Residents had also raised repeated complaints about the place. S Jegadoss, a resident of that area, said, "Now it brings a sigh of relief to see that place being renovated, and it won't be a makeshift bar for those who buy liquor from a nearby shop. At least, they will not enter the premises." Officials said that the beautification and repair works would be completed within a few weeks.

Chhattisgarh Waqf Board caps Nikah Khutba charges at Rs 1100; Muslim scholars question move

RAIPUR: A circular issued by the Chhattisgarh State Waqf Board fixing a maximum fee amount of Rs 1100 for performing Nikah (marriage) sermons has evoked strong reactions, with many Muslim religious scholars and intellectuals questioning the need for such a directive. 'The order will put unnecessary pressure on poor Muslim families to pay,' they asserted. As per the Waqf Board's directive, the Imam or Maulvi (religious leaders/scholar in Islam) officiating Nikah can take a maximum of Rs 1100 as their charges. The Waqf Board chairman, Salim Raj, told TNIE that action will be taken on a complaint against those who take more than Rs 1100 for reading out the Khutba (sermon) of Nikah and performing Dua (supplication)—the usual schedule of Muslim marriage contract. 'The Islamic shariat advocates that the Nikah ceremony must be simple, easy, affordable and full of blessings. Then why should the poor families suffer? When all Imams and Muttavallis (caretaker of mosques) come within the domain of the state Waqf Board, this order has been issued to adopt as standard practice,' said Raj, adding that he issued the directive after a Imam refused to perform Nikah of a poor family who couldn't afford to pay Rs 5100.
