Appointed at 74: TNPCB recruits super-seniors for regular posts

CHENNAI: At a time when several lakh qualified youngsters remain unemployed and await govt job openings, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has appointed a Rajendiran, aged 74, as its 'librarian' with a salary of not less than Rs 1 lakh. The TNPCB library has about 11,000 books on topics ranging from policies, pollution, disasters and the environment. He is not alone. TNPCB has appointed three more people, aged 64-65 years, in different capacities. Tamilarasan, 64, who had retired from prohibition and excise department, Sampath, 65, who retired from home department, and Narayanan, 65, who superannuated in finance department, have all been recently hired by TNPCB. These 'officials' are now earning their last drawn salary, of course minus pension. When contacted, TNPCB chairperson M Jayanthi said: 'Youngsters are not willing to come to these departments, nor do they have the expertise to handle this. Finance is a major department. We can only appoint seniors in that. So, a senior retired officer from the finance department was posted here. Similarly, it is a tough task to manage a library, and the 74-year-old is an experienced librarian. They are doing their job well. ' 'We asked the govt for postings, and all these four staff members were recommended by the Secretariat. We do recruit youngsters, but they have not yet attained the necessary experience,' she said. These late-stage appointments have drawn criticism from govt employees and secretariat staff associations, who say TNPSC should recruit fresh candidates and promote and train their mid-level staff with the necessary expertise. G Venkadesan, president of the Tamil Nadu Secretariat Association, condemned govt departments for infinite extensions, and said: 'Seniors who retire get extensions and then continue to occupy the top roles and call the shots, drawing their last drawn salary.' It is the duty of the departments to ensure knowledge-sharing, train youngsters and mid-level staff for the higher positions. The association also wrote to chief minister M K Stalin on March 11, condemning the state special projects implementation department for floating newspaper advertisements to hire retired officials, with tailor-made requirements such as 'a deputy secretary rank officer who had worked in the secretariat'. Such late-stage recruitments violate the 69% reservation rule too. M Anbarasu, former president of JATCO-GEO, said the govt should hire fresh recruits through TNPSC and train the mid-level officers for posts with bigger responsibilities. 'Re-appointing retired officials will deny govt jobs to youths,' he said.

World Athletics Relays 2025: India names fresh 4x400m squad; new mixed 4x400m team to compete too

India has named a rejigged men's 4x400m team for the World Relays to be held in Guangzhou, China from May 10 to 11, with just one runner from the squad that failed to impress in the Paris Olympics making the cut. Except for Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan, the other members of the World Relays team entered by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) are new. The new members are Dharamveer Choudhary, Rince Joseph, Tushar Kanti, Jay Kumar, Mohit Kumar, T. S. Manu and T. K. Vishal. The same eight-member men's 4x400m relay team was on Friday named for the Asian Athletics Championships to be held in Gumi, South Korea from May 27-31. Vishal, Jay Kumar, Manu, Dharamveer and Joseph had finished first to fifth in that order in the men's 400m final at the just concluded Federation Cup in Kochi. Tushar, Mohit and Tamilarasan ran in the semifinals but failed to reach the final. In Paris 2024 Olympics, the Indian 4x400m relay team of Muhammed Anas, Muhammed Ajmal, Amoj Jacob, Rajesh Ramesh, Mijo Chacko Kurian and Tamilarasan failed to get past the heat stage. Tamilarasan, however, was not part of the quartet that actually ran the race. The AFI officials had earlier said that the men's 4x400m relay will be revamped, which they did for the World Relays. India has also fielded a mixed 4x400m relay team, in which Amoj Jacob has found a place. The other members of the team are Dharmveer Choudhary, T K Vishal (both male), and Sneha Kolleri, Jisna Mathew, Rupal and Subha Venkatesan. Women's 4x100m and 4x400m relay, men's 4x100m and 4x400m relay, as well as mixed 4x100m and 4x400m relay, are being competed in the World Relays. The mixed 4x100m relay is being contested on the global stage for the first time in Guangzhou. One team per national federation can compete in each event and a maximum of eight athletes can be entered for each event. The top 14 teams in each of the men's and women's 4x100m and 4x400m, plus the mixed 4x400m relay, will secure their place at the World Athletics Championships to be held in Tokyo in September. The remaining two places in each event will be awarded based on top lists during the qualification period (February 25, 2024 to August 24, 2025). The top eight teams in each event will be awarded prize money, ranging from USD 2000 to USD 40,000.

Good response to cashless transactions in government buses in Salem division

The cashless transaction introduced by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) Salem division has evoked good response within a month from passengers as around ₹1 crore worth of cashless transactions were made. Under the Salem Division of TNSTC, 1,900 buses are operated in Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri districts, and every day 14 lakh passengers are travelling in these buses. Likewise, on weekends and festival days, special buses were also operated by the division. In March, after training was provided to the bus conductors on how to make cashless transactions through the UPI QR code, the system was introduced in the 1,900 buses in the Salem division. Within a month, around ₹1 crore worth of transactions were made in the government buses. R. Tamilarasan, a computer engineer from Arisipalayam, said that earlier conductors struggled to give change for the tickets, especially during morning hours. In the long-distance buses, most of the people gave ₹500 notes for tickets and conductors struggled to give the balance change. But now, due to the cashless transactions by scanning the QR code displayed in the ticket machine, passengers easily pay the amount for the tickets and has reduced the quarrel between the conductors and passengers in buses, Mr. Tamilarasan added. Officials attached to the TNSTC Salem division said that day by day, the number of passengers getting tickets through cashless transactions is increasing, especially in mofussil buses. A sticker was pasted in every bus regarding the cashless transactions. To encourage the conductors, gifts were given to those who made more cashless transactions. Four conductors received gifts for doing more transactions in the first month. The cashless transactions were very poor in town buses, as the ticket fare is less in town buses and women avail free travel, officials added.
