TTD plans major greening drive on Tirumala Hills
Tirupati: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is set to significantly boost the green cover in the sacred Tirumala hills, aiming to expand it from the current 68.14 per cent to 80 per cent over the next three years.
To achieve this, the TTD has allocated Rs 400 lakh for a comprehensive greening initiative that will be implemented from 2025-26 to 2027-28.
The move follows the directive of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who, during his visit to Tirumala on October 5, stressed the importance of ecological stability in the region given its spiritual and pilgrimage prominence. He instructed the Forest Department and TTD to take swift and sustainable action to enhance the area's forest cover.
Accordingly, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Tirupati has prepared a detailed three-year action plan covering 3,035 hectares of forest under TTD's control. The plan includes a range of interventions such as Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR), drone-based seed ball broadcasting, gap planting, removal of invasive plant species, habitat enhancement, and fire safety measures. Efforts to restore soil moisture, through the construction of percolation tanks and other soil and moisture conservation (SMC) works are also part of the proposal, along with essential administrative and minor road-related works.
A breakdown of the financial outlay includes Rs 171.46 lakh for ANR initiatives including nursery development and seed dispersal using drones; Rs 65.68 lakh for fire protection and wildlife conservation efforts such as creating fire lines and employing seasonal fire watchers; and Rs 55.41 lakh for habitat enhancement measures like water pit construction and weed clearance.
Additionally, Rs 24.90 lakh is set aside for SMC projects, Rs 32.54 lakh for administrative and field staff needs and Rs.50 lakh for minimal road restoration required to support these activities.
The TTD Board reviewed and revised the initial Rs 650 lakh proposal submitted by the Forest Department. While endorsing most ecological components, the Board reduced the proposed Rs 300 lakh allocation for road work to Rs 50 lakh, clarifying that such infrastructure should serve greening goals rather than become a standalone objective.
TTD Chairman BR Naidu, who chaired the Board meeting on May 20, 2025, reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to the initiative. He indicated that the Board would seek additional funding through donor contributions and relevant government schemes.
The greening drive is also expected to expand into adjacent reserve forest areas covering 6,000 to 7,000 hectares, with coordination support from the State Forest Department. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests has been asked to oversee the extended effort through the respective conservator and DFO.
With the TTD Board's approval secured, the proposal is now set to be forwarded to the State government for final clearance. Once approved, phased funding will be released to the DFO, Tirupat – Rs 173.64 lakh in 2025-26, followed by around Rs 113 lakh each in 2026-27 and 2027-28 - to implement the greening programme as planned.

Rajnath felicitates NCC team for scaling Mount Everest
New Delhi, June 12 (UNI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday felicitated the National Cadet Corps (NCC) mountaineering expedition team, that scaled Mount Everest on May 18. Honouring the raw courage, grit and patriotism of the team, led by Col Amit Bisht, Rajnath presented a cheque of Rs 10 lakh for achieving the feat in the harshest of conditions without any injury, a Defence Ministry statement said. The cadets, comprising five girls and five boys, shared their experiences of the expedition, detailing the rigorous training, meticulous planning and challenges encountered. The Defence Minister commended the team for passing the test of courage, discipline, resilience and composure with flying colours. Terming the cadets as a source of inspiration to the younger generation, Rajnath stated that, with the expedition, the brave cadets have sent a message that even the world's highest peak is no limit for the youth of the country. He exuded confidence that the cadets would overcome future challenges with the same courage and determination they displayed while scaling Mount Everest. He acknowledged the efforts of NCC towards instilling the feeling of national pride among the cadets while ensuring their holistic growth by making them physically, mentally and emotionally strong and developing their social skills. He also appreciated the family members of the cadets who supported them in this endeavour. DG NCC Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh was among the dignitaries present on the occasion. The feat marked the third successful Everest expedition by the NCC, following similar accomplishments in 2013 and 2016. The expedition team comprised 10 cadets, a contingent of officers, junior commissioned officers, instructors and non-commissioned officers. The team consisted of Subedar Major Balkar Singh, the first Subedar Major of the Indian Army to summit Mount Everest. The young cadet of the team was just 16 years old. The overbridge is not yet open to traffic. Officials are considering correcting the identified issues before its formal inauguration. Similar concerns had earlier been raised about the Ganesh Mandir–Gayatri Mandir flyover, which was inaugurated by chief minister Mohan Yadav. Following media reports and expert inputs, some engineers involved in that project were suspended. 'The turn in the middle of the overbridge at the right angle is an issue. Bhaiya (Sarang) has taken up the issue with engineers involved in the project and correction as required would be made in the design,' said Mukesh Lodhi, PRO to Sarang. UPSC Announces Civil Services and Indian Forest Service Prelims 2025 Results
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced the results for the Civil Services Examination (CSE) preliminary exam 2025 on June 11. Candidates who took the UPSC CSE prelims 2025 can now check their results on the official websites, and Along with the CSE prelims results, the UPSC has also released the preliminary exam results for the Indian Forest Service (IFS). Candidates who qualify can update their details on the Commission's website from June 16 to June 25, 2025. During this period, candidates must pay a fee of Rs 200, except for female, PwBD, SC, and ST category candidates who are exempted. They can also submit information about scribes, request assistive devices, apply for large-font question papers, and correct any name discrepancies through gazette notification. The UPSC will upload the marks, cut-off scores, and answer keys for the CSE prelims 2025 only after the entire examination process, including the final results for both the Civil Services and Indian Forest Service exams, is completed in 2026.
