Toronto FC sends forward Charlie Sharp to USL's Tampa Bay Rowdies on loan

Toronto FC striker Charlie Sharp, right, fights for position against New York City FC's centre back Thiago Martins during second half MLS soccer action in Toronto on Saturday, April 26, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jon Blacker TORONTO — Toronto FC has loaned forward Charlie Sharp to the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the USL Championship for the remainder of the 2025 season. The move should give the 24-year-old Sharp more playing time and a taste of life in a different environment. The six-foot-five striker has seen just 105 minutes of action in six MLS games this season, including one start, while also playing for TFC 2. 'One of the things I said to Charlie, specially as a young forward, is you have to play where you have real pressure to score,' said Toronto coach Robin Fraser. 'When you get these opportunities, you have to put them away. And if you don't, there are real consequences, more so than even playing for the (Toronto) second team where it's more about developmental philosophy.' 'Part of learning to be pro is embracing that pressure, the pressure of winning and losing that I don't think you necessarily get when you're with a second team,' he added. 'So to put him out some place where you have people whose livelihoods depend on it, then I think it's the way to really test yourself in a pressure-filled environment.' Toronto selected Sharp in the third round (61st overall) in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft out of Western Michigan University. He signed three short-term agreements with the first team during the 2024 season, making his debut against Nashville on May 15. The native of Brighton, Mich., signed a first-team contract on Sept. 17, 2024, and has one assist in eight appearances in total. Sharp spent five seasons at Western Michigan, scoring 42 goals and adding 22 assists in 89 appearances. As a senior, he led NCAA Division I ranks with 19 goals and was the first MAC Hermann Trophy finalist in Western Michigan's men's program history. Toronto forward Hugo Mbongue (Vancouver FC) and defender Adam Pearlman (Halifax Wanderers) are both currently out on loan in the Canadian Premier League. Tampa (5-10-2) currently sits bottom of the USL Championship's 12-team Eastern Conference. The Rowdies roster includes former Forge FC forward Woobens Pacius, who is on loan from Nashville SC. Pacius led Forge in scoring with 32 goals in 93 appearances across all competitions in three seasons with the CPL side. Aa native of Terrebonne, Quebec, Pacius spent time in CF Montreal's academy. Robbie Neilson interested in THREE vacant SPFL manager jobs as ex-Hearts boss says ‘it's just about making sure it fits'

The former Hearts, Dundee United and MK Dons boss came home last month after being sacked following an 18-month spell with second-tier outfit Tampa Bay Rowdies. And he's keeping a close eye on the vacancies at Dundee, Motherwell and Partick Thistle. Asked if they were positions of interest, the 44-year-old said: 'Yes, definitely. 'I really missed the intensity of the Scottish game. 'When you've been out of it for a while you want to get back into it. So all these clubs would be very interesting. 'It's just making sure it's a fit. Do they see something in me they want, and vice versa. 'I'll see how it goes in the next couple of weeks. At this time I'm open to anything. 'I've got plenty to offer my next job. I've had promotions, title wins, cup finals and European football. I took the Tampa Bay Rowdies job for a change. 'I'd obviously been in Scotland and England all of my career, so I wanted something different and it was a great opportunity. 'I thought I could go and experience a different culture, a different style of football, a different lifestyle. Legendary Hearts manager Jim Jefferies reveals he was dead for more than four minutes as he opens up on major health scare 'It was a great experience, cut short a bit as I was only there for 18 months. But all in all, it was something that I really valued and it's helped make me a better coach. 'What I really missed was the intensity of the game here. 'Everything there is more about the product you put on the pitch. Results weren't a massive thing. 'Whereas here, it's the No 1 sport. 'That intensity before the game, that's what I started to really miss. 'Getting back to that environment is something I'm looking forward to.' Neilson insisted he had no problems dealing with the sack from Hearts in 2023 which abruptly ended his second spell in charge. A 2006 Scottish Cup winner with the club as a player, he was axed after missing out on third spot to Aberdeen. But the three-time Championship title winner admits it was probably the right decision for both parties. He added: 'To be honest, it's part and parcel of the game. 'When I left MK Dons, that was the first time it had happened to me and it was really difficult. The second time, it's part of the game. 'I spoke to a lot of managers about it, like Alex Smith and Craig Levein, and you have to get used to it. 'If you can go somewhere for two or three years you've done really well. 'It had come to that point where we were both drifting, me as a coach and them as a club. It was probably the right thing to do. 'But you learn every time you come out of a job. 'You want to leave a club in a better place than when you took over and the majority of clubs I've been at I've managed to do that.' Cammy MacPherson: St Johnstone midfielder injured in Tampa

St Johnstone midfielder Cammy MacPherson's injury curse has struck again in America. The 26-year-old joined Tampa Bay Rowdies on loan in February, having not made a single appearance under Simo Valakari. Before the Finn took over from Craig Levein, MacPherson's Perth career had been dogged by injury. He had to undergo surgery to his groin and thigh and twice dislocated his shoulder. After making a promising start to his spell in Florida, MacPherson was taken off at half-time of a cup game a week ago, with a shoulder issue again the problem. Tampa Bay, who sacked former Dundee United manager, Robbie Neilson, recently, were back in league action on Saturday but MacPherson wasn't in the squad which drew 1-1 with Birmingham Legion. His loan deal in Tampa runs out at the end of this month and there is no prospect of Valakari seeking to extend his Saints contract, as Levein did last summer.
