Cooperative banks insist on credit scores for loan approvals; farmers up in arms: Report

Farmers carried out a demonstration against the new rule of cooperative banks where they insist on members getting credit scores for availing farm loans and cattle maintenance loans, at Srivilliputtur, reported The Hindu. The protest call was given by Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam. Aside from this, its president N.A. Ramachandra Raja, members of Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Societies P. Ammaiyappan and A. Vijayamurugan took part in the protest held in front of the office of Deputy Registrar of Cooperatives. Ramachandra Raja said the Reserve Bank of India in 2024 directed cooperative banks that any crop loan up to ₹ 2 lakh to the members should be given without any collateral. 'The maximum crop loan a member could get is only ₹ 3 lakh. However, when the loan amount surpasses ₹ 2 lakh, the farmers are supposed to give collateral for the entire crop loan,' Ramachandra Raja said. Stating that when the members are giving collateral for higher amounts of loans and no collateral is required for loans up to ₹ 2 lakh, he asked, why do the Cooperative societies ask for credit score. He said that loan applications of several members were rejected on lower CIBIL score. 'This is because the members could have got loans from any nationalised banks for their other domestic needs like education loan or other loans. Why should the cooperative banks be bothered about loans got from other banks?' he asked. Besides, the members were also told to pay ₹ 120 for fetching CIBIL score. Farmers advocate for revised water diversion scheme in TN

COIMBATORE: Farmers demanded the implementation of a modified version of the Pandiyaru-Moyyar link scheme so that water of the west-flowing rivers could be utilised in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts. The scheme envisages the diversion of Pandiyaru River to Moyyar River. In a petition submitted to the Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan by Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam on Friday, they claimed the modified scheme would be a finacially viable option too and would not face delays. "A part of the Western Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore and Tiruppur and a part of Erode, come under the rain shadow region. Also a major portion of the zone does not have any irrigation scheme. A proposal to divert west-flowing rivers in the Nilgiris Hill region into Tamil Nadu under the Pandiyaru-Punnapuzha Scheme has been discussed at different levels for more than 60 years," they said. This project has not seen the light of the day as the project considered originally required the acceptance of Kerala government. Also successive Tamil Nadu state governments were not inclined towards such an irrigation scheme, the farmers explained. Recent reports by experienced irrigation experts suggested that a modified Pandiyaru-Moyyar scheme may not require any consent from the Kerala government and that could be implemented for a project cost as low as Rs 90 crore," they added. They urged the ministry to put pressure on the Tamil Nadu government in this regard to at least implement this to help farmers reduce dependency on ground water.

Lack of assistants mounts pressure on veterinarians in Dharmapuri

DHARMAPURI: Farmers are distressed by the lack of personnel in veterinary dispensaries located across the district to assist veterinarians. Farmers said that due to a lack of personnel, the quality of treatment offered to farmers affected, and urged the state government to appoint veterinary assistants as soon as possible. The district has about 3.6 lakh cattle and over 5 lakh sheep, goats, and other milch animals. To ensure livestock are properly taken care of, the animal husbandry department has opened 80 veterinary dispensaries across the district. While each of these dispensaries has skilled doctors to treat ailing livestock, these doctors lack assistants or aides to help them perform basic duties. Farmers urged the appointment of veterinary assistants. State President of the Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam, SA Chinnasamy, said, "With the administration gearing up for the foot-and-mouth disease vaccination drive next month, we need to address the severe shortage of staff in veterinary dispensaries. Over 3.45 lakh animals with hooves will be vaccinated, and we need people capable of handling them. Currently, apart from doctors, there are no other staff in the dispensaries. Without proper aid, farmers are posing as assistants now, and this impacts treatment. Moreover, it is extremely tedious for doctors to handle all the work." Another farmer, S Venkatesan from Palacode, said, "Be it for insemination or delivering vaccines, we need professionals who can assist the veterinarians. The state government must appoint at least two assistants in each dispensary to ensure their proper functioning. Further, infrastructure and equipment in dispensaries must improve, and people must be appointed in a temporary capacity during the FMD drive to ensure the 100% vaccination target." Officials in the animal husbandry department who commented on the matter said, "We have already notified the requirement of more staff, and the state government is also taking necessary steps."
