Minister sounds alert over 18 dilapidated crest gates at Tungabhadra Reservoir
Koppal: The minister in charge of Koppal district, Shivaraj Tangadagi, has sounded a word of caution, saying that 18 out of the 33 crest gates at are in critical condition, with six of these impeding the flow of water into the river. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During a media briefing, following Friday's Independence Day celebrations here, Tangadagi said the dam safety committee's evaluation has revealed that 18 crest gates need to be replaced immediately, apart from one other gate that was lost earlier. However, the company that was given the tender for repair and replacement work said the process would take a minimum of eight months. "The dam safety committee conducted a thorough inspection of all the 33 crest gates of the 72-year-old Tungabhadra Dam and assessed their capacity. According to their report, 18 gates are almost completely worn out and need immediate replacement. The 19th crest gate is still awaiting installation," said Tangadagi, adding that the tender for the replacement of all gates has been finalised. "Due to the malfunction of the crest gates, the reservoir is currently storing a maximum of only 80 TMC feet of water," he said. Though he assured that there will be no shortage of water for the first crop, Tangadagi added: "The Tungabhadra Board (TB) has resolved to supply water for one crop. Therefore, farmers are urged to cooperate." "If the inflow exceeds 1.5 lakh cusecs, it will pose a challenge to release water from the reservoir. Hence, measures are being implemented to prevent such a scenario," he further said. The minister said TB ought to include officials from both Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. "Despite numerous appeals from the Karnataka govt, the Union govt has remained unresponsive. Additionally, the TB has postponed installation of the dam gates," he said. On August 14, TB officials who inspected the construction site of the crest gates near Adavi Somapur village in Gadag district told the contractors that "all 33 crest gates of the dam must be replaced by June 2026". Government is committed to internal reservation; asserts Tangadagi
Pic: Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi led the I-Day celebration in Koppal Koppal: Backward classes minister Shivaraj Tangadagi announced that the state govt is committed to internal reservation, with a discussion scheduled in the House on Aug19 concerning its implementation. Following his participation in the Independence Day celebrations on Friday, Tangadagi addressed issues related to the Justice Nagamohan Das Commission report. He stated that the technical issues outlined in the report will be addressed. "However, Govind Karajol and Chalawadi Narayanaswamy are politicising this matter. Why did they not implement the Sadashiva Commission report during their time in office? Hence, the BJP has no authority to discuss internal reservation," he asserted. Regarding the murder case of Gavisiddappa Nayak, a youth from the Valmiki community, that occurred on Aug 3 in the city, Tangadagi explained that the investigation is ongoing, and the truth will emerge. "The minor girl involved in the case has also been questioned. However, the BJP is politicising the situation surrounding the deceased. If the girl's mother lodges a complaint regarding the actions of the deceased youth, the govt will also look into that," he assured. Koppal gears up for bandh following youth's murder
Koppal: A large-scale protest is scheduled in the city on Aug 8, condemning the murder of 26-yr-old Gavisiddappa Nayak, reportedly killed for being in love with a Muslim woman. The demonstration aims to be secular and non-partisan in its approach. All Karnataka Valmiki Nayak Mahasabha district committee held a preliminary meeting at Valmiki Bhavan on Wednesday to plan the protest. They decided to ensure large-scale participation from the community across district while maintaining a firm secular stance. Former minister B Sriramulu has been invited to join the protest, who confirmed his attendance during the meeting. He urged supporters to join the event, emphasising its importance in sending a clear message for justice. He promised support until those responsible for the murder face appropriate legal consequences and advocated measures to prevent future incidents of this nature. Several Hindu organisations have expressed solidarity with the Valmiki community's initiative, strongly denouncing the murder and declaring support for a district-wide bandh on Aug 8 (Friday). Meanwhile, progressive group leaders have appealed for calm and warned against actions that could escalate communal tension. Prof Allaprabhu Bettadur emphasised the need for compensation and land allocation to Gavisiddappa's family, citing their lack of land ownership. While advocating a thorough investigation—including the involvement of the young woman—Bettadur recommended avoiding narratives that might disrupt social harmony. SP Ram L Arasiddi said that police detained four individuals connected to the murder, including the primary suspect, Sadik Kolkar. "The other individuals arrested are Gesudaraj Patel, Nizamuddin, and Mehboob Sikkalgar. The investigation is ongoing," he stated. Tangadagi meeting District minister Shivaraj Tangadagi convened a meeting on Wednesday with Koppal MLA K Raghavendra Hitnal to review the situation. He assured justice for Nayak's family and visited them to express condolences. He described the incident tragic and stressed the govt's commitment to taking swift and serious action. The minister noted that key suspects were arrested and pledged full accountability. While addressing calls for protests, he reiterated the need to prioritise support for the grieving family. Tangadagi also stated that the woman allegedly involved would be questioned if required, and assured that there has been no political interference in the investigation thus far. Responding to local concerns over reports of prime accused Sadiq's alleged ganja consumption, Tangadagi directed police to crack down on such drug-related issues in Gangavathi and Koppal. As part of govt relief efforts, Tangadagi provided an initial compensation of Rs 4,12,500 to Gavisiddppa's parents under the SC/ST social welfare provisions. He confirmed that the total relief package would amount to Rs 8,25,000.

BJP legislators demand minister Shivaraj Tangadagi's resignation
Koppal/Ballari: Doddanagouda Patil, the BJP MLA representing Kushtagi, accused backward classes welfare minister Shivaraj Tangadagi of demanding a commission in exchange for releasing the pending grant to the Taileshwar Ganiga Mahasamsthan Mutt and called for action against him. In a press release, he claimed that during the previous BJP administration, a grant of Rs 3.5 crore was promised for the mutt's development projects, of which Rs 2.5 crore was disbursed. However, the subsequent Congress govt failed to release the remaining funds. Consequently, the swami sought judicial intervention, which resulted in a court order for the release of the funds. Despite this ruling, minister Tangadagi purportedly requested a commission of 20% to 25% for the disbursement of the pending grant. "The demand for a commission on funds meant for the mutt indicates that corruption is pervasive at all levels within the current administration. An inquiry should be initiated into the commission's request related to grant releases in the backward classes welfare department, and minister Tangadagi ought to resign," Doddanagouda asserted. In a statement, legislative council member YM Sathish and former MLA G Somashekara Reddy said that minister Tangadagi, who allegedly solicited a bribe from the mutt, should immediately step down from his ministerial role and that the overdue funds should be released without delay. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lợi ích khi giao dịch CFD Bitcoin IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "Corruption within the state govt seems rampant. The CM is personally implicated in the Muda scam. The Valmiki Corporation scam is currently being investigated by the CBI. This govt has created a troubling environment where even mutts have to receive grants through bribes," they said. In response to these allegations, Shivaraj Tangadagi stated that he is open to having a discussion with Purnananda Swami of the Taileshwar Ganiga Mahasamsthan Mutt. During Basavaraj Bommai's time as the CM, he allocated Rs 3.5 crore for the mutt. Bommai sanctioned the funding on Oct 18, 2022, but later cut it down by Rs 1 crore, ultimately providing Rs 2.5 crore. After our administration took office, a total of Rs 7 crore was allocated to the mutt, which comprises the earlier Rs 5 crore and the current Rs 2 crore. "Nevertheless, swami, who has concealed this information, has begun legal action. We also intend to submit evidence to the court," he stated.

Nothing wrong if RSS is banned: Tangadagi
Koppal: Kannada & culture minister Shivaraj Tangadagi said that RSS was banned thrice in the past, and there is nothing wrong if it is banned again. Speaking to reporters here on Monday, Tangadagi said that Vallabh Bhai Patel banned the RSS. "Persons like BJP MLC Ravikumar, who often insult women, are trained by RSS. As it often involves in communal clashes, it can be banned. Because of it, harmony is disturbed in coastal Karnataka. It is washing the brains of only middle-class, backward community youths. No wards of BJP functionaries like Amit Shah, R Ashoka, Arvind Bellad are full-time workers. Youths of poor and middle-class families are made full-time workers," he added. Expressing respect for Poornandapoori Swamiji of Vishwa Ganiga Trust, Tangadagi insisted that if evidence is provided for the allegations against him, he will shun politics. "Actions were taken for fund release as per the finance department's instructions. We plan to file a defamation case against the Swamiji for the baseless allegations," he added. He noted that the Ganiga community's seer expects the immediate release of funds upon request, which he believes is not appropriate as there are rules and regulations to follow. Regarding the topic of changing the chief minister, he mentioned that the high command has instructed not to speak publicly about it, and he is abiding by that. "We are unaware of why KN Rajanna spoke about the Sept revolution. We are also unaware of what Rayareddi said about the guarantee scheme. We will not comment on senior leaders," he asserted. He added that promoting or demoting Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar is up to the state's people, and it is not possible just because the BJP says so. "An event for beneficiaries is scheduled in Koppal on Aug 4, with CM and DCM expected to attend. Various projects for the Koppal district assembly constituencies will be launched on that day," he informed.
