Good response to cashless transactions in government buses in Salem division

The Hindu21-04-2025

The cashless transaction introduced by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) Salem division has evoked good response within a month from passengers as around ₹1 crore worth of cashless transactions were made.
Under the Salem Division of TNSTC, 1,900 buses are operated in Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri districts, and every day 14 lakh passengers are travelling in these buses. Likewise, on weekends and festival days, special buses were also operated by the division.
In March, after training was provided to the bus conductors on how to make cashless transactions through the UPI QR code, the system was introduced in the 1,900 buses in the Salem division. Within a month, around ₹1 crore worth of transactions were made in the government buses.
R. Tamilarasan, a computer engineer from Arisipalayam, said that earlier conductors struggled to give change for the tickets, especially during morning hours. In the long-distance buses, most of the people gave ₹500 notes for tickets and conductors struggled to give the balance change. But now, due to the cashless transactions by scanning the QR code displayed in the ticket machine, passengers easily pay the amount for the tickets and has reduced the quarrel between the conductors and passengers in buses, Mr. Tamilarasan added.
Officials attached to the TNSTC Salem division said that day by day, the number of passengers getting tickets through cashless transactions is increasing, especially in mofussil buses.
A sticker was pasted in every bus regarding the cashless transactions. To encourage the conductors, gifts were given to those who made more cashless transactions. Four conductors received gifts for doing more transactions in the first month. The cashless transactions were very poor in town buses, as the ticket fare is less in town buses and women avail free travel, officials added.

India shares fall as US-China trade deal uncertainty, Middle East tensions weigh

(Updates for morning trade) India's benchmark indexes edged lower on Thursday, led by losses in IT stocks, as ambiguity over the U.S.-China trade deal and rising tensions in the Middle East dampened risk appetite. The Nifty 50 was down 0.16% at 25,101.3 and the BSE Sensex fell 0.2% to 82,355.26, as of 10:13 a.m. IST. The broader small-caps and mid-caps both fell about 0.3%. Eleven of the 13 major sectors logged losses. Other Asian markets were also muted, while Wall Street equities fell overnight on fresh geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a lack of detail in a U.S.-China trade deal. U.S. President Donald Trump said a framework on tariff rates had been reached to revive the fragile trade truce with China. While this lifted investor hopes, the lack of specifics kept markets on edge. "The tariff crisis is not over yet. With Trump's credibility being what it is, it would be too early to discount the development as a positive for markets," said VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments. Meanwhile, geopolitical concerns heightened after Iran said it will strike U.S. bases in the Middle East if nuclear talks fail and conflict arises with Washington. Escalating security risks in the Middle East is a negative for India as it could trigger a rise in Brent crude prices, said two analysts. Heavyweight IT fell 1%. Indian IT companies earn a significant share of their revenue from the United States. Among individual stocks, Paytm fell 8.4% after India's finance ministry reports claiming the introduction of merchant discount rate (MDR) on UPI transactions. Delay or non-introduction of MDR is sentiment negative for Paytm and could present a downside risk to the company's core profitability in fiscal 2026 and 2027, UBS said in a note. Paytm share price cracks 10% after MDR clarification

Paytm share price in focus today: Shares of One 97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm, plunged 10% in early trade on Thursday, June 12, hitting an intraday low of ₹ 864.40 apiece, as investor sentiment turned sour after the Finance Ministry dismissed reports about the possible introduction of a Merchant Discount Rate (MDR). The stock has been in the spotlight in recent months amid reports suggesting that the Indian government may consider restoring merchant charges on UPI transactions. However, the Finance Ministry dismissed the speculation as 'false, baseless, and misleading,' stating that no MDR will be charged on UPI payments. "Speculation and claims that the MDR will be charged on UPI transactions are completely false, baseless, and misleading. Such baseless and sensation-creating speculations cause needless uncertainty, fear and suspicion among our citizens," Finance Ministry said in a post on X. "The Government remains fully committed to promoting digital payments via UPI," it added. This response came after reports in a section of media claimed that the Centre is considering reintroducing MDR on UPI transactions above ₹ 3,000 in a move to support banks and payment service providers. In March, the Payments Council of India (PCI), representing 180 non-banking payment players, urged the government to reconsider the Zero MDR policy for UPI and RuPay debit card transactions, citing financial sustainability concerns. The policy, in place since January 2020, has strained the ecosystem despite a government incentive of ₹ 1,500 crore—far short of the ₹ 10,000 crore annual operational cost. To address this, PCI proposed reintroducing MDR for RuPay debit cards and a 0.3% MDR on UPI for large merchants. Meanwhile, UPI continues to dominate India's digital payments, contributing 80% of retail transactions in FY24, with 131 billion transactions valued over ₹ 200 lakh crore. January 2025 marked a monthly high with 16.99 billion transactions worth ₹ 23.48 lakh crore. Disclaimer: The views and recommendations given in this article are those of individual analysts.
